# Call to Action: Test EVM wallets on Altera!

We invite everyone to test our Native Asset Mapping technology, live on the mainnet! This is the moment when you can tell your Ethereum maximalist friend to log in to Altera because you just sent them some HIVE or HBD directly to their wallet. No complex bridging or paying gas fees. All they have to do is connect their EVM wallet, and they will be able to use those newly acquired assets! The reality is that when any wallet is connected to Altera, it becomes universal. No restrictions on which assets which wallets can hold, and no gas fees. Does anyone know Vitalik's wallet address? 😉

For this guide, you will need 2 different wallet types, or a friend with a wallet that you trust. This step-by-step guide will show you exactly what to do, and if you do happen to get stuck or confused… We have an FAQ section, and we will be active in the comments! # How to send Hive/HBD to an Ethereum Wallet

Before starting, you will need to log in to Altera with your Hive wallet. If you haven’t done this before, it’s very easy. Just select EVM or Hive wallet on the login screen and confirm. If you're a crypto expert and have used a few different DeFi applications, you will find a similar experience. Aside from logging in, there are a few prerequisites to follow the tutorial:

- Ensure you know your friend's wallet address or have a copy of your own EVM wallet address.
- 1 HBD and 1 HIVE liquid
- Enough Hive RCs to send assets (Hive accounts get 5 HBD worth of RCs for free on VSC)

Once you’ve checked off the prerequisites, you are ready to get started.

**Step 1:** Log in to Altera using your Hive wallet.

**Step 2:** Select the Quick Send button on the Home page.

**Step 3:**  Type the recipient address (EVM or Hive) in the To box, then select the recipient in the drop down list.

**Step 4:** Select the Token button, and select the asset you wish to send (HBD preferred - this ensures you have RCs in the EVM wallet).

**Step 5:** Enter the amount you wish to send and select the Network you are sending from, then select Next.

**Step 6**: Select Send and confirm the transaction using your wallet.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully sent HBD to an EVM wallet! Now you have enough HBD liquid on VSC to do some transactions. Remember that Resource Credits are tied to the amount of HBD in your wallet and will be locked up for a period as you use VSC. Now repeat the steps, but replace HBD with HIVE  so you can test both. Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to use VSC! Now, let’s go through this using an EVM wallet. You’ll find that the experience is almost the same, which is the goal!

## How to send HBD/HIVE from EVM Wallets

Now that you’ve sent some HIVE and HBD to your (or your friend’s) EVM wallet, let’s go ahead and do the reverse. To manage those HIVE/HBD in the VSC Network, you’ll need to log in to Altera. They will not appear in Metamask or any other EVM wallet you use, simply because those applications do not currently support the VSC Network. You can always verify the assets using your wallet address on the [VSC Blocks](https://vsc.techcoderx.com) explorer, as well. Once you’re ready to test Altera using an EVM wallet, follow the steps below after logging in with your wallet.

**Step 1:** Login to Altera using your favorite EVM wallet (400+ supported)

**Step 2:** Select the Quick Send button on the Home page.

**Step 3:**  Type the recipient address (EVM or Hive) in the To box, then select the recipient in the drop down list.

**Step 4:** Select the Token button, and select the asset you wish to send (HBD or HIVE).

**Step 5:** Enter the amount you wish to send and select the Network you are sending from under Origin Network, then select Next.

**Step 6**: Select Send and confirm the transaction with your EVM wallet

Congratulations! You’ve successfully sent HIVE from VSC Network using an EVM wallet to a Hive wallet on VSC! You’ll notice that some of your RCs have been used now that you have made a transaction using your EVM wallet. These RCs regenerate over time and can be acquired by holding HBD in your wallet. There is no need to stake your HBD for RCs; they will be locked automatically as you transact on VSC. # FAQs

- **How do I deposit HBD for Resource Credits on VSC?**

You can actually use this same guide! If you’re depositing from Hive to VSC, just set your own wallet address as the recipient on Quick Send. Make sure to select Hive as the Origin Network and VSC as the Recipient Network. [PeakD](https://peakd.com/) also supports this on their wallet page in Beta.

- **Is there an Altera mobile application?**

No. We’ve built the Altera web app to be compatible with both desktop and mobile.

- **Altera isn't recognizing my wallet on mobile. What do I do?**

Simply access Altera using the built-in browser of your wallet. 

- **Do I need different wallets for different assets?**

No! Native Asset Mapping allows any wallet to own any asset on VSC. This means that EVM and Hive wallets can own HIVE/HBD or any other asset. 

- **What is Native Asset Mapping?**

- **Are there really no gas fees?**

No gas fees. A simple Resource Credits system makes this possible.

# Introduction

As you may or may not know, the Hive blockchain has two native assets - HIVE and HBD. HIVE is used to power up your account for governance and curating, and can be converted to/from HBD. HBD, or Hive Backed Dollar, is an algorithmic stable asset backed by HIVE used for payments and a store of value. It can also be staked into savings to earn interest on the Hive blockchain. These two assets play vital roles in the Hive ecosystem in their own ways and have been used in the same ways for many years. With the launch of the VSC Network mainnet and our decentralized finance application, Altera in Beta, we feel it’s time to unveil something we’re very excited about. **Liquid Staking** is coming to HBD thanks to VSC smart contracts. Let’s take a moment to dive into what this means for you as a user and the greater Hive ecosystem. 

# What is Liquid Staking?

To really get into the weeds of what this means, we first have to understand what **liquid staking** is. In simple terms, it allows a user to stake an asset and, in exchange, receive a liquid asset tied to the locked asset that can be redeemed at any time for the underlying asset. It’s like having a magic piggy bank that lets you insert your coins for saving, and in return gives you derivative coins to use while your original coins are locked. Then, when you are ready and want to take those coins back out of the piggy bank, you just redeem the derivative coins.

Liquid staking makes assets more composable and unlocks value for the end user while still allowing them to take advantage of whatever staking reward there may be. It increases capital efficiency as well, because users do not need to choose between earning staking rewards or participating in DeFi opportunities that may be available. The network also benefits because capital can flow through its ecosystem freely, encouraging more use of DeFi. This creates a better experience overall for both the users and the applications on the network. For example, ETH staked on Lido gives the staking user stETH that can be used in many different DeFi applications. Aave allows users to deposit stETH as collateral for loans, and there are even yield farming options. We envision a future where all sorts of smart contracts that take advantage of liquid staking exist on VSC as well.

# Understanding HBD on VSC

This new feature introduces not only a new form of HBD but also a new way of thinking about the asset as a whole. It's no longer just a stablecoin on Hive, but the backbone of DeFi on VSC that will connect to outside ecosystems. It's important to understand the different states that HBD can exist in on VSC, so we have created a simple "guide" for that. This will make it easy to determine how much HBD you might need to interact with different applications or games on the network. On VSC, HBD can exist in 3 states: Liquid, HBD Savings, and RC Locked HBD. Here are the differences between them.  

- Liquid HBD: This is the actual HBD token that you can have in your wallet and send/receive freely, just like it exists on the Hive blockchain.
- RC Locked HBD: If you need to do any kind of transaction on VSC, some liquid HBD will be locked for Resource Credits, depending on how many RCs you need to perform the transaction. RC Locked HBD will unlock 5 days after the date of the transaction automatically in your wallet.
- Staked HBD: HBD staked on VSC in HBD Savings. It earns the same APR from Hive Savings, which is currently 15% APR, and is auto-claimed once per month. Soon, staked HBD will become liquid with the addition of the "sHBD" smart contract functionality. sHBD is the liquid version of Staked HBD on VSC that can be transferred, unlocking new use cases and liquidity.

# Why Liquid Staking?

Unlocking capital for users through the power of smart contracts will increase overall liquidity in the network. We want users to be able to take advantage of DeFi opportunities without compromise. If you want to put your HBD in Savings, you can do that and still react quickly to market movements with trades using the liquid asset. No more panicking and trying to unstake quickly just to make a trade, then move right back into Savings. Simply trade with your sHBD while your HBD is safe and sound, earning interest. 

We will be adding features to Altera that allow more uses of sHBD in the future, as more smart contracts are deployed as well. Other projects or applications will also be able to incorporate it into their systems with ease. For example, if someone wanted to create a yield farming platform that allowed users to stake their sHBD to earn another token, this would be possible. Maybe someone wants to allow users to pay in their game with sHBD as well as HBD, making it easier for users to interact without having to unstake. How about a lending platform that would allow users to deposit their liquid staked assets and get a collateralized loan? These are just some of the things we've seen other networks enable, and we want to bring them back to Hive with our own flavor - gas-free. Smart contracts unlock these possibilities, and we can't wait to see what gets created!

# Conclusion

As we are currently in the final stages of completing the work to enable HBD staking on VSC, we wanted to make sure that we provided the community with more information on how this will work. We've already started getting questions related to HBD staking, so this should make it easy to understand. Once deployed, we will open this up for beta testing as well on Altera. HBD Savings on VSC opens doors for many DeFi possibilities with the addition of the sHBD token, and we cannot wait to bring this online.  Being able to stake your HBD to earn interest and have access to that capital in the event you need to make a quick move in the market is extremely valuable. 

These are just some of the benefits, and more will come in the future with the growth of the network as more smart contracts are deployed. We hope this article has given you a clear idea of what will soon arrive on VSC for our favorite stablecoin. HBD Liquid Staking - Taking HBD to the Next Level

# Introduction

Cryptocurrency is often praised for its potential, but its usability remains a major barrier for adoption. For far too long, managing cryptocurrencies across multiple wallets and blockchains has only gotten more difficult. 
Some wallets do their best to make this easier on users, but none have nailed down a way to make this seamless.

## The Problem: Fragmentation and Complexity

Each blockchain operates like a separate island. To interact across them, users often need to:

- Install and manage multiple wallets. (chain-hopping)
- Buy native tokens just to pay for gas fees
- Learn complicated steps just to make a basic transfer
- Rely on centralized exchanges or wrapped assets with counterparty risk. (Up to 80% of $500B USD of currently bridged assets rely on centralized or semi-centralized infrastructure)

This limits adoption, introduces security concerns, and makes onboarding new users unnecessarily difficult.

VSC has a goal of removing the friction from the crypto “getting started” experience. Our approach is much different than anything that currently exists in the market, and we are proud to introduce our **major new innovation to address these existing problems**. 

## The Solution: Native Asset Mapping (NAM)

VSC’s **Native Asset Mapping (NAM)** technology is a fundamental breakthrough. It allows any supported asset to be **received or managed using any wallet**, regardless of the asset’s origin chain.

For example, **you can send BTC to a SOL wallet address**, and the recipient receives **native BTC**, secured on Bitcoin mainnet by VSC validators, overcollateralized 1.5:1 with HIVE and visible inside the VSC protocol.

## User Flow: How It Works

Here’s what a **typical NAM transaction** looks like using the **Altera app**:

1. **User opens Altera**, logs in with their preferred wallet that holds their BTC. 
2. Pays the **standard Bitcoin network fee** to deposit BTC to VSC.
3. User selects BTC as the send token.
4. Inputs the **recipient’s wallet address** and amount (e.g., a Hive, Solana, or Ethereum address).
5. **Clicks Send** – done! No extra fees inside VSC.
6. The recipient logs into Altera using Solana/ETH/Hive wallet and sees **BTC** available.
7. Users can then view, manage, and transfer those native assets via VSC, swap them, withdraw to their wallets, send them across chains, without needing to switch wallets or configure anything. 

## Behind the scenes:

- Native assets are deposited into VSC’s chain-specific vaults and are visible on VSC - 1:1 (Altera app).
- Vaults are secured by a **2/3 supermajority** of validators using TSS.
- Native assets are overcollateralized via Hive tokens. $1 USD of deposited asset requires $1.5 USD worth of Hive. ****
- All native tokens/coins **remain on their respective mainnets and remain exogenous to VSC.** 
They are simply represented on the internal VSC ledger.
- The sender inputs the receiver’s wallet address.
- The system maps the incoming asset to the receiving wallet’s address on the VSC network, in its internal ledger, while native assets remain locked in the VSC’s chain-specific vaults.

## How does Native Asset Mapping change the crypto world?

This model sets a new standard for user experience in crypto that has been needed for a very long time. **This approach aims to simplify the user experience by reducing fragmentation across blockchains, moving towards a more unified system designed for broader usability.** Removing the technical barriers to entry for average non-tech savvy users is something that has yet to be solved. It’s going to be easier to use Altera than any other DeFi application, simply because there are no restrictions on which blockchains users can interact with based on their wallet preference. Once assets are deposited onto VSC, transactions become gas-free, making trading very simple and predictable all thanks to VSC’s innovative Resource Credits model and Native Asset Mapping. 

## **Adoption Scenario Examples:**

### **Remittances Without Borders or Chain Awareness**

Imagine sending money home to your family:

- You have Bitcoin.
- Your brother has a Hive wallet.
- You send BTC to his Hive address.
- He receives native BTC instantly inside VSC, no need to know what chain anything came from.

You didn’t need to explain seed phrases, wrapped tokens, or bridge delays.

He didn’t need to download five apps to “be compatible.”

Crypto just worked.

VSC **abstracts the very idea of blockchain incompatibility**, removing the need for users to even understand what chain they’re on.

### **Merchant Adoption: Accept Any Crypto, From Any Wallet**

Let’s say a café owner wants to accept crypto.

Today, they’d need to:

- Pick one chain (ETH? BTC? SOL?)
- Install a compatible wallet
- Hope customers use the same blockchain

With **Altera and NAM**, it would work like this:

1. Merchant logs into Altera using **any wallet**.
2. They create a **payment request** or QR code.
3. A customer scans the QR code using **any wallet from any chain on their phone**.
4. They pay in **BTC, ETH, SOL, HBD, anything.**

### Two possible flows:

1. **Native Asset Mapping:** The merchant receives the **same token** the buyer used, even across chains.
2. **Cross-chain swap:** VSC automatically **swaps buyer's token** into the merchant’s preferred one.

No chain limits. No confusion. Abstracting away even the need for basic understanding of how crypto works.

We often hear different takes on what mass adoption of crypto and DeFi looks like, with no real plan to get there due to the friction of on-boarding. # Introducing Altera

The time has finally come for the Beta launch of VSC Network’s flagship application: Altera! If you have been following us or even our intern’s account on X, you might have seen us talking about Altera a lot lately without too much context. With the VSC Mainnet online for about a month and stabilized, it’s time to deploy the first of many applications on VSC. We’ve been building our DeFi application from the ground up with user experience as the focus, and we couldn’t be more proud of what we have created. Hive has desperately needed a “breakthrough” app to take it to the mainstream, and we truly believe that Altera could be that catalyst. Altera is next-gen DeFi built to turn Hive into a hub for cross-chain trading, payments, and more.

## What makes Altera different?

One of the first questions people generally ask when presented with a new DeFi application is - “what makes it different than what’s already available on the market?”. With its focus on cross-chain payments, Altera makes managing value across different assets extremely user-friendly. On top of this, every asset deployed into liquidity pools will be paired with HBD, similar to how every asset on Thorchain or Maya Protocol is paired with their native assets. This allows for better pricing and efficient routing of assets during sends or trades. Users can log into Altera with Social Login (Discord, Google, X, Facebook, etc…) and manage all of their assets just like if they had logged in with their crypto wallet. In addition to Social login, Altera supports EVM wallets like Metamask, CTRL, and Trust Wallet as well, allowing anyone with any wallet to log in and get started in seconds.

Of course, there is support for Hive wallets such as Hive Keychain, Hive Auth, Peak Vault, and even Ledger. Giving anyone in the world the ability to connect regardless of which wallet they prefer to use is something that no other DeFi application has done. Sure, you could connect any wallet, but you couldn’t manage any asset. For example. You couldn’t trade BTC by connecting your Metamask wallet to Uniswap. 

Altera takes your on-chain identity and ownership to a level never before seen. Metamask wallets can own BTC, SOL, and HIVE. Social Logins can manage HBD, ETH, and BTC on Lightning. Decentralized identities are becoming more powerful, creating a better overall user experience for anyone who wants a simple way to manage their assets. 

Cross-chain payments are something that we really don’t see talked about much at all. We feel it’s a very important piece of making DeFi easy for everyone, because it allows users to move value easily. For example, if you had Bitcoin on the Lightning Network and wanted to send your friend some HBD, you would have to go through quite a few steps to do that. With Altera, it’s as simple as connecting your wallet and selecting your Input/Output assets, and entering a recipient. In seconds, Altera handles the complex steps, and the recipient receives the selected Output asset. What does this look like? We knew you’d ask, so here’s a visual.

The steps are as simple as they get. Connect your wallet, select BTC, and which network it’s on. In this case, we’re sending BTC from Lightning. Then on the To side, select HBD on Hive Mainnet. Of course, the network charges a small fee for handling the different transactions in the background, and then the recipient receives the selected asset. No swapping between multiple assets, managing gas funds on each network, and then doing a whole separate transaction to actually send the payment. The really cool part is - if the recipient has never used VSC Network before, they just received their ticket to access. On VSC, there are no gas fees, you just need some amount of HBD in your wallet that gets locked/unlocked automatically for Resource Credits as transactions are made. Talk about easy onboarding!

Altera will also help VSC Network witnesses with staking and unstaking their HIVE for consensus. We’ve made it incredibly easy to manage staking, and of course deposits/withdrawals to Hive. Here you can see what a transaction will look like when checking your history on the app. You’ll get a link to both the Hive and VSC block explorers so you can see your operations on both chains, along with a button to easily copy the transaction ID for record keeping.

As with any Beta version of any app, please keep in mind that some features may not be available. Some things may not work. There will definitely be bugs. That’s why we need **you** to test and try to break everything so we can make our app ready for the masses. We encourage you to test anything available, whether it’s just depositing HIVE onto VSC and withdrawing back to Hive, or sending a cross-chain payment to a friend. We need as much feedback and testing as possible, so don’t be afraid to get involved. You certainly don’t need to be a crypto expert to use it, and that’s the ultimate goal.

## What does this mean for Hive?

One of the obvious questions people are asking is… What does all of this mean for Hive as a whole? Well, it means a lot of things. Hive is a very powerful blockchain that has been siloed for far too long by its own limitations and incompatibility with other ecosystems. Altera brings Hive into the future with true DeFi, connecting it with many chains through our liquidity pools. Users will be able to onboard capital into the ecosystem extremely easily, which is a complete 180-degree change from the current experience (especially in the U.S.). Whether they want to onboard fiat or swap Bitcoin for HIVE/HBD, they’ll be able to handle that in **one place with one wallet**. 

It may sound like a very simple thing, but this opens up many doors. Pairing assets like BTC, ETH, SOL, and more assets directly with HBD in liquidity pools creates demand for HBD. Demand for HBD creates demand for HIVE, especially considering the limited amount on the market. Swaps on Altera will generate revenue for the network and liquidity providers, which could also flow into the overall ecosystem. What we’ve built creates demand for HIVE and HBD automatically, all we have to do is bring the masses. There’s never been a better time to bring Hive into the broader crypto ecosystem as a cross-chain powerhouse, and that’s exactly what we are going to do.

We've worked with the @vsc.network team to provide developers who want to interact with the VSC Network with a set of keychain requests. 
On the developer side, it will make VSC integration easier, and on the user side, it will give a specific confirmation page for VSC requests, rather than just showing a raw JSON.

### How to use it?

If you're not a developer, you don't need to follow these steps, as this will eventually come to production.

Hive Keychain v3.10 BETA - VSC Requests for developers

VSC Proposal 2025: Smart Contracts, Cross Chain, v4v and Beyond

So, @ecoinstant, came to me the other day with a request: could we host a simple, one-page tool? Just a single file with HTML, Javascript, and CSS. Seemed straightforward enough.

The tool itself is designed to help users stake HIVE tokens onto the VSC sidechain. I took a look at the existing script, which was originally put together by @drlobes the Ferengi (gotta appreciate a fellow Star Trek fan!). Checking it out, I saw it was built using the `dhive` library and, importantly, required users to input their active key directly into the interface.

Now, asking users to paste their active key straight into a web tool... yeah, that didn't sit right with me. Keys, especially active keys, need careful handling. From a security perspective, it just felt like asking for potential problems down the road. You know me, always thinking about security.

So, I offered to rework the tool. My go-to solution for situations like this is to integrate Hive Keychain for handling the necessary signatures. This way, your key never actually leaves the safety of your Keychain extension, which is a much more secure approach for everyone. Instead of pasting a key, you'll just get a Keychain pop-up to approve the transaction.

Why build this? Well, I guess up until now, people wanting to stake HIVE on VSC were often manually crafting the custom JSON requests needed, maybe using the Keychain playground or writing little temporary scripts. That works, sure, but it definitely leaves room for typos or other errors. Since there's potential money involved when staking, making the process easier and reducing the chance of mistakes seems like a worthwhile effort. We figured we could make it simpler and safer.

Big props to @drlobes for creating the original script that laid the groundwork for this, included in the bennies!

Producing the first block is not just a technical accomplishment; it symbolizes the hard work, dedication, and collaboration of our entire team along with early node operators who believe in our vision. We can't forget about the [intern](https://x.com/vsc_intern), though, because none of this would be possible without his expertise (great coffee). [Our very first block](https://vsc.techcoderx.com/block/1) was produced by @actifit.vsc node operator yesterday, Apr 6 of 2025, 5:49:00 PM UTC. This first block serves as the cornerstone of the network. It’s the foundation for future transactions and interactions within the VSC ecosystem to be built. It is a testament to our shared commitment to building a scalable, efficient, and truly decentralized ecosystem.

With this first block in place, we are looking ahead to brighter horizons. We are poised to continue building and deploying the first Hive smart contracts. These smart contracts will open up a world of possibilities within the VSC Network, paving the way for groundbreaking applications and seamless user experiences. The possibilities are endless as we continue to develop, refine, and innovate. We are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and are committed to delivering a seamless experience for all our users. We are committed to delivering a network that empowers users, opens barriers, and connects the blockchain world seamlessly. This is just the beginning, after all.

As the [VSC Network Mainnet soft launch](https://peakd.com/vsc/@vsc.network/breaking-vsc-mainnet-soft-launch-date-confirmed) is just days away, we are happy to announce early access applications for anyone who wants to become a node operator. This application form will ensure a fast and open line of communication between our development team and the first VSC Mainnet node operators. This will be key during the first stages and will definitely make the VSC network stabilize faster as we will be able to easily communicate issues uncovered and resolve them quickly. Node operators will help secure the network and execute the smart contracts, so it's very important that we get as many as possible online. More nodes equal more security and decentralization, so if you have any technical knowledge, we encourage you to come on board. We will be available to help with any issues you may experience bringing your node online. 

At this time, we have already gotten commitments from some users to set up their nodes right away. The ultimate goal is to get as many nodes online as possible to ensure the security and decentralization of the network. These nodes will be the backbone for all functionality as well, such as smart contract execution and Consensus. On top of helping the network execute transactions, the network will begin accumulating fees in a treasury account, which will start to be paid out to node operators this Summer.. The minimum amount of HIVE stake required to apply to be an early node operator is 2,000 liquid HIVE, which will be locked to your node on VSC.

Early node operators are a crucial part of the mainnet and will be building blocks(literally) for the future of VSC. Some of you may have been operating a node for our testnet, which we greatly appreciate, as it has allowed us to solidify and refine our codebase. It should be an easy transition for you as you already have experience with our software and how to configure everything. ## Questions & Answers

### Why would I want to run a node?

Node operators support VSC node security and earn fees from the network (coming late summer). There is also an incentive in the form of a future VSC token airdrop.

### What's in it for the node runner?

Node operators will earn fees from the network in exchange for their contributions.

### What does running a node require? (tech knowledge, hardware, etc)

A basic understanding and experience with Command-Line Interface (CLI) is required, along with:

- A minimum of 8 GB of RAM
- 80 GB of storage space
- Minimal server hardware (raspberry pi or deskmini equivalent)
- A public IP address (static is preferred)

### What does the node do for the network?

Nodes help secure the VSC network and execute smart contracts. Nodes are the backbone for all functionalities, stability, and Consensus Participation.

# Save the Date: March 31st is when a new era begins!

**We are thrilled to announce the official soft launch date of the VSC Network Mainnet and as a result, the future of Hive.**

The wait is almost over, folks. This milestone marks the beginning of a new era for Hive. The road that led us here was not a straight one, nor a smooth one, but a challenging path full of hurdles with **months of hardcore coding, sleepless nights, and massive amounts of coffee**. We set out to build a Layer 2 network to bring smart contracts to Hive, with the longer-term goal of seamlessly connecting Hive to the world’s biggest liquidity layers. Enabling the future of DAPPs on Hive, and a major step forward in turning Hive into a cross chain interoperability hub. 

It is no secret within the community that Hive exists on an island of sorts, disconnected from many large sources of liquidity and ecosystems. With a complicated onboarding experience requiring the creation of a Hive account, limited cross-chain connections, and a lack of availability on centralized exchanges, especially in the U.S... Hive has been isolated for far too long, limiting its full potential. While Hive has support for an amazing toolset including unique usernames, free transactions, a native stablecoin, account abstraction, and so much more. It has been handycapped by two simple issues far too long: Smart Contracts, and over reliance on CEXs. Now, it's time for that to change. We are taking Hive to new levels with smart contracts, wrapped Bitcoin, and a next-gen decentralized exchange like none you've ever seen. Mark your calendars and prepare to cross a major milestone in this journey forward.

Important note - wrapped Bitcoin and the Altera DeFi front-end will not be available immediately at launch, and will be released in subsequent launch.

## The Journey

For the past 12 months, we have been designing, researching, and testing cutting-edge features on the VSC testnet, allowing us to map out our exact design going forward. In the process, we’ve released nearly 2 separate testnets, allowing us to gain invaluable knowledge on what we could build. As part of this journey, we were presented with the challenge of being required to rebuild the original VSC core software from Javascript to Golang, a much-needed improvement. Nonetheless, this has been a major topic of development over the last 8 months of work. Thankfully, we are nearly done with that migration, bringing a whole world of improvements from stability to features that were originally not thought of until recent. 

As part of the soft launch, we will be starting up a pre-mainnet network to do any final tests and bug fixes before it is officially live. Thanks to the work we have been doing on end-to-end testing, we have been able to fully test the VSC mainnet locally before even putting any of the code live. This has allowed us to fully develop and test features fully well before they even interact with the Hive blockchain, vastly shortening our development time. Our goal is to launch within the coming days, assuming no major issues are found during our final development and testing stretch.

Shortly after the Mainnet launch, we will be releasing a newly updated smart contract SDK and contract template to make development straightforward. In addition, we will be adding support for our second smart contract language: Golang. Golang is a great industry standard language with a large variety of already existing and compatible libraries, complementing the already supported, JavaScript-like language, [AssemblyScript](http://assemblyscript.org/). This marks a major advancement towards democratizing smart contract access and brings us one step closer to our goal of a code in any language future.

### What comes next

You might be thinking to yourself, “Well, I’m not a developer. What does this mean for me?”. Totally fair, so let’s break it down for the average user. One of the biggest issues Hive faces is the complicated and fragmented onboarding experience. With VSC, users will be able to seamlessly connect using their EVM wallet (plus more soon) and interact with the Hive blockchain.  If you're running a project that relies on being able to easily trade between HIVE and HBD, you have probably noticed that there is not a lot of liquidity on the Hive internal market. VSC is going to solve both of these problems with non-Hive wallet support and the first-ever HIVE-HBD liquidity pool. These are just the first steps in our longer-term vision of connecting Hive to other blockchains via decentralized bridges.  

### The Future of Login On Hive ✅

Remember when you first came to Hive and had to go through the process of downloading a wallet, getting your 5 different keys, and all of the complicated steps to get started? That’s a thing of the past. VSC will allow anyone to connect whichever wallet they prefer (EVM wallet and social login support out of the gate) and start interacting with Hive through our front-end application. This means buying, selling, and sending Hive assets without the need to ever create a Hive account. A little further down the road, [VSC account](https://peakd.com/vsc/@vsc.network/vsc-and-hive-accounts-explainer) users will even be able to create blog posts and comments on Hive + earn rewards!

The VSC launch opens many doors for existing Hive dApps to utilize VSC's [EVM wallet compatibility](https://peakd.com/hive/@vsc.network/hive-is-now-evm-compatible-thanks-to-vsc--7ha). Enabling end users to seamlessly use their EVM wallet to interact with dApps or on-chain games seamlessly. At launch, EVM wallets will be able to own, send, and receive Hive assets without intermediaries. Picture a brand new user landing on your game, and they're presented with the option to use their existing wallet or social login. The friction of onboarding is completely removed, and the user can start playing right away without thinking twice. Then, after they have been playing and earning crypto, if your game allows that, they are able then to seamlessly trade those assets with HIVE/HBD/BTC. Hive is about to get so much easier. 

### ALTERA: Next-gen DeFi

Once we have the Mainnet live and stable, our next step will be the deployment of our DeFi application, currently called "Altera". Altera will be your DeFi hub, allowing enabling users to login with Hive, EVM, or Social login options to start. With a huge focus on creating an easy-to-use and extremely user-friendly interface, it will feel very similar to a traditional finance application. Manage assets from different chains, provide liquidity to earn yield, and trade your favorite assets with ease. No complicated signup process, no transaction fees, fully secure and decentralized. Altera will make Hive the place where any user, no matter their chain preference or knowledge about crypto, will come together. 

Imagine using your Metamask wallet to manage your Hive and Solana assets. Better yet, use your Hive Keychain wallet to manage your Ethereum and Bitcoin. What about using your Gmail account to manage your assets on any supported chain? This is the kind of experience we are bringing to life with our DeFi application. We are already working on selecting the first chains that will merge on Altera, with a clear focus on Bitcoin.

Bringing wrapped Bitcoin to Hive will not only attract new capital into the ecosystem but it will also help with scaling it as an alternative to Lightning Network. Using Bitcoin can be very expensive depending on the size of the transactions you're doing, and Lightning Network has a huge transaction failure rate along with its own challenges. Wrapped Bitcoin on Hive will launch a few months after the mainnet launch as we continue testing and fine-tuning our Bitcoin chain relay. There will be an announcement for this as well, so keep an eye out for future updates.

### HIVE-HBD liquidity pool

In the following weeks after the launch of the VSC Mainnet, our DeFi application "Altera" will open its doors to its first users outside of testing. In conjunction with the application launch, the first-ever HIVE-HBD liquidity pool will go live, allowing for true DeFi to kick off on Hive. Enabling price-efficient trading between HIVE and HBD, reducing slippage, eliminating spread, and incentivizing liquidity. Further stabilizing the price of HBD due to increased liquidity. Users will also have the ability to deposit HIVE and HBD as liquidity to the pool, allowing them to earn yield from swap fee just like any other DEX AMM Pool. Longer term, we aim to pair HBD with other major stablecoins such as USDC and DAI. 

The HIVE-HBD liquidity pool will make trades more efficient, offer more liquidity, and enable smart contracts to easily interact with the market. This liquidity pool removes the need for creating an internal market order and having to wait for it to be matched. Faster trade execution with a direct liquidity pool will give users real-time pricing and more reliable trades. It will also allow the execution of trades at any size, so long as the user accepts the slippage. The HIVE-HBD pool will be the first of many deployed on VSC, and we can't wait to add more as we build value for the ecosystem. Say goodbye to the days of visiting multiple different DeFi applications to trade assets on different chains using different wallets. VSC puts it all in one place with a super-simple interface powered by next-gen smart contracts. 

We will have more details on liquidity pools and features after the launch. We truly believe this will be extremely valuable for the Hive Blockchain and will expand horizons greatly as we continue adding more connections.

## FAQs:

- **I am a developer. What language should I use for smart contracts?**

VSC uses WebAssembly (or WASM) to power its smart contracts. WASM enables developers to write smart contracts in any WASM-compatible language, taking advantage of thousands of already existing libraries and tools. The VSC Smart Contract SDK will initially support Golang and AssemblyScript. We will gradually support more languages as time goes on.

- **Can I create tokens on VSC now?**

Token support is possible via VSC smart contracts in a similar fashion to how they are done on Ethereum, Solana, etc... However, at this point in time, we have not yet built standardized token formats similar to EIP-721.

- **Can I move a token from Hive Engine to VSC?**

We do not support any kind of bridging or migration from HE to VSC at this time. We are working to address this issue in the future.

- **Can I create blog posts using VSC and an EVM wallet?**

Not at the moment; we are working on ways to enable posting from a VSC account in collaboration with our various Hive partners.

- **Will there be transaction fees on VSC?**

Similar to transactions on Hive, transactions on VSC consume [resource credits](https://peakd.com/vsc/@vsc.network/how-resource-credits-work-on-vsc) but do not have a monetary cost.

The L2 transaction page now displays transactions that are in the mempool to be included in a block. The page auto-refreshes upon transaction inclusion in a block followed by transaction output, without user interaction.

Most recent transactions will also have the signature CID displayed which links to the transaction signature on IPFS.

# Introduction

What an absolute blast HiveFest 9 was. From the incredibly beautiful scenery to the connections that we made with everyone at the event, we couldn't be happier. Our team had the opportunity to meet people from the community and build meaningful relationships with other projects. We were thrilled to showcase our brand new technology in person and show off what we've been building for the past year. Even if unfortunately you were not able to be there in person, the entire event was [live-streamed](https://youtu.be/MQCuJQSxYDA?t=5252) so you can still see everything that we showed off. Join us on our journey in this post.

# The road to Split, Croatia

The VSC team is a diverse group in more than just a few different places of the world, so there's not an actual "road" to Split, Croatia. There was definitely a lot of distance, though, and that means a ton of flights, hotels, and jet lag. We thought it would be fun to share some photos from some of our team members' travels and share some of those experiences with you. We started our travel a few days in advance as we knew there would be multiple flights, and there was always the possibility of a flight delay. Once in the air, though, the breathtaking views took over and all that was left to do was enjoy it.

Day flights turned to night, the small snacks and drinks came down the aisle again. We had almost arrived and the anticipation was building.

After many hours in the sky over, we had arrived in Germany and it was time to get ready for the event. We still had a little bit of preparation to do before our presentation was ready so we spent our first day working on that. Geo even had a chance to go to Wurst. Definitely not the "Wurst" part of the trip, as the food was surely awesome.

After a final flight, we had arrived in Croatia at our Airbnb and it was almost go-time. Opening drinks and the first meetup were a blast. Having the opportunity to connect with people prior to the actual presentation days is always a great way to break the ice. Once opening drinks concluded, we headed off to rest before day 1.

# HiveFest Day 1

While we did not present on day 1, we did have the opportunity to see some great presentations from hardcore Hivers and projects at **Gallery Meštrović**. We took this as a chance to get a peak into some projects for potential collaboration or partnerships. VSC is always on the lookout for possible collaborations, and where better to find them than HiveFest? After information and presenting the "5 time attendee" awards to those who have gone to 5 different HiveFest events, there was a panel discussion between developers.

After the panel discussion, we saw presentations from Worldmappin, Miss Bitcoin and McSamm, and Khal from Inleo. There were many presenters talking about the awesome projects they're working on.  We won't bore you by listing out every single presentation and speaker, but we did want to share some photos from the day 1 presentations. We also wanted to highlight some of the projects already working on integrating VSC network, such as Hive Keychain @keychain adding VSC transaction history, and others that have expressed interest.

@geo52rey and @platinium were thrilled as it was their first every HiveFest experience. They had the opportunity to mingle with diverse community and really become true Hivers. If you haven't had the chance to attend one, we highly recommend making arrangements for next year as soon at the location and venue are announced.

Without being able to take you there ourselves, it's really hard to express the level of dedication that this community has to the platform and overall decentralization. We truly are a decentralized network state when you think about it, and the community is very passionate about freedom. HiveFest is not your average crypto or blockchain conference by any means. From the incredible locations and venues to the bond you will feel with the community... It is truly priceless.

# HiveFest Day 2

On day 2, it was time for the VSC team to take the stage after @yabapmatt from Splinterlands and @arcange finished their presentations. While we anxiously awaited our turn, we prepared our demonstration and slides. Then, we headed to the stage and introduced some new team members! After some great talks from @vaultec and @geo52rey, @platinium was ready to show off his own demo. It's a simple proof-of-concept game that demonstrates the readiness for development on VSC. The full game logic runs inside a smart contract on VSC and the contract determines the winner based on a random number generated. The random number generation is done by the transaction ID, and is deterministic.

The next demonstration we had was the most exciting. What we showed off was the ability to buy HIVE in 30 seconds using CashApp! 

This takes advantage of the Bitcoin Lightning feature built right into CashApp. Our DeFi frontend lets users enter the amount of HIVE they wish to purchase, and then generates a Lightning QR code. All the user has to do at that point is scan the QR code and authenticate using their device. CashApp is one of the most-commonly used financial applications in the US with over 60 million users, and it makes buying HIVE extremely easy because most users have already completed KYC in the app.

# Conclusion

Once all the presentations had come and gone, it was time to move on to having a little bit of fun. We had the opportunity to go on an incredible boat ride, which may have been in extremely cold weather as you can see. We got nice and cozy with everyone.

As you can imagine, we also did our fair share of goofing around. After all, this is about community and connecting with one another.

Sadly, all good things must come to an end, and HiveFest concluded in what seemed like a blur. Now we have to get back to hardcore coding and make sure that next year's demonstration will be even bigger. We thoroughly enjoyed our time presenting and connecting with so many different individuals. Hopefully you enjoyed our demonstration and can see the power of smart contracts for Hive.

# Introduction

One of the biggest complaints you will hear when someone is talking about using cryptocurrencies or blockchain products is that they’re complicated, or too hard for the user to understand. This is a very common theme across different cryptocurrency applications as they are typically built by existing crypto users, for already-existing crypto users and often requiring tech knowledge to use. More often than not, this results in the user experience being poor for even crypto natives, and much worse for brand new users.

Our vision for DeFi is to build a project with a heavy emphasis on user experience, much in a similar way to traditional finance applications. Something user-friendly, easy to understand, and simple enough for someone’s grandmother to use. We all hear different projects and founders talk about mass cryptocurrency adoption all the time, but until your mother can use it, there won’t be that kind of adoption. Everything from the core protocol to the frontend application is being built with usability in mind.

# UX in blockchain today

When learning about a new crypto or blockchain ecosystem, it can be very intimidating, especially for brand-new users who don't have prior experience. Thinking about this from a standpoint of simplicity, we recognize that the signup or onboarding process for the majority of blockchains is just too complicated. Often forcing users to download a new wallet application, write down their seed phrase, and secure their private keys. Some even require additional steps to get started, which is already a pretty bad experience. Keep in mind, that this is just to get set up with a wallet before doing any actual transactions. Think of it like this - do you need to get a new driver’s license or passport every time you open a bank account? No. This experience is sub-par at best and is not sustainable for everyday users, much less the masses.

Once the user finally does get their new wallet application set up, they have to fund the wallet with whatever asset plus some additional assets for transaction fees. After all of this, they are finally ready to start using the new ecosystem, and if they have never had this sort of onboarding experience... They likely have preconceived notions about the overall experience of cryptocurrency, even though they haven't even had a chance to touch any of the applications. Often this process discourages users, especially in the case of Hive, because it's long and complex.

## Account data visibility

Diving deeper into this, think about a brand new Ethereum user for a moment. **Once they start making transactions, how do they even view their transaction history?**

The majority of existing DeFi applications don’t provide any kind of transaction history, and if they do, it’s only what happened in that particular instance of being signed in. Taking that a step further, they typically don’t include a lot of crucial information and rely on redirecting users to other applications. So to look at their transactions, the user has no choice but to visit a 3rd party application such as Etherscan (Ethereum block explorer). Etherscan has its own set of issues in terms of usability and user-friendliness, so we'll just share an example for you. Here's a peak at a random Ethereum wallet on Etherscan.

This is peak auditability in the EVM ecosystem currently. Looks very user friendly doesn’t it? **Definitely not!**

Trying to determine where funds were sent, which wallet they were sent from, and what actually happened with a particular transaction is hard unless you're familiar. Looking at the screenshot above, you can easily see that the interface is very complex and doesn't provide any sort of guidance on what things mean. Wallet addresses are strings of random letters and numbers, transactions aren't clear, and the filtering is very hard to understand. What's really unfortunate is the fact that Etherscan is the best interface for transaction history that currently exists in the entire EVM space.

Moving on from the lack of transaction history in an easy-to-understand format, most of these platforms don't even have an onboarding flow. If you visit any of the most popular DeFi platforms out there, you'll find that there is no way to easily create an account and get started. Essentially, passing the burden of setting up a wallet on to the user via a completely separate website or app. In fact, these existing interfaces don't even point the user in the right direction to get set up. They assume that the user either already has a supported wallet, or knows how to set one up.

Looking at Uniswap, for example, you can see that there's no clear way to "sign up" and get started. You really only have the option to connect a wallet you already have or figure out how to create one on your own. This is not the sort of experience that we want our users to have. Our DeFi platform will provide everything the user needs to sign in and get started, even if they have never used a crypto platform before. Just imagine telling your mom to go to the above site and sign in. Odds are, she would land on the page, and immediately get confused by the interface. VSC aims to make DeFi easy enough for your average X or facebook user with a completely new approach.

# Changing the experience

We're building a new DeFi experience from the ground up, starting with a simple thing that every platform in the crypto space should have: **account data visibility**. It is quite simple, but as we mentioned before, many DeFi applications lack any form of human-readable transaction history for the average user. The majority of existing DeFi platforms pass the burden of managing their account and transactions on to the user. Requiring your users to access their transaction history from an entirely separate website is the "norm", unfortunately. Even well-experienced crypto users can get confused with the number of different block explorers and wallets.

As you use the VSC DeFi platform, you will always have your transaction history available, regardless of which sign in method you use. To make it even better, you will be able to filter your transaction easily, and even get a summary of your activity on VSC. Did we mention that this will be on the exact same interface, and not a totally separate website? Transaction history on our DeFi platform will feel very familiar, even for users that have never used crypto before, because we are modelling our interface based on traditional banking applications. 

Imagine a world where you sign in with your EVM wallet or social login that you use every day, then start trading instantly without buying assets to pay for transaction fees. This is the exact experience we are working on refining, and it will be a complete game changer for user-friendliness of crypto. VSC users will be able to do everything they need to on one single interface, such as swapping, providing liquidity, and even wrapping/unwrapping assets! Our dashboard will make your account overview super easy to understand, providing a chart that updates in real time as your assets fluctuate in value.

We're rolling everything into one DeFi "super app" that will enable anyone to interact with VSC in just a couple seconds. Regardless if you use an EVM wallet, a Hive wallet, or even a social login, you will have the exact same experience. Our DeFi platform takes the current user experience of getting started with crypto and makes it more friendly, faster, and much easier. Gone are the days of needing a different wallet for Hive assets and assets on other blockchains like Ethereum. We are heading fast toward a cross-chain future, and this is a giant step in that direction. 

In terms of UX/UI, any user will be familiar with our DeFi platform as it will feel like their regular banking app or website. This opens the gates for all kinds of new users to seamlessly integrate our application into their daily financial lives. Our easy-to-use DeFi suite will bring new life into the Hive ecosystem and connecting existing users to the rest of the crypto world. No users will have to struggle to perform transactions, track where their funds went, or understand the interface on VSC. We will show the world how simple cryptocurrencies and DeFi can be when it's built with a user-first approach. We believe that even avid crypto users with a lot of experience in the space will be blown away when we show what's possible with our approach. 

## Conclusion

At the end of the day, mass adoption will only come when the world is able to start using crypto as if it were a regular banking application like PayPal. Until then, all we can do is keep building and changing the narrative of what crypto should look like. 

In essence, using the VSC DeFi platform will require minimal knowledge of cryptocurrency or blockchain technology. It's designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of their level of understanding or which wallet they use. We look forward to helping bring crypto and DeFi to the masses. User Experience Matters in Crypto.

# Introduction

It’s no secret that thousands of different cryptocurrencies exist on hundreds (or even thousands) of different blockchains. It’s great to see more awesome technology be developed in other ways, however this innovation comes at the cost of fragmentation. Long gone are the days of being familiar with just a couple of different blockchains and feeling like you have this whole cryptocurrency thing figured out.

With the large number of different blockchains, tokens, NFTs, and more, it becomes clear that there would be a need for something to link those different chains together. Looking at USDT, for example, it exists on 15+ different blockchains, yet it is difficult to move across chains requiring KYC and high minimums. This starts to lead down the road of cross chain bridging, we will discuss in-depth in this article.

# What is a bridge?

A bridge functions as a link between two different blockchains, enabling the transfer of assets and data across them. There are a number of different types of bridges, and different bridges with varying blockchain support. Cryptocurrency bridges play a crucial role in interoperability between blockchain networks, enhancing the overall user experience and expanding possibilities in DeFi.

Some allow the transfer of native assets like USDT between different blockchains, and some allow you to get what's known as a "wrapped" version of the original asset on a different blockchain. While these types of bridges do offer similar functionality, they are fundamentally different in the way that they receive and issue assets. It's important for users to understand some of these key differences because each has their place in the space. 

## Wrapped token bridges

In nearly all major blockchain, at least one bridge exists that allows the wrapping of assets to be used on different blockchains. You might know or have heard about some of them such as:

- Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC): A wrapped version of BTC on the Ethereum blockchain that allows users to use BTC in smart contracts and DeFi products. It’s important to note that the Wrapped Bitcoin bridge is centralized and requires the users to trust a 3rd party custodian.
- Wrapped Ethereum (WETH): A wrapped version of ETH (on Ethereum and Layer 2’s) usable in smart contracts and decentralized exchanges to interact with other ERC-20 tokens.

At VSC, we prefer decentralized options for a number of different reasons, but WBTC is one of the most widely used wrapped assets. There are more decentralized options such as IBTC on Polkadot, and of course we have developed our own wrapping technology. WBTC and WETH are just some examples for context.

A wrapped token bridge locks the original asset in a smart contract (preferable) or a custodian (third party) on the source blockchain, ensuring that the asset is held as a reserve to back the new asset. After that, the bridge contract issues a wrapped token on the destination blockchain, such as wBTC for example. This token represents the original asset and can be used within the ecosystem of the destination blockchain, allowing users to participate in applications and other blockchain-specific activities without losing the value of their original holdings. The collateral asset (BTC in this case) is held to ensure that wBTC on Ethereum has a 1:1 backing at all times. With a 1:1 backing of trusted custody, users can interact with wBTC with confidence, knowing they can always get back their BTC.

When a user wants to redeem their wBTC for BTC on the Bitcoin blockchain, the process is reversed. The equivalent tokens (wBTC) on the destination blockchain are burned, in order to get them out of circulation (in most cases). Consequently, the original asset (BTC) is unlocked from the smart contract (or custodian) on the source blockchain and returned to the user. This mechanism ensures that the total supply of assets remains consistent across both blockchains, maintaining the integrity and value of the assets involved. In the case of wBTC, the process is a little more complex, but hopefully, this example helps you understand the important parts.

## Native asset bridges

Some assets have native support on different blockchains/L2s, and those are known as "cross-chain assets" when they are moved from one blockchain to another. In comparison to wrapped assets like wBTC, a cross-chain asset is the exact same token, just migrated to a different chain. You could argue that these assets are more secure as they don't require custody of a collateral asset. Some of the most popular bridges that allow transfer of native assets across different chains are:

- Polygon Bridge: Facilitates the transfer of assets between the Ethereum blockchain and the Polygon network, known for its layer 2 scalability solutions. It enables faster and cheaper transactions compared to Ethereum's mainnet.
- Wormhole: A decentralized bridge that allows the transfer of different assets between Layer 1 blockchains.

These bridges typically operate in a decentralized way with smart contracts for security. This reduces counter-party risk because the end user does not have to trust a third party to custody their assets. The Polygon Bridge, for example, serves as a way to move ERC-20 tokens or NFTs between the Ethereum and Polygon blockchains in a trust-less way. 

When using the Polygon Bridge, the asset is locked on Ethereum in a smart contract, before the asset is issued on the Polygon chain. The smart contract generates a cryptographic proof that the asset has been locked on the Ethereum, and then uses that proof to issue the asset on Polygon. These proofs serve as a way to ensure that assets are only locked/issued when a proof is generated, keeping the assets balanced.

A similar mechanism is in place for the other direction as well. When an asset is moved from Polygon to Ethereum, the assets are burned on Polygon. The smart contract generates a cryptographic proof showing that the assets were burned on Polygon, and then the assets are unlocked on Ethereum. This ensures that the token supply stays the same, and prevents double-spending of assets. No need to trust a third party with custody of a collateral asset, everything is handled automatically and in a decentralized way.

# What are we bringing to the table?

If you haven’t been following our development, let us bring you up to speed with what we have been working on. Since the inception of this project, a primary goal has been to develop a decentralized and secure wrapping technology. This is extremely important because it means that there is a way for outside capital to move into VSC easily. There are a ton of advantages to using wrapped assets on our network, such as faster transactions and zero transaction fees. Once an asset is wrapped and on VSC, it is able to move around with the speed of Hive, making DeFi much more attractive. If you have ever tried to use Bitcoin for anything, you’ll know it's incredibly slow and the fees are very expensive, so can understand how amazing this is. Here's a sneak peek at the DeFi application we are building (this is not the final design).

### Bitcoin wrapping on VSC

Some of you might remember the time when we opened up our test DeFi site for anyone that wanted to test our Bitcoin wrapping system. **We had users all over the world sending and receiving BTC using their Hive wallets!** It was definitely an exciting time as our proof of concept came to life. Here is a quick screenshot showing a send transaction and a wrap transaction moving BTC on VSC.

Enabling a fully decentralized Bitcoin wrapping system is not the only thing we are working on in this regard. Our technology will allow users to send BTC directly from their Hive wallet to a BTC wallet, and vice versa. It will also enable users to buy and sell HIVE/HBD directly using BTC. We are also working in collaboration with @v4vapp, which is a bridge between Hive and wrapped assets on Bitcoin Lightning Network. We are heavily focused on making **HBD the stable coin of the Lightning Network** and creating powerful payment technology for everyday use.

We plan to make our BTC wrapping system as decentralized as possible, and we even plan to open the system to other assets in the future. We will begin expanding asset support, starting with LTC, DOGE, and DASH in the future. We have also acknowledged efforts to bring Hive to the broader ecosystem using protocols like Thorchain and Maya Protocol. We believe that having Hive connected to these ecosystems will be the catalyst to propel Hive further as a transaction layer. 

Hive needs connections to the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem, and we are playing a crucial part in that. This is just a small piece of our overall vision to make Hive a hub for DeFi and cross-chain trading. The power of smart contracts is being unleashed as you read, and we’re just getting started. What is a cross-chain Bridge? - Primer with VSC

# Introduction

One question that will always be asked when getting started with a new blockchain is, “are there transaction fees?”. In most cases, the answer is “yes”, and it really comes down to how expensive those fees are at any given time. The majority of users in the cryptocurrency space, whether it be an Ethereum user or Bitcoin user, have paid some kind of transaction fee to have their transaction included in the blockchain. This is standard for most blockchains, especially Proof of Work chains.

The Hive blockchain, along with VSC, are much different in this aspect because they do not require transaction fees. In place of transaction fees, Hive transactions each have a different Resource Credits cost to perform the action. You might be thinking to yourself, “Well, that’s just a different kind of transaction fee”. While that is a totally fair assessment at the surface level, it’s quite different when you dive into the details of how it all works.

# Resource Credits on Hive

Instead of having variable transaction fees, Hive uses a fee-less system that leverages rechargeable Resource Credits (RCs). RCs are assigned to your account based on your Hive Power, which is staked HIVE. Each different type of transaction on Hive consumes a different amount of RCs, depending on the complexity of the transaction and the state of the network’s activity. 

RCs recharge at a rate of 20% per 24-hour period, so accounts will only be able to use the amount of RC relative to that account’s Hive Power. It typically takes about 5 days for an account to fully recharge if all of the RCs have been used. Once all RCs are depleted, the user can stake more HIVE as Hive Power to get more or wait for their RCs to recharge. RCs are a way for the Hive blockchain to maintain its scalability and speed by ensuring that accounts  only allocated bandwidth proportionate to their Hive Power.

This RC system helps ease the friction of new users interacting with the blockchain by making transaction fees virtually free. One of the biggest hurdles to overcome when starting out on a new blockchain is figuring out how to pay for transactions as they will typically cost something. Compared to Ethereum, for example, all users will need to purchase additional ETH that will be spent every time they make a transaction. These fees are can get quite expensive, and at the same time it can represent a financial risk by making them decide between holding the assets or using them for fees. Hive's Hive Power and RC system makes a lot more sense, and ends up not costing the user anywhere near as much.

# What about Resource Credits on VSC?

Now that you know how RCs work on Hive, lets start with the key difference between Hive and VSC in this aspect: **you won’t need to stake your assets until you make a transaction**. 

Normally on Hive, you would need to stake HIVE in order to get more RCs for your daily activity. With VSC, you just need to make sure to have enough HBD before you make a transaction. This is liquid HBD, held on the VSC network. On VSC, X amount of RCs are assigned to each HBD. This removes the need to stake any assets before making transactions and also removes the need to make an additional transaction to stake an assets, leading to an even easier experience getting started. When you make a transaction, Y amount of HBD is automatically locked for a set period, proportionate to the amount of RCs needed.

RCs on VSC are non-liquid assets that are set based on your liquid HBD and as you use them, your HBD will be locked Y period of time. For example, X amount of RCs is assigned to 1 HBD, so, if you perform a transaction that consumes Z amount of RCs, Z/X = amount of HBD will get locked for Y period of time. While time passes and you don't perform any transactions , your HBD will slowly unlock in your wallet. The key here is that as soon as a user receives HBD, they can already start making transactions on VSC.

As HBD is transferred between wallets on VSC, the RCs associated with that HBD move with it. This means that new accounts are ready to start transacting the moment they have an HBD balance. This is a drastically different experience than what is currently available on most blockchains. We strongly believe that onboarding should be incredibly simple, and having an RC system designed this way is a great start.

It is important to note that HBD locked for RCs is not the same as sHBD (staked HBD) on VSC. If a user wants to stake their HBD, they will receive liquid sHBD which can be transferred. We've carefully designed our transaction system around HBD, and it exists in a few different forms on our network. ## Fixing RC delegations

Currently on Hive, there is a huge issue with the delegation of RCs. That issue is the problem of over or under delegation of RCs. The majority of Hive accounts even with RC delegations either don’t use their RCs, wasting those of the provider, or uses too much and runs into roadblocks. Users with large amounts of Hive Power are constantly accruing RCs that they will never use effectively, creating a negative impact on the new user onboarding experience. Keeping in mind that RCs are limited and a way to distribute network bandwidth, this is a big problem and a very inefficient system. 

Looking at this from the perspective of a dApp, like a game, that covers the cost to onboard a new user, it increases the RC costs significantly due to this inefficiency. New users essentially get more expensive in terms of RCs the more Hive usage grows and RCs are allocated to more users. This results in dApps having to buy more HIVE to stake as Hive Power over time just to continue onboarding users, even if those users do not actually use any the RCs. The way Hive's RC system is designed results in a long-term problem with account creation costs and is highly inefficient. There needs to be a better way to manage RC distribution.

## Taking RC delegations a step forward

When designing the RC system for VSC, we took this issue into account. That is one of the reasons why RCs are available immediately without staking. Now, we are taking RC delegation a step further by enabling RCs to be delegated instantly on a per transaction basis, as opposed to managing long standing delegations. This is a substantial improvement to the current model of managing a delegation which may or may not be used, in favor of a much more dynamic approach that properly addresses dApp needs.

As long as a DApp has enough liquid HBD in their wallet, they can instantly delegate RCs to a new user to get an account and make all the transactions the user needs. This design removes the friction from signing up and starting to make transactions, turning it into a seamless and more efficient process. DApps also have the ability to include spam prevention measures to ensure RCs can't be taken advantage of, and this could be done down to the transaction type level. It also opens the door to monetization models or subscription models in exchange for on-demand RCs. Our goal is to make this model highly scalable and efficient.

Another thing to note is that because VSC unlocks smart contracts for Hive, RCs can be used for more different types of interactions. Your users will be able to do more complex operations such as NFT minting or more computationally intensive tasks, while RCs remain cost-efficient. This is vastly different than the simple interactions that currently exist on Hive. such as commenting or posting blogs. 

## In Conclusion

Traditionally, blockchains have a pretty simple fee structure for transactions that puts the cost on the user. Hive paved the way for us to design a bandwidth management system for VSC that would be radically different. We have taken Hive's Resource Credits protocol to another level, and made it more flexible. With scalability and flexibility at the forefront of our vision for VSC, we have made the RCs system much more efficient in the long-term. Our network will be able to adapt and scale to the needs of just about any application, without the limitations of an inefficient network bandwidth management system. This is just another way that VSC is going to propel Hive into the future with hardcore innovation and development.

How Resource Credits work on VSC

# Introduction

One of the most important parts of any ecosystem within cryptocurrency or Web3 is the onboarding experience. Creating a friction-less experience for new users to be able to access the ecosystem is extremely important. When we started working on VSC, this was at the forefront of our vision because we want it to be very easy and friction-less to get started. 

The typical process for getting started with any new blockchain or cryptocurrency ecosystem would be something like this… Download a wallet, write down your secret recovery phrase, save your private key, and then you are ready to go. The Hive onboarding experience can be very high-friction for a new user, and even for an experienced blockchain user. We wanted to completely re-imagine this experience. It should all happen automatically, and make the process completely seam-less. You should be able to sign in with whatever method you prefer - a social account, an EVM wallet, or Hive sign in options like Hive Keychain. We are bringing this vision of super-simple DeFi onboarding to life, powered by VSC.

# The current Hive onboarding flow

Before VSC was in development, there were just a few different ways to get a Hive account. Different front-ends for Hive have their own sign-up methods, which typically involve some sort of payment (around $3) to create the account. You could also get an account from an existing user if they had enough Resource Credits, or if they were willing to burn 3 HIVE. You can think of this as an invitation from someone that already has a Hive account and plenty of Resource Credits, or 3 Hive to create your account. 

There are a couple different applications that allow users to sign up for free, and the application covers the cost (3 HIVE or Resource Credits) to create your account. When an account is created in this manner, you will typically need to provide more information such as an email address or a social login to prove you are human. Requiring this information prevents bots from creating accounts and taking advantage of the free service.

Creating an account this way gives you access to a “Hive Account”, which means you have a Hive wallet that you own and can perform any operation on the blockchain. These operations may be anything from creating a long-form blog post, staking HIVE as Hive Power, or even uploading videos to decentralized applications such as 3Speak. With a brand new Hive Account you will have enough Resource Credits to do some transactions and get started. You are also able to set up a Recovery Account, in case you lose access to the account or the account is somehow compromised. 

As you can see, in order to create a Hive Account you either had to pay, get help from someone with an existing Hive Account, or prove you are human to create a free one. This creates a very high-friction onboarding experience for users that wanted to quickly get a Hive account. Regular blockchain users are not familiar with this type of onboarding flow and it can be a jarring experience. That is one of the reasons have been creating a way for any user to interact with our DeFi products, or any service on VSC Network, without the need for a Hive Account. 

# The VSC onboarding flow

The onboarding flow of any blockchain or cryptocurrency ecosystem is extremely important. This should be easy, seamless, and fast. If you think about connecting to something like X, for example, you will be able to create an account and start in a few seconds. We should have a similar experience for users that want to interact with the VSC Network, as well.

VSC Accounts are not actual accounts, per se, but are actually any compatible wallets we add to our ecosystem that allow users to sign in. You can think of a VSC Account as any wallet we support on a different blockchain, instead of a separate account. VSC will enable anyone to sign in using a social login, key DIDs (part of the Decentralized Identities standard), or [EVM wallet](https://inleo.io/@vsc.network/hive-is-now-evm-compatible-thanks-to-vsc--7ha) to quickly create an account. Signing in with a VSC Account in any way comes with some limitations, but this makes it much easier to get started. With VSC, there is no need to pay for an account, or provide additional information to prove you’re human. Simply sign in with your preferred method and VSC handles the rest. 

Using a social login works a little different than using an EVM wallet. When you use a social login on our DeFi frontend for the first time, an EVM wallet will be generated in the background and you will be able to export it whenever you want. With your new VSC Account, you can use it just like any other wallet. In the future, more login methods might be added like BTC and Solana wallets as we see the demand for more options.

Operations such as sending, receiving, and even trading within our DeFi frontend are supported with any of the login methods mentioned. As you can see, compared to Hive Accounts, VSC Accounts have limited types of operations that can be performed at this moment, like any type of DeFi operation. For now, we wanted to give non-Hive users an easy way to start getting familiar with our ecosystem, without having to learn everything about Hive from the beginning. As our ecosystem grows, we will be adding more types of operations, such as posting content or commenting on blog posts.

VSC Accounts are just as secure as the user’s initial sign-in method. This means that as long as you have access to the wallet used to sign in, you will have access to your VSC Account. This removes the need for any sort of custody of keys, or complex account recovery method set up. In simple words, you are in charge of the security of your account. We do not and will not have the custody of your private keys.

# Conclusion

Both Hive Accounts and VSC Accounts have their unique use-cases, and we’re extremely excited to bring this new account-ownership class to life. We aim to cater to all sorts of users, and this is just another way that we are able to offer our services to the world. Whether you want to stick to just trading on a DEX, or you want to use Hive social media apps at the same time, VSC has you covered. Just choose your favorite sign in method and your are ready to get started!

# Only 4 days left until HiveFest!

It is almost that time of the year, when many Hive projects and enthusiasts of the Hive blockchain gather to meet and collaborate. Once a year, HiveFest is held in a different country, allowing people from all over the world a chance to attend. Last year, HiveFest was hosted in beautiful Rosarito, Mexico. This year, HiveFest will be hosted in Split, Croatia, we’re excited to see you there. We just wanted to remind everyone that VSC will be presenting and we are extremely excited to showcase some of what we have been building over the past year.

Since HiveFest 2023, VSC has come to life and is under heavy development. In addition, the team has grown into a powerhouse dead set on radically changing the future of Hive. From nothing more than a idea prior to last year’s HiveFest to a fully funded project making Hive stronger with next generation smart contracts. The support we have seen from the community has been overwhelming, and we cannot properly express our gratitude for those who voted for our proposals in the DHF. While we couldn’t demonstrate a live demo last year due to still being heavily under development, we are ready to show you some of our amazing developments this year.

# So, what’s new?

We would love to share details of what we will be presenting ahead of time, but we want you to witness it first-hand. There’s something incredibly impactful about experiencing new technology in person, and we want to make sure we don’t ruin that. Developing new software is no easy task, as you can imagine, and we’re constantly working to improve what we have built. We’re confident that we will have an incredible demo to present at HiveFest this year. 

We also have a few new team members, super-charging the VSC team with the power it needs to change everything for Hive. Building a project of this caliber is more than just heads-down writing code, of course. This is one of the reasons we decided to start weekly blog posts showing our work, along with educational material related to the blockchain space. We aim to be an educational resource and bring the best-in-class technology of the VSC network to the masses.

# Introduction

VSC is a unique Layer 2 network that offers next generation smart contracts while being upgradeable and highly secure. The VSC team is comprised of a high quality team of engineers and builders with a ferocious aptitude for building revolutionary technology. We are here to build next generation smart contracts for the Hive blockchain and enable the true potential of DeFi on Hive. Our technology will also enable long-term scalability and enable easy onboarding with off-chain accounts. As our mission to propel Hive into the future with smart contracts continues, we are always looking for ways to support the network that brought us here. One way we could do that was by launching a Hive Witness

# The VSC Hive witness is live!

As of August 27th, the VSC witness is online and produced its first block. For those that may not be familiar, a Hive witness helps to produce blocks and validate transactions for the Hive blockchain. This is very important for maintaining the integrity and decentralization of the blockchain. The top 20 witnesses, voted in by Hive Power holders, also determine HBD Savings APR, and a number of other parameters that influence the blockchain.

Hive witnesses support decentralization and protect censorship resistance by signing blocks on Hive. Those are values that VSC stands for, along side our focus on radical innovation that can challenge the status quo. That is why we have decided to fire up our own Hive witness server, further providing support and security to the Hive blockchain. 

## Key pillars of blockchain

**Decentralization** is one of our core values that we hold high while building out our network. We encourage as much decentralization as possible by allowing anyone to operate a VSC node anywhere in the world and making it easy to operate.  Currently we have over 70 nodes around the world and that can easily scale beyond 100, which is the ultimate goal. The more nodes, the more decentralized and secure the network becomes. This ensures that if anything were to happen to a handful of nodes, the networks still operates with no issues. It also prevents the network from being compromised in the event that a central party were to somehow gain control of the majority of nodes.

**Censorship resistance** is another core value of VSC, and we keep it in mind with every development. By design, we do not have the ability to censor the blockchain or any data that goes into it, which we take into consideration with every step we take. No central party is able to alter, block, or restrict information on the network. VSC is open source and able to be easily audited by anyone at any time. With these things in mind, you can always be sure that the VSC network operates with integrity, transparency, and is completely immutable. 

**Innovation** is very important when it comes to pushing Hive forward into the future. We are upgrading its functionality with VSC's hardcore innovation and flexibility. After nearly 8 years in operation, it's time for radical improvement and changes. There hasn't been much progress with smart contracts on Hive, and we are changing that. We are leveraging smart contracts by making them highly composable and customizable for any almost use-case. A great example of those use-cases, would be the DeFi frontend we are working on that will enable our Bitcoin wrapping system, EVM compatibility, and DEX functionalities. Our technology will also aid the development of things like the SPK network, games, NFTs, and may other projects already building on Hive.

# Why the VSC witness is important

The VSC Project is one of the fastest growing and fastest developing projects on Hive to date. We are constantly building and have made a tremendous amount of progress since the project has started. Since it’s inception, the VSC project has built a high quality testnet with working smart contracts and EVM wallet compatibility. We have managed to build an EVM wallet compatible layer which enables direct onboarding of EVM wallet users with zero friction and zero transaction fees. In addition, we are also developing our own Bitcoin wrapping technology and are poised to launch HBD staking on VSC. Our team is actively collaborating with other Hive projects like @v4v.app to showcase the possibilities that our technology brings and to expand the capabilities of all Hive projects.

VSC launches a Hive witness!

# Introduction

The VSC team has been busy cooking up some amazing things the past few weeks. We’ve made great progress toward building out some of the core components of the network as we move forward with our vision. We’re bringing a full-fledged smart contract platform to Hive that will radically change what users can do and build on the blockchain. 

Imagine a future where you can use Hive directly with your metamask wallet.. Oh wait! You don’t have to! In the past few weeks, the team have been heavily testing VSC's native EVM wallet compatibility. This means that any EVM user can own Hive/HBD with by simply pressing a button.

## Why does EVM wallet compatibility matter?

While you might be asking yourself “why does this matter if the entire point is to give them a Hive account”, well yes and no. Not all users will want or need to create a Hive account. Especially for first time users, creating a Hive account is a jarring experience even with some of the best tools. The majority of blockchain users would prefer to use already familiar tools such as metamask. Reducing the friction of onboarding new users is critical in the success of Hive and VSC. 

For non-Hive users coming to VSC, the process is extremely simple. Simply login using your Metamask wallet like any other EVM chain or L2. Compared to needing download Hive Keychain, create a wallet, backup keys and finally setup your wallet, this process is very straight forward and familiar for those within the EVM ecosystem. This happens without the need to create a Hive account at any part of the process. Additionally, sending Hive/HBD to an EVM wallet is trivial.

VSC is creating a better onboarding experience for new users by adding a whole new class of ownership for existing Hive/HBD. In the future, we plan to add the ability for EVM wallet users to create content on Hive as well. Say goodbye to the need for multiple different wallet applications for your every-day needs!

## What about transaction fees?

One of the biggest concerns that users may have with using their EVM wallet is that they may incur transaction fees (gas fees). Of course, no one wants to deal with having to buy a separate token just to pay a transaction fee. This greatly increases the amount of friction when trying to get started with a new platform. Enter VSC.

With our technology, all transactions are gas-free. This means that even though you are using an EVM wallet to send a transaction, you won’t need ETH (or other tokens) to pay for fees. You will just send, sign the transaction, and then those assets are sent to the receiving wallet. This works both ways, as well, so users can easily move funds back and forth from their Hive wallet and EVM wallet. 

While transactions on VSC are gas-free, transactions do require Resource Credits. Resource Credits don’t cost anything, and only require you to have some amount of HBD in your wallet prior to performing a transaction. We recommend checking out our previous post below that explains everything you need to know about Resource Credits on VSC. In the current stage of the VSC network, RCs are not required, but we will enable that requirement in the future.

## Sounds cool on paper… but even cooler on the blockchain!

We are excited to showcase all of this publicly, but even before that our team has been testing VSC transactions using EVM wallets. These are the first-ever transactions between an EVM wallet and a Hive account! We successfully sent HIVE to an EVM wallet, and then sent that HIVE back to a Hive wallet. History has been made.

In this transaction, @vaultec was able to send 10 HIVE straight to an EVM wallet. Currently, this is done with a custom Memo including the EVM wallet address, but our UI is going to handle this part for the user.

After successfully sending HIVE to an EVM wallet, we went ahead and tested the withdrawal function. Here you can see the withdrawal of 1.5 HIVE from VSC that was held in the EVM wallet. How cool is that?!
