Kites can soar for long periods without flapping their wings, which suits their nature perfectly: they're slow and don't like to make unnecessary movements. This has earned them the nickname "lazy predators."
They can hunt small rodents, lizards, fish, nestlings, and eggs, but why bother when you can just steal scraps of food from the trash?

 These birds have a very interesting way of displaying their rank and status. They often decorate their nests with various objects, preferring scraps of white bags. The stronger the birds, the more vibrantly decorated their nests. The more vibrantly decorated a nest is, the more vigorously rival nestmates attack it.

These graceful, sharp-bodied birds emerge in early to mid-May. They nest on sandy and pebble spits and islands in lakes and rivers. They build nests on flat sandy shores or on reed beds.

 It feeds primarily on small fish, and to a lesser extent on insects, aquatic vertebrates, small lizards, and frogs. It hunts in a characteristic manner, regularly hovering in midair during its search flight, diving, and diving into the water completely submerged.

This bird is slightly larger than its closest relative, the chaffinch. In spring, the male has a black head, back, wings, and tail. In autumn, the coloring is brownish. The female is grayish-brown, ochre.
They appear in the forests around my city around early April, and occasionally in late March, depending on the weather. But the strange thing is, they only appear for a short time; after mating season, they fly away. However, in the summer, I see them regularly in the pine forest outside the city.

 These birds can hardly be called good singers; their repertoire consists of short chirps and buzzing songs.
They feed primarily on plant matter, seeds, and berries, but in spring and summer they eat insects.

I encountered a flock of these Pinocchios on a lake at the end of September. They were standing on their long legs in the cold water, resting.

In the flooded meadows outside the city, I constantly see large flocks of seagulls resting on small islands of land in the middle of the water.

These ducks live on the river that runs alongside the city. In the summer, family flocks can be seen resting on the banks and islands.

Come to think of it... I should have wrote in the title *Get the flock IN here* !! Because *Flocks* is this week's [**_SMAP_**](https://peakd.com/hive-106444/@nelinoeva/feathered-friends-show-me-a-1c63d587f7ce) challenge! And what a nice challenge; after all, who doesn't enjoy a good flock? 😏 (I'll stop, I promise!)

Any flock is a nice flock; I do enjoy some more than others, and this one is one of the coolest I can get here:

Why the coolest? Well, because it's a flock you only get in a specific season of the year! Cranes are a migratory species, and they choose the Alentejo region of the country to spend the winter, so you can only see them at that time... and what a sighting it is! The flocks can reach hundreds of individuals, and they are huge birds! Seeing them in flight is amazing, but watching them roam in the typical Alentejo landscape is a close second best.

They do are quite shy, and from my experience they tend to flee as soon as they sense somone getting closer. Here I was using a big zoom and you can see some of them already with spreaded wings ready for takeoff.

These guys are also big, but less shy than the cranes. And seeing a flock of flamingos flying away is also quite the show! Fortunately for me, these ones are residents, and I can see them here all year round.

And in a few observations I could actually get pretty close to them! You do have to be reaaaaly careful and move slowly and quietly, but it pays to be able to see them so near you.

Not a fantastic flock, but one you can get often! Sterlings can appear in small groups or in very large numbers, and near my grandparent's village is common to see them hanging around the electricity poles. Funny that I tend to see them more and more in urban areas nowadays, albeit not in flocks as big as this one.

Leaving one of the most common flocks to wrap it up... recognize these cuties?

Reading the title doesn't count!  But yep, our common seagulls, shilling in a sand dune somewhere in Morocco; It's the same species we commonly see in Portugal. Here, they were all juveniles - you can recognize them quickly due to the lack of smooth colours in the plummage. For now, they are all spotted, and by the third year (if my memory serves me, since different gull species take different times to reach the adult plummage) they will have their adult colours.

Olof Rudbeck junior, Swedish botanist and birdwatcher, mentor to Carl Linnaeus, having discovered the bluethroat in 1695 in Lapland, he gave it the name Avis Carolina in honor of the Swedish king Charles XI and the blue-yellow Swedish flag (in those days the yellow color on the flag was more reddish), and K. Linnaeus in 1758, when the absolute power of the monarchy in Sweden was no longer, considered the name svecica more correct than carolina (Jobling, 2010)

This nightingale, about the size of a sparrow, usually hides deep in bushes and thickets, or on the ground. It tries to remain unseen, but in the spring it deviates from this principle and may sing its mating song demonstratively, especially if other males are nearby.
The presence of open water near bluethroats is no coincidence. This is due not only to their favorite insect hunting grounds but also to their constant need to bathe.

 The blue throat, with a white or rufous spot in the center, is particularly noteworthy. This is a distinctive mark of sorts. Northern and eastern subspecies have a rufous "star," while southern, western, and central Russian males typically have a "white star."

It was nice and sunny this morning as I had a walk around my village lido.  Lots of lovely reflections on the water.

This is Wingy, the Canada goose who has become a celebrity in the village. Wingy has an injured wing due to a disease called angel wing. This condition causes a bird's flight feathers to twist as they grow. The feathers will then point away from the body instead of lying flat. If the disease is caught early, it can be treated. For many wild birds, however, early treatment can be difficult.

Wingy is monitored by a local animal sanctuary who came out to trim its wing to make it more comfortable.  The villagers look out for it but it is quite independent. Such birds normally can't fly but I'm sure someone said Wingy can fly short distances.

We have a young great crested grebe visiting the lido.  It's not very often you see them here so I had to pop down and see it for myself.

The lovely pochard is also coming and going.  It obviously likes it here.

That morning, the home yard felt so calm with a breeze carrying the aroma of dew. From a distance came the sound of a melodious small chirping, then a tiny bird perched on the banks of the yard wall. With a simple but warm golden brown fur, he stood upright, as if he wanted to greet anyone who saw it. His gaze was sharp but friendly, making the atmosphere of the house feel more alive.

The little bird seemed to enjoy the time, occasionally turned to the left and right, as if ensuring the surrounding environment was safe. The agile leg movements showed his activeness, while her tiny body trembled following the wind. Its presence brings a natural nuance that is rarely realized, that beauty does not always come from something big, but from the small things that stop for a while but leave the impression.

Behind its simplicity, the bird is a symbol of a free life. He never asked much, only a small space to rest and fresh air to breathe. From the usual home page, now created a view full of meaning.
