The Fun Uncle

(79)in#story

I remember how popular pranks were when I was a boy in the 1970’s and 80’s. Whenever I got my hands on a comic book I was infinitely more interested in the ads in the back of the book than I was the comic itself. Most of these contraptions didn’t live up to the hype in the ads and would end up being major disappointments.

A typical comic book ad circa 1970s

The film A Christmas Story captures this childhood disappointment at the hands of false advertisement perfectly as Ralphie’s enthusiasm and excitement is deflated shortly after he receives the Little Orphan Annie decoder ring.

As a small boy, I can remember always wanting a joy buzzer which was a device you’d wind up and put in your hand. The idea was it would vibrate and scare bejeezus out of whichever unsuspecting victim you were shaking hands with. The name joy buzzer now makes me wonder if there were other intended uses for the device.

It was a very different world in the 1970s—people weren’t as easily offended. Jokes and pranks permeated just about every corner of our culture back then. There were entire shops dedicated to pranks called Joke Shops or Novelty Shops. My aunt Betty's pranking skills were next level. Her prank of choice was a fake bible that was quite literally shocking. You’d open this book and it would give you an electric shock that felt like the equivalent of a wet hand touching a 110 watt live wire. I’m certain this book would be illegal now.

Back then you had to have thick skin and always be on guard.

My dad, who was a master-pranker in his own right, once spread limburger cheese on the radiator of a co-worker’s car. If you’ve ever caught a whiff of limburger you can only imagine what that smelled like as the car heated up. If you're lucky enought to have never come in contact with this cheese variety yourself just imagine the scent of a restaurant dumpster in blazing, 110 degree sun. This paints an accurate picture for you.

Once in a great while my friends and I would hop on the city bus and ride up to a shop called Yankee Trader which was a novelty store in downtown Columbus. This shop was a parent's nightmare but a pre-adolescent boy’s dream. Yankee Trader carried everything in the comic book ads and more. Looking back, I'm surprised we weren't arrested due to some of the pranks this shop encouraged.

Our society today has changed a great deal and I’m not sure it’s for the better. We no longer joke or prank as we used to for fear of lawsuits and hurt feelings. Much to the dismay of my sisters-in-law down through the years I made a vow, early on, to try to be the “fun uncle” to my nieces and nephews. Over the decades I’ve gifted items like joy buzzers, whoopee cushions, various pranks/magic tricks, as well as the infamous “Pooter Tooter”.

After hearing my nephew Ryan was becoming interested in golf I simply couldn’t restrain myself. I searched “exploding golf balls” and thanks to the interwebs quickly found The Shanker.

Shanker.jpg

When I’m in Ohio for Thanksgiving in a few weeks I’ll be slipping these bad boys into my nephew’s golf bag. With any luck I’ll still be welcome for future holidays. If not, it would be a small price to pay for continuing this storied Walton legacy of pranking. At the very least, hopefully, I’ll be remembered as the “fun uncle”. Perhaps, by some small miracle, they'll continue on with the tradition. One thing is for sure, the world desperately needs more humor.

All for now. Thanks for reading.

Ya'll were definitely bigger pranksters than we were, but my brothers loved the magic shop that sold a lot of these fun items for pranking and had so much fun with them. There were also places at the beach that some fun things could be found.

I was not so much into it as I didn't love being startled, so I tried not to dish it out, so I wouldn't be deserving it back. 😂

I love your post. What a FUN Uncle.

We do all think we are comedians though and not to many subjects are too sacred not to be made fun of.

One little story. Once a number of years ago at a Christmas Party, someone put a whoopie cushion were my Grandmother who was in her 80s was about to sit down. The couch was so soft and she was so light, that it didn't "blow" when she sat on it, but she realized she had sat on something. She got up and when she saw what it was, she picked it up, put it on the coffee table and sat on it there which of course made it work! The whole room was in stitches!....

Thank you! What a fun memory about your grandmother. I really miss some aspects of the "old days" and this would be one of the major ones. We didn't take ourselves quite so seriously.

I sure do miss many aspects of the old days too.

It seems so many are offended by everything, in fact it is like they study every single thing that happens to see if they can find some way to be offended. It's crazy and must be a very unhappy life.

Haha, that is awesome! He is going to be surprised when he takes a swing at that! There used to be a shop up north that had all kinds of stuff like this including magic stuff. It shut down a long time ago, but I remember visiting it when I was in high school. Of course Spencers was always around too, but that was a bit more hit and miss.

I wish I could see it first-hand! The only fly in the ointment is my nephew will be going to an indoor golf center during the colder months. I can't imagine the havoc these would cause indoors so I have to be very careful how I implement this prank, my brother will be my accomplice. : )

Very cool! I remember these shops being everywhere when I was young but Spencers is the closest thing I can think of that are still in existence. There was a great novelty store in Chicago called "Uncle Fun" but it closed in 2014.

That makes a lot of sense that you would want to have your brother in on it so he can kind of stage it for you. I'm sure you can still find a lot of it online, but the physical locations were always quite special.

It was always fun to go into those stores. Sometimes the pop-up halloween shops will carry some of the prank/gag items but usually it's not much.

I remember the store I was talking about before was cool because it was in one of those old school arcades. Not like the video game arcades, but the ones that would run through a city block and had shops on each side of it as you went through the tunnel. I forgot to mention that yesterday. That's part of what made it unique.

Very cool! I remember those arcades. That was probably the precursor to modern shopping malls. I believe there's one in London that was built in the early 1800's.

Wow, that is impressive! There are still a fair number here and there in the US I think. I know of at least three off the top of my head, so I am guessing there are tons more.

I so enjoyed reading this! And yes, you absolutely have to continue - this is one tradition you shouldn't break with. Poor kid though xD I agree - my mum's generation used to tell a lot more jokes than we do now, and just engage in general silliness all around. I remember an interview with an actor I like, about my mum's age, talking about how important it is to keep doing these things - practical jokes, puns, silly voices, weird walks, everything and anything that would keep you young and provide some comedic relief. It's vital (especially these days!). I've tried to stick to that.

Ha the website didn't work for me (though the fact alone that there is such a thing as thepootertooter.com is fantastic), so I googled it.

Used by countless celebrities - best ad for a fart gag ever.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's good to hear someone your age is still living their lives with some comedic relief. As we were growing up there was still so much of the old slap stick humor on television—Three Stooges, Laurel & Hardy, The Little Rascals, Benny Hill, etc. The Pooter Tooter ad is so bad it's great. Lol. This guy has been making these for decades and I think has gotten quite rich off it. His children will be heirs to the Pooter Tooter fortune. : ) Humor can be such a pressure/stress relief, I think it's one of the much needed things that are dwindling away in today's world.

Wow! You and I part company on this one. I'm older than you, but never saw the humor in a prank. You would receive a harsh review from me if you pulled on of those tricks on me. My husband and daughter love pranks. One of their favorite holidays is April Fools Day. There you go...another instance of we are all different. In my house, no one pranks me because they will not like the response. However, they do prank each other and I shake my head ;)))

I bet that was interesting for you living in a house surrounded by pranksters! We used to prank my mom something terrible when we were younger. She'd leave my brother and I in the car to run into stores sometimes and we'd turn on all of the car's accessories (windshield wipers, radio, etc.) so when she'd turn the key it would all come on at once. On another occasion she fell asleep on the couch one winter evening. We shut off all the lights and changed the clocks to read 3am (it was only 9pm or so) and woke her up to tell her she'd slept all night on the couch. She was a very good sport about it all and would end up laughing with us.

Not interesting. Annoying if they bother me with it. As long as they leave me out, I'm OK. Share a house with people, you're not going to like everything they do🌈

I once almost gave my grandmother a heart attack. I don't remember where I got it, but I had this miniature manilla envelope labelled something like "Danger! Snake Eggs!". Inside was basically a rubber band stretched between two metal hooks. The rubber band passed through a washer and you would twist it up so that as you started to open the envelope it would spin creating a loud noise as it whacked against the paper envelope. I pretended I was scared to open it and gave it to my grandmother to open. Not sure why she agreed to open it but it nearly, literally, scared her to death, lol.

I just searched for it and found it online. I guess the classics never go out of style: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D8JB8T3R/ref=sspa_dk_detail_0?sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWw

I remember that gag! I used to have one in the early 90's. That was a very simple one that scared the crap out of people. It was so startling the way it vibrated and made so much noise! Ingenious really.

I'm sure you'd love to be there to see his face, Eric😅 Nowadays, one has to be so careful of offending or upsetting people, as everyone takes themselves so seriously! Actually so sad! I had a fun uncle, and I will never forget the laughs we had together.

I wish there was some way I could see it on video. Maybe my brother will be able to film it somehow. : ) I remember you writing about your uncle! It sounds like he was a wonderful soul. So many of my older relatives had great senses of humor. I really do think it was far more common back then.

We always remember the good times we had when we used to spend a lot of time laughing and joking. But now life is changing a lot with time and there are many occasions where we try but still cannot be happy due to the tension and worries of life. It is good that you remember that time and are laughing remembering it.
