AI: AN ADVANCEMENT MILESTONE

The era of artificial intelligence, like every other advancement milestone that humanity has faced, brings about many disadvantages, sometimes posing a serious threat to labour. What formerly used to be done manually is being replaced by machines and advanced tools that are more efficient than human manual capacity. It is only by going back in history that we might realise that we have been there before, numerous times, and that we are yet to experience even more advanced revolutions.

It is always in the interest of humans to make things easy for themselves, and considering that the major reason behind every invention will certainly not be out of place. Artificial intelligence is no different; it is geared towards making life easy for the human person. But beyond that, it is a revolutionary stage. Just like every other revolutionary stage, it also has the tendency to cause change; replacing what used to be with more advanced ones. Such changes can sometimes bring about displacement in labour, but it is probably for the better.

I prefer to consider AI to be a revolution, the same as the ones that have been faced in former years. It is of course more advanced than the ones that have been; how else would it have been considered better than the ones before? It has obviously come to stay, and it is a good thing regardless of its harmful effects. Good enough that the harmful effects can be overlooked. Come to think of it, at least eighty percent of the world's population must have, in one way or another, benefited from the importance of AI.

Before we consider whether or not we would stop AI if we had the power, do you know that vehicles kill over one thousand five hundred of the world's population every month? As far as I know, AI has never and may never directly kill anyone. It could even be the case that it is less harmful than vehicles, and probably some other results of technological advancements. Considering the fact that advancements always have their bad side, as it is in the case of vehicles, I believe many would choose the advancement that comes along with AI over its harmful effects.

With how far we have come, AI has become part of our everyday life, and it has obviously come to stay. It has no doubt got its bad sides, but it can yet be managed if used rightly. Though I consider that to be very important, the harmful effects of AI for me go beyond the fact that it takes away jobs and devalues labour. Most of its harmful effects are associated with consumers or users. Since it has become part of our daily life, it implies that we are all vulnerable, and we must thus learn to properly manage our use of AI, so as to reduce our chances of becoming victims.

In my opinion, AI is no doubt a good thing, but nothing is absolutely good. AI can therefore be harmful, irrespective of its good parts. The harmful effects of AI are known to many, but knowledge is never enough; actions probably are. Whether you are a user or a developer, you must do everything possible to reduce the risk of you or anyone falling victim to the harmful effects of AI, for your own good and that of humanity. That is probably the least each and everyone of us can do.
