Today I'd like to show you more interesting and beautiful things I saw at the Transylvanian Crafts Festival last weekend and share some interesting stories as well as details about the products I learnt from the crafters themselves.
These events are always the best occasions to try out new techniques and find the answer to any question you may have.
Jewellery is not really my thing, unless it's silver and/or white gold, but looking at them is always a lot of fun. You can see the creativity of the crafter and even if you don't buy any, it's still fun to look at them.
I took some crappy photos here due to the direction of the light, but I hope you can see how beautiful these earrings were.
I don't like wearing a wire around my neck, but this piece was really lovely. The warm orange colors won me over instantly. I didn't buy it as I know I'd never wear it, but really loved it.
These crafters made everything for the fair to look like it should. Even the display was made of wood, old wood actually, to give an old look to the whole thing.
If you were interested in jewellery, you could find a great variety there, all made of natural materials.
These were made of different bones, horns and antlers. Not my kind of jewellery, but I know many are wearing these. This is a special kind of art (all are by the way) as these bones, horns and antlers don't grow on trees, you need to go find them when the animals don't need them anymore and nature makes them fall and this is why this type of jewellery is not cheap.
Speaking of not cheap, here we go again, genuine leather. I know in many countries you don't find genuine leather and when people say leather, they are speaking of so called ecological leather, which has nothing to do with the original and I can't respect it either. These products are durable, I can say you buy them almost for life, especially bags and wallets. One day I'm going to buy a bag at these fairs.
Those sandals were calling my name. I had a pair when I was in my teen years and loved it. Unfortunately my foot problems are stopping me from wearing footwear with slim sole, but I still would love to have one.
Beads can never be missing of any craft fair, especially that some of the folk costumes have bead embroidery on them. Again, it's not my cup of tea, but I have a huge admiration towards those who made these beauties. I made jewellery using very small beads, sand beads we called them, and know how tiring it is for the eye. You need some skills, to handle that extremely slim and fragile needle and also to follow the pattern.
Gingerbread has been invented for fairs, so it's a no brainer to find them at every fair. I bet our European users know what gingerbread hearts look like and are meant for, but for the rest, back in other times, when there were no shops and the only place where supply and demand met, were these fairs and markets, these gingerbread hearts were sold ad presents to take to kids and wives, who usually stayed home.
Today you can find one for every occasion, for the best mom, grandmother, sister, for birthdays, Christmas and whatever occasion is there. This is real art, you need to have some serious skills and I'll show you why.
This lady was painting a gingerbread, if I can call this activity painting. The white thing she's using is egg white with sugar. What she has is a simple, flower shaped gingerbread, but at the table on the previous photo, the lady had way more complicated ones. These beauties are real artworks in my eyes, once you buy them you don't have the heart to eat them.
The other activity you could (probably) see here was egg painting, or egg writing, to be precise.
You have all kinds of eggs on the table, but I'll tell you the process, for those of you who are not familiar with it. On the upper right corner of the photo, you can see the eggshells, which were previously pierced on both ends, in order to remove the egg yolk and the white. After that, the eggshells are washed and dried. Then comes the painting, or the writing, which is done with bee wax. Then the eggshells are placed into the actual paint, that gives them color. It's not an easy process, it takes time and a lot of skills. I tried once and failed miserably, but at least it was fun.
This is it for today. I hope I could show you something new, that you've never seen or heard about. Let me know.
