No, I Do Not Like Knitting!

What the flying bejesus am I doing?

Knitting? Get out. I'm been a knitting refuser all my life. Seriously, when you can buy a scarf for $30 (and I love my scarves) why knit?

But... I have two knit obsessive woman very close to me. My bestie and my daughter in law have been smitten by knittin' (see what I did there?) and I thought if I was to shut them up in ANY way I was going to have to pick up some needles. The mere suggestion of that had my bestie throw needles and balls of wool at me on a recent camping trip.

Oh man, my brain hurts like hell figuring out how to knit two, purl two. The technical language alone had me head scratching with the pointy end of a needle. I thought Slip Knot was a band? But after two hours and restarting four times, I had something resembling the end of a scarf.

And my fingers woke up in the morning itching for yarn.

I am not an addict, I said. I hate fkn knitting. Why would you waste your time sittin' and knittin'? And boyo boyo, those dropped stitches and tangles - what the hell? How do I get myself out of this mess? Thank goodness for the bestie coming to the rescue.

When I told my Mum she her response was quite reasonable. A mixture of shocked and impressed. My DiL was the same. Something a long the lines of 'omfg!!!!'

You see, I had to give it a go for LOVE. If two of my favourite woman were begging me to knit, perhaps I had to pick up the yarn they offered to knot our hearts together a little more, if nothing else 🧶

There's something rather calming about it, I must say. I pick up my phone less. It does have quite the effect on the nervous system. It's meditative. And I can sit and listen to music or a podcast and create something whilst the weather rages outside or there's no surf.

And then there's the excuse it allows - sorry, I can't go get some wood for the fire, shut the front gate or help you in the shed, because I'm in the middle of a row.

But I do not like knitting.

At least I'm never going to admit it.

Same here! I knit a scarf a few years ago, knit two, purl two, and began to loathe it long before it was long enough (see what I did there?). Once it was finally done, a knitting friend of mine told me real knitters hate knitting scarves - they are too boring. I remember enjoying knitting tiny baby sweaters for my babies though. They went fast, and I could choose colors I loved, and there were lots of twists and turns to keep me interested.

Ah that makes sense. My bestie, who knows me too well, said the way my mind works, I'll be racing ahead in my mind to the next thing on mp time. I just can't imagine what that might be yet. It's the repetitive motion that's calming, like rocking or drumming fingers.... My father's mother, my grandmother used to sit in the afternoons and watch her favorite soap operas, read Agatha Christie mysteries and knit at the same time...

Slipknot is a band. One of the people I went to university with now runs a yarn-dying enterprise. Its beautiful stuff, and sells out quick. She just had carpal tunnel surgery done, and has used knitting for years as probably a form of self therapy.

You can get onto planes with those sticks. Don't misuse those powers now that you have them.

Recently, I've been wearing beanies, because its been getting bloody cold, but I will make the assertation that I will never pursue knitting as a homely endeavor. I have absolutely no qualms using a sewing machine, though. I will do that happily, unskillfully, but I'll enjoy the ever-loving shit out of it.

Wow, yarn dying? Has she got a website? I'm obviously knitting with cheap wool blended with acrylic to practice but there's some incredible natural dyes I think. A business like that would do quite well. . im learning knitting never really goes out of trend.

Yeah Mum said she'd rather sew. I bloody loathe sewing machines .. I just get so frustrated!!! What do you sew??

I think a beanie might be next. I don't wear them unless its mega cold, but it's a proper south West Vic uniform in winter and I imagine similar in South Oz.

I have sewn closed a hole in a tshirt, a snood, made my wife a dress (that was the first thing I did, from a pattern) - made myself a "wife beater" singlet out of the most paisley, feminine fabric I could find at spotlight, and I've also sewn a pocket together on a piece of fabric to use as a flag (to limit the spill of light) for photography.

I use beanies mainly to keep my locks in check and as a lazy way to lock moisture into my hair. It also has the added benefit of making me look additionally homeless.

You wouldn't be if you saw the actual garments. The wife beater, sadly, doesn't fit me anymore - for two reasons, 1) I'd never beat my wife, and 2) the gym has caused expansion of my body in some places, and the reduction in others.

And the dress was consigned to the rag pile after she wore it a few times - she chose a very challenging fabric for my first project, and while I was proud, it was bedraggled and seamed (not seemed!) as though it was under the custody of a laudanum addicted misanthrope.

Haha - you are sitting and knitting - so you are not only dropping stitches and tangles but since you are smitten - the g gets dropped too. 😀 It seems as though there is a new wave of knitters - I even know of friends of my daughter's (21-22 years old) doing purls and slip knots and loving it.
