Hello! My name is Belén and I am currently a nomad. I work in a hotel and live in staff accommodation. I am in Ibiza, an island in Spain that suffers heavy rains and flooding during September.

Today I spent the day helping to clean up the hotel where I work, as it suffered terrible flooding two days ago. To understand this day, I need to give you a little context.

Hoy me he dedicado a ayudar a limpiar el hotel en donde trabajo, ya que sufrió una terrible inundación hace dos días. Para que entiendan este día, es necesario que los ponga un poco en contexto.

Last Monday night in Ibiza, it started to rain. It was September 29, and rain had been forecast. What hadn't been forecast was its intensity.

It didn't stop raining until the early hours of the morning, around 6 or 7 a.m., but at 10 a.m. it started raining again, each time with greater intensity, each time more violently. At times it seemed like it was going to stop, but no, the rain continued. It rained nonstop until 7 p.m., and by that time my workplace was completely flooded.

When I say flooded, I mean that you really couldn't even walk.

I had to cover the part of the hostel that wasn't flooded, attending to the guests, who didn't understand what was happening. My colleague couldn't get there because of the state of the streets, and my boss and the intern went to help remove water from the flooded part of the hotel.

At around 4:30 p.m., the evacuation of guests from that area to the part that was in good condition and to other hotels began. However, although the evacuation was inevitable, taxis couldn't get to the door to pick people up, so guests had to walk through the water to leave the hotel.

In addition, many had flights that were not canceled, but private and public transportation services were, so people missed their flights because there was no way to get to the airport.

This was on Tuesday, when I was unable to take photos, only a few seconds of video, because it was nonstop work and on top of that I was doing double duty. El pasado lunes por la noche en Ibiza empezó a llover. Era 29 de Septiembre y la lluvia estaba pronosticada. Lo que no estaba pronosticado era su intensidad.

No dejó de llover sino hasta primeras horas de la mañana, 6 o 7 am, pero a las 10:00 hs empezó nuevamente a caer agua, cada vez con más intensidad, cada vez de manera más violenta. Por momentos parecía que iba a parar, pero no, la lluvia seguía. Llovió sin descanso hasta las 19:00, y para esa hora mi trabajo ya estaba todo inundado.

Cuando digo inundado me refiero a que realmente no se podía ni caminar.

Yo tuve que cubrir en la parte del hostal que no estaba inundada atendiendo a los huéspedes, que no entendían qué estaba pasando. Mi compañera no pudo llegar por el estado de las calles y mi jefa y el becario se fueron a ayudar a sacar agua de la parte del hotel inundada.

Sobre las 16:30 empezó la evacuación de huéspedes de ese sector al que estaba en buenas condiciones y a otros hoteles. Sin embargo, aunque la evacuación era inevitable, los taxis no llegaban hasta la puerta para llevarse a la gente, por lo que los huéspedes tuvieron que caminar por el agua para salir del hotel.

Además muchos tenían vuelos, que no fueron cancelados, pero sí el servicio de traslados privados y públicos, por lo que las personas perdieron los vuelos, ya que no hubo manera de llegar al aeropuerto.

Esto fue el día martes, momento en el que no pude tomar fotos, solo un video de pocos segundos, porque fue un no parar y encima haciendo doble turno.

The pool was indistinguishable due to the amount of water, the sun loungers were submerged, and the staff area and trash can area were completely flooded. Some cars had crashed into each other and others had been displaced by the rising water.

What happened was that we are in an area of the island that is in a depression, and the rain was so heavy that Ibiza has asked the Spanish government to declare it a disaster area due to the damage suffered by public and private infrastructure.

El segundo día intenté salir del área del hotel pero para hacerlo, también tenía que pasar por el agua y me tocaba empezar a trabajar al mediodía, por lo que no logré salir.

Fue un caos total aquel día, ya que todo estaba por completo inundado, peor que el mismo día de la lluvia.

La piscina no alcanzaba a diferenciarse por la cantidad de agua, las reposeras hundidas, la zona de personal y el área de los botes de basura, por completo inundadas.

Habían autos chocados unos con otros y otros habían sido desplazados por la misma crecida del agua.

Pues lo que ha pasado es que estamos en una zona de la isla que está en una depresión y la lluvia fue demasiado fuerte, tanto, que Ibiza ha solicitado al estado español la declaración de zona catastrófica por los daños sufridos en infraestructura pública y privada.

On day three, today, I asked my boss if she would please allow me to join my colleague in cleaning and recovery tasks as soon as she arrived, because since the storm began, all I had done was go from my room to my desk, and I couldn't take it anymore mentally. Fortunately, she said yes, so for the first time I was able to see the flooded part of the hotel.

The storm was on Tuesday, and the photos you see with sunshine are from Thursday. Everything was still like that, but at least they had managed to remove the water from the hotel lobby.

I helped remove mud, more water, and move furniture that had been stuck due to the swelling caused by the water.

El día tres, hoy, le pedí por favor a mi jefa que en cuanto llegara mi compañera me permitiera sumarme con ella para tareas de limpieza y recuperación, pues desde el inicio de la tormenta, todo lo que yo había hecho era ir de la habitación al escritorio y no daba más mentalmente. Me dijo que sí afortunadamente, por lo que por primera vez pude ver la parte inundada del hotel.

La tormenta fue un martes y las fotos que ya ven con sol, son del día jueves. Todavía estaba todo así, pero al menos habían logrado sacar el agua del lobby del hotel.

Ayudé a sacar barro, más agua y a mover muebles atorados por la misma hinchazón provocada por el agua.

Fortunately, on the evening of the second day, the UME (Military Emergency Unit) arrived and has been helping to remove the water with the appropriate machinery ever since. But even they, after almost three days of work, have not managed to remove it all.

The good news is that there were no human casualties, and we are all fine. This situation reminded me of the Titanic, only without being a catastrophe like that. The thing is, this is a hotel, a good hotel, a private hotel, and... it's amazing how we don't know how or when.

While the rest of the island recovered fairly quickly, there were exceptions, such as us, who were left isolated on the same island.

El día dos por la noche afortunadamente llegó la UME (Unidad Militar de Emergencias), que desde ese momento está ayudando a retirar el agua con maquinaria adecuada. Pero ni ellos, tras casi 3 días de trabajo, han logrado quitar todo.

Lo bueno es que no hubo daños humanos, y que estamos bien.

Esta situación me recordó al Titanic, solo que sin ser una catástrofe como esa. El tema es que se trata de un hotel, un buen hotel, privado, y… es impresionante cómo no sabemos cómo ni cuándo.

Mientras el resto de la isla se recuperó bastante pronto, hubo excepciones, como nosotros, que quedamos aislados en la misma isla.
