Landscapes - Cacela Velha / Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

Returning to Cacela Velha is like reconnecting with an old friend you haven't seen in a while, but with whom conversation flows as if it were yesterday. This small town, in southern Portugal, almost touching the sea, isn't one of those places you easily forget. At least, it's not like that for me. The first time I came here, I fell in love. Back then, I felt like I had discovered a well-kept secret of the Algarve, one of those places where time seems to have a kind of pact with calm. Therefore, returning to Cacela Velha, now in the middle of summer, was a long-awaited return, a reunion with nature and a landscape that, I confess, just thinking about it calms me.

The town is perched on a hill, overlooking the Ria Formosa and the Atlantic, and this scenery is pure poetry. Beauty lies in the simplicity of everything we find here. White houses, terracotta roofs, narrow streets that seem to defy time, and from the top of the walls, the view of the nearly untouched beaches stretching below. But Cacela Velha isn't just about landscapes. It has a rich history worth exploring, even if we wander here more for the feeling than the historical accuracy. Founded by the Moors, this town was a strategic outpost for centuries, protecting the Algarve coast against invasions and invaders. After the Portuguese reconquest, it maintained its rustic charm, far from the hustle and bustle of the larger tourist centers.

Passing through here is like taking a trip back in time. Not only for the architecture and the castle that still watches over the horizon, but also for the calm that seems to have been instilled in every stone. I wonder what it would have been like to live here hundreds of years ago, when people depended on the sea for their survival, but also needed to preserve the quiet of their nights. Could it be that, back then, they felt the same peace I feel now, watching the sunset? And speaking of which, there's nothing like standing here watching it slowly disappear behind the sea, tinting the sky with colors that only nature can paint. It's one of those moments that makes me think about how fast we live life, always rushing, and that we should stop more often to simply be. To be present, as the mindfulness people say.

PT

Cacela Velha, at its core, is this. It's an invitation to pause, to contemplate, to discover the beauty in simple things. If I could give one piece of advice to anyone who wants to come here, it would be to put aside the clock, walk the streets slowly, listen to the sound of the sea in the distance, and realize that sometimes the best plan is to have no plan at all.

PT

Returning to this place was, for me, more than a visit. It was a brief meditation in the open air, a reconnection with the essence of the Algarve that I love so much. Genuine, peaceful, and full of stories to tell. The best trips are those that make us feel at home, even when we're far away. I hadn't been to the Algarve for many, many years. It was a mix of emotions, but I left feeling very happy. I had new memories with my little family.
