MECHANIZED AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY: A RoadMap For Food Security And Sustainablility In The Society

For this prompt we invite you to share with us. What is your view on agriculture? Have you ever participated in agriculture and would you love to do so? Do you think mechanized agriculture has advantages and disadvantages? If you had an opportunity to create an app that connects you directly with the farmers, if you can what would you want the app to do and what would you name it.

Embedded Image Source from Pixabay I grew up in a very remote locality in the Eastern part of my country with my parents. There, Agriculture thrives very well. The name Agriculture has been as old as the name sounds. I grew up with my industrious mother, who was complementing her teaching work with sewing and farming.

Weekends and on public holidays, she would take all of us to her many plots of farm where she recruits farmers to farm for her at a cost, and she pays them. After making the ridges for her, the rest of the farming process is always done by us. We plant the maize, okra, fruit pumpkin, yams, Cassava, and a whole lot of other items. My late mum also has a barn where she saves all the farm products. There, she separates the one for consumption and those for the next planting season.

So, from my point of view, agriculture is not about planting, but about how to make it a continuous process, to bridge the gap between demand and supply of food in society. It also serves the teeming and growing population of our dear country, the Giant of Africa. However, findings have confirmed that Agriculture has witnessed little growth and therefore needs more attention from those in authority for better drive, development, and sustainability.

Its advantages include increased farm yield and efficiency, better packaged products, saving time, and the ability to manage acres of land seamlessly with reduced human error.

The disadvantages include the high cost of farm products. This is as a result of the direct and overhead costs of using the machines for farming, which contribute to the loss of jobs in rural areas, causing those farmers to abandon farming in search of greener pastures in the urban areas. Sometimes the use of fertilizers and other chemicalized products for mechanised farming reduces the quality of farm products. Just as a garage is a place to park vehicles, this one will be an app for farmers to showcase their products, while providing easy connectivity to direct buyers. Again, it will serve as a meeting point for all farmers of other farm products in different categories.

Furthermore, it will give farmers a voice in society and provide a link for them to sell their products to direct buyers at a reduced cost and without stress. This way, farmers can become more creative; they can even deploy home delivery services, making farming very attractive.

Some used to say that agriculture is meant for old people, but since the introduction of technology and mechanisation, young people are delving into agriculture, and more will do that if the government can make it more attractive. In the end, it will be a win-win situation for everybody where preparedness meets success with sustainability as its backbone.

But even if farmers are able to access the app, what about illiteracy barrier, how many farmers in Isolated villages can read and write?

Let say some farmers are able to operate the app and able to showcase their farm produce and connect with people, what about the cost of logistics? These farmers still needs to find ways to send their harvest to their buyers or will the buyers go to the villages to pick it up themselves? Does that mean that someone who wants to purchase just one yam from a farmer on the app, have to travel miles to pick it up?

At the long run the cost of deliveries will still end up frustrating the farmers and buyers.

Actually, you make sense with your objectives.

Cost of logistics is even covered in the first place, because these farmers always take those products to a market square where they sell it off to either middle men or retailers. The app will bridge that gap giving them access to direct buyers whether retailers or suppliers. That way the mark up done by these middle men is cut off while the direct buyers enjoy those products. Secondly, the issue of buyers picking one will not actually come to play because the app will address the issue of those that want to pick one. There will be pick up places for those to walk in, pick and pay for their products. On the other hand, the bulky buyers too will have some benefits for buying in bulk.

Just like Jumia and other online platforms has managed business, I don't think this one will be an exception.

The most important things is to start, once the app starts running, adjustments will be made on daily bases just like every other banking or ordering app.

I think we can, I also see possibilities in such actions.

Hummm, I hope somebody is not test running a business strategy with this prompt @sciFiMultiverse

Agriculture is meant for all especially seeing how much people are making from agricultural activities.

Yesooo, it is wake up call. In my country the Northerners are more into agriculture whether the manual or mechanised form of agriculture.

Other regions are doing well but need to do more. Those in authority can also do better by allocating more funds towards boosting Agriculture and its sustainability in the country.
