Thirteen days ago, I shared a post pointing out that Galatasaray had been performing poorly in European competitions for years because they had conceded five goals to a team like Frankfurt. Today, however, I titled it “What a Win!” because Galatasaray managed to beat Liverpool at home. Let's talk a bit about this match today; I hope @phortun likes this one as much as the previous post :)
The Champions League is a whole different level of excitement. While the derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe is Turkey's most important match, believe me, the Champions League excites me more. Even beating a very poor team in the Champions League is more enjoyable than beating Fenerbahçe because it's on a different level. In the Turkish league, these two teams face each other at least twice a year, but you don't get to go to the Champions League every year, and even when you do, there's no guarantee of success. That's why I watch every match there more carefully. Yesterday, I was bursting with adrenaline just before the Liverpool match started, and that adrenaline kept rising from the moment the match began.
I didn't expect them to win before the match; all I wanted was for Galatasaray to play enjoyable football and fight hard. The whistle blew, and Galatasaray started the match well. We had a clear chance as early as the 3rd minute, but Barış Alper Yılmaz couldn't capitalize on it. In the 14th minute, Liverpool launched an attack, and that was the turning point of the match. Liverpool failed to capitalize on a very clear opportunity, and then Galatasaray launched a very well-executed counterattack and won a penalty thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai's ridiculous intervention. My heart was pounding at that moment because a penalty means an 80% chance of a goal. Osimhen stepped up to take the penalty and didn't miss. Galatasaray took a 1-0 lead. That alone was amazing. The first half was fiercely contested. Every player gave 100%, and the first half ended 1-0. I was watching the game with my wife, and I told her that all I wanted was for the first half to end like this.
The second half began, and between the 60th and 70th minutes, Victor Osimhen failed to capitalize on two clear chances. As the minutes ticked by, my anxiety grew because 1-0 is a very dangerous score. We're talking about Liverpool, friends; they can score at any moment and then another one right after. Galatasaray is a team whose concentration can easily slip, and there are only a few teams in the world that can exploit that as well as Liverpool. In the 88th minute, the referee awarded a penalty to Liverpool for a challenge in the penalty area, but it was the wrong decision. Thankfully, VAR was there, and after review, the penalty was overturned. Technology is an amazing thing.
The final minutes were completely dominated by Liverpool, but Galatasaray defended superbly and managed to win the match. Man, this is incredible. Galatasaray managed to beat the reigning Premier League champions, this year's biggest favorites in the Champions League, and did so without conceding a goal. Let me share a piece of information I heard from the commentator during the match. Liverpool's last match without scoring a goal was 6-7 months ago. For 7 months, no one has defended their goal so well against Liverpool. We need to give a shout-out to our goalkeeper Uğurcan here. When he was transferred for around 30 million euros, everyone, including me, thought it was too expensive, but he proves in every match how good he is and that he's worth every penny.
As for the other players, Ismail Jacobs had an excellent game. I haven't seen such a good full-back performance in a long time. He cleared one ball off the line and didn't give the opposing wingers any breathing room. Our other full-back, Singo, was also tremendous. He was transferred to Galatasaray to make a difference in these matches, and he proved it with his performance. He also made an incredible assist in the previous match. Victor Osimhen is, in my opinion, one of the top 5 strikers in the world, and it's heartwarming to see how committed he is to Galatasaray. In his post-match interview, he said he plays for the best team in the world. During the match, he did his best in every duel, stole the ball several times, and got into position. He couldn't capitalize, but that's okay; he created many of those positions himself. I don't think we could have won if Icardi had played in this match.
Moving on to midfield, Torreira, Lemina, and İlkay Gündoğan played very well as a trio. İlkay led the team with his experience. He kept the ball very well and never lost it, and his passes created every opportunity for Galatasaray. Lemina made the right interventions at crucial moments. Torreira, on the other hand, is an amazing player who does all of these things. His passes are fantastic, his pressing power is incredible, and he has incredible composure. Even in very difficult situations, he always found the right passing options. Instead of clearing the ball, he cleverly allowed us to launch counterattacks.
The wings were also outstanding in this match. Barış Alper Yılmaz once again proved how much of a difference he can make in athletics. Yunus also showed how intelligent a player he is and how precisely he can deliver through balls when needed. In a few years, he will be much more experienced and may even become the team's brain.
Head coach Okan Buruk also made his mark in this match, outmaneuvering Arne Slot tactically. We saw that even the world's best players, including Salah, couldn't get into position, and all of this is a credit to the technical staff. With his player selections, formation, tactical pressure, and well-planned attacking strategies, he may have achieved the most important victory of his coaching career. If he maintains this performance for a few more matches, he will also catch the attention of foreign teams.

Şampiyonlar ligi bambaşka bir heyecan, Galatasaray ile Fenerbahçe arasında oynanan derbi Türkiye'nin en önemli maçı olsa da inanın Şampiyonlar ligi beni daha çok heyecanlandırıyor. Şampiyonlar liginde çok kötü bir takımı yenmek bile Fenerbahçe'yi yenmekten daha çok keyif veriyor çünkü orası başka bir seviye, Türkiye liginde her yıl en az iki defa bu iki takım karşılaşıyor ama Şampiyonlar ligine her yıl gidemiyorsunuz ve gittiğinizde de başarılı olacağınızın bir garantisi yok. Bu yüzden oradaki her maçı daha dikkatli izliyorum. Dün de Liverpool maçı başlamadan hemen önce adrenalinle dolup taşıyordum ve maç başladığı andan itibaren bu adrenalin artmaya devam etti.
Maçtan önce kazanmak gibi bir beklentim yoktu, tek istediğim Galatasaray'ın keyif veren bir futbol oynamasıydı ve mücadele etmesiydi. Düdük çaldı ve Galatasaray maça iyi başladı. Henüz 3. dakikada net bir pozisyon bulduk ama Barış Alper Yılmaz bu pozisyonu değerlendiremedi. 14. dakikada Liverpool bir atak yaptı ve maçın kırılma noktası o oldu. Bir tane topu çizgiden çıkardı, rakip kanat oyuncularına hiç nefes aldırmadı. Diğer bek oyuncumuz Singo da muazzamdı. Orta sahaya geçelim, Torreira, Lemina ve İlkay Gündoğan üçlü halinde çok iyi maç çıkardılar. İlkay tecrübesiyle takımı yönlendirdi. Hem çok iyi top sakladı ve hiç kaybetmedi hem de paslarıyla Galatasaray'ın içinde olduğu her pozisyonu yaratan oyunculardandı. Lemina çok kritik anlarda doğru müdahaleler yaptı. Torreira ise bunların hepsini birden yapan muazzam bir oyuncu. Hem pasları harika, hem pres gücü inanılmaz hem de soğukkanlılığı. Çok zor pozisyonlarda bile hep doğru pas opsiyonları buldu. Topu uzaklaştırmak yerine akıllıca kontra atağa çıkmamızı sağladı.
Kanatlar da bu maç mükemmellerdi. Barış Alper Yılmaz, atletizm konusunda ne kadar büyük fark yaratabildiğini bir kere daha ispatladı. Yunus da ne kadar zeki bir oyuncu olduğunu ve yeri geldiğinde ara pasları ne kadar milimetrik atabildiğini gösterdi. Birkaç yıl sonra çok daha tecrübeli olacak ve belki de takımın beyni olacak.
Teknik direktör Okan Buruk da bu maç farkını ortaya koydu ve taktiksel anlamda Arne Slot'a üstünlük sağladı. Salah dahil dünyanın en iyi oyuncularının pozisyona dahi giremediğini gördük ve bunların hepsi teknik ekibin bir başarısıdır. Oyuncu tercihleri, dizilişi, taktiksel presi ve çizilmiş hücum planlarıyla belki de teknik direktörlük kariyerinin en önemli zaferini kazandı. Birkaç maç daha bu performansı sürdürürse yurt dışındaki takımların da dikkatini çekecektir.
