This summer I went to England to take classes at Cambridge University. I flew into London and spent a few days there. Then I went to Much Hadham.

Where is Much Hadham...you ask? It is in between London and Cambridge.

Why would I want to go to a small village (about 2,000 people as of 2011, probably still that population) north of London? Because it is close to Perry Green and that is where Henry Moore house and garden is located.

On Friday nights, in the summer, a fish and chips truck comes to the village. 

Of course, I had to get some. It was parked next to the Londis grocery store, which has the post office inside and the grocery store is across the street from the fire station and next to the church.

Share Our World: Quaint Much Hadham, England

I am so excited to share some highlights of the National Gallery of Art in London. When I knew I was going to be in England this summer the National Gallery was first on my list of places to visit.

The National Gallery in London is the first museum that I remember going to and really enjoying and that 27 years ago, so I was very excited to go back. Wow, it has some wonderful art. 

#### The Wilton Dyptch

This is an incredible personal portable religious devotional piece for King Richard II made in the late 1300s. Can you believe that? It is over 600 years old.

It is a gorgeous example of medieval painting. Look at all that gold leaf and blue. Amazing.

The diptych means that it is two sided. And this piece has paintings on the outside and the inside. The inside has preserved much better.  The white hart (deer) is King Richard's symbol or emblem.

King Richard is shown kneeling before Mary and the Christ child. Standing behind him are John the Baptist, King Edward the Confessor (you can tell because of the ring) and Edmund the Martyr (with his arrow). 

The tooling of the gold leaf is really stunning.

Wow, as I was watching this video I started crying. I feel so blessed to be able to see this incredible piece of art in person and to go to Westminster and learn more about King Richard II and Edward the Confessor. It is such a beautiful symbol of devotion to Jesus Christ.

#### The Ambassadors
I was so excited to see this painting in person. The level of detail is incredible and I wanted to see the skull or Memento Mori too.

Memento Mori is a symbol of death put in art work like paintings to remind the viewer that they too will die.

The level of detail is gorgeous! It is said the song in the book is written with such precision that someone could play it.

I sat in front of this painting for about an hour and looked at it slowly and watched people from all over the world interact with it too.

#### The Arnolfini Portrait

I was so incredibly excited to see this painting. Wow, Jan van Eyck is incredible. How does one paint in such find detail? I do not understand and maybe that is why I am in even more awe. 

There is so much symbolism too. Maybe I will do a post on this picture alone. I could do it on all the pictures I am highlighting in this post. They are incredible.

I am so glad that I went to the gallery two days, once on a Wednesday and once on a Saturday. The crowd to see this painting on a Saturday in August too much.

The Hay Wain is one of the first pictures I memorized for class and then saw in person. To help me memorize it I imagined a constable on the shore of the river and he is calling out to the man in the cart "Hey Wayne!" Pretty brilliant, right? When I saw it for the first time in person in 1998 I was so excited.

In addition to painting The Hay Wain being the first painting I memorized I have also seen so many Constable paintings of Salisbury Cathedral. It was a dream of mine to go to Salisbury and see it in person. I did and it was amazing!

I was excited to go back and see this painting. There is a walk way with Constable on one side and Turner on the other. What a set up for these two great rivals of British painting.

#### Rain, Steam and Speed- The Great Western Railway

I was surprised by the impact that seeing Turner's paintings had on me when I was able to stand so close to them. I was amazed, enveloped and moved to tears. He really is an incredible artist. 

I was introduced to this painting when my friend Katherine wrote a paper for her Cambridge class on it. I was so excited to be able to travel across southern England on the train. Turner showed the modernity, the interaction of nature (rain) and the invention (train), he also shows us the scale of this new form of transportation compared to the boat in the picture. When you allow yourself to look at this piece slowly it really is stunning.

**Restaurant Review: Ochre at the National Gallery of Art, London (5/10)**

I was so excited to have afternoon tea at the National Gallery of Art. I was deciding between a few places to have afternoon tea and because of my affinity to the museum I chose it. I am so sad to give it such a low rating.

#### Location
The Ochre restaurant is located in the National Gallery of Art which is in Trafalgar square- a very popular tourist location in London. Having the restaurant in a Neoclassical building constructed in 1831 was a wonderful treat.

#### Atmosphere
The restaurant was beautiful, unfortunately when I was arriving for my reservation one of the staff asked a lady to have a seat. She declined and he said to her that she should sit and pointed to a chair and said it doesn't look good for the restaurant to have her standing at the entrance. That was my first encounter with the restaurant and I questioned my choice to come to this restaurant if people standing at the entrance are asked to move aside.

#### Price
It was quite expensive. I was willing to pay for the afternoon tea experience in London. I think that it could have been better for the price. For one person, which I had to email and make a special request- it was £77 which was $83.84. It was so much food that I didn't have dinner that night. :) Oh and the tea and sandwhiches are refillable. 


#### Staff
As I mentioned above the person that was so rude to the lady as I was coming in set a tone that was hard to shake. I was sat in the back corner and am not sure if they wanted to give me space or they basically forgot about me. The staff that helped me was fine and did their job. There was nothing extraordinary or special about the service I received and at times it was lacking. I waited a while to get their attention at times. 


#### Taste
The taste was good, it filled me up. I prefer peppermint tea over Chamomile tea. And Scones and clotted cream with jam were to be my favorite thing to eat on this trip to England. The deserts especially were very photogenic.

Would I go back? I don't know. I think it would be a different experience with another person or group of people. I also hope that the arrogant man at the entrance was having a rough day and doesn't usually treat people that way. I adore the National Gallery of Art and can't wait to go back. It will remain to be seen if the right circumstances present themselves if I will return to the Ochre restaurant.

Restaurant Review: Afternoon Tea at Ochre

When I posted about the [Tate Britain](https://peakd.com/hive-126773/@sjarvie5/art-talk-tate-britain) @holoz0r told me how much he likes the Pre Raphaelites. While in England I took four classes at Cambridge and one was called Painting the City: 19th- century London and we studied a little about the Pre Raphaelites. 

London in 1848 was industrial with factories, pollution, telegraph (1840s), Colonial Trade and concerns about the water supply. This is the environment in which the Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood started at 83 Gower Street in London and lasted for 5 years, until 1853.

The 3 main artists are Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt. They were in their early 20s and wanted to push back at how art was taught and made. They decided to take inspiration from artist before Raphael or before the Renaissance, a time when painting was more individual and detailed. Think Van Eyck. They painted stories from the Bible, Shakespeare and medieval poetry with real people and places. 


#### John Everett Millais
One of the most famous paintings at the Tate Britain and of the Pre Raphaelites is Ophelia. It is a picture of a scene of Shakespeare's play Hamlet. We learned that the model laid in a bathtub in the dress so Millias could get the exact feeling. Millais also went on location and painted the plants and they are so precise that they can easily be identified.

This painting was met with a lot of criticism for showing the body of Joseph in such a realistic way, with long muscled arms with tan lines. Also Mary with red hair which is associated with Mary Magdalene and prostitution. 

The group of artists was wanting to paint individualism vs idealized beauty. There is also a lot of symbolism in their pictures, including this one. The sheep representing Christ as the lamb of God or even as the good shepherd. The wood of the cross. Mary is consoling the young Joseph because he got hurt in the palm of his hand.

#### William Holman Hunt

I chose this picture by Hunt because I was going to be going to the coast of England later in the trip. The plague for the picture indicates:
 
> This work is one of the first Pre-Raphaelite pictures to be created outside in open air, rather than in a studio. Hunt took nearly 5 months to paint it.

I am very drawn to Annunciation pictures. This is a very interesting one, it has a lot of the usual symbolism with the halos, flowers, and white. 

There are also some striking differences, like the look and body language of Mary crouching in on her bed. 

I also learned that the artist's sister Christina was a poet and is the model for Mary.

#### John William Waterhouse

The Lady of Shallot is a beautiful work by John William Waterhouse. He was baptized the year after the pre Raphaelite Brotherhood was formed. So while not in the initial group he did embrace their style and subject.

The details in this painting are incredible. Especially the tapestry and candles. It is a picture of a 19th century poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson.

She has such a cute style. I enjoyed the videos and want to make some of the recipes and read some of the books. It also got me thinking....

When I think of Autumn art this is one of the first that comes to mind. This is an incredible stained glass window that I go to every time I go to the MET. I get lost in this fall scene with this gorgeous colors and light.

This is another amazing fall scene called Autumn on the Hudson River. It is a very large painting 200.7 x 321.3 x 21 cm (79 x 126 1/2 x 8 1/4 in.) made by Cropsey. Cropsey was part of the Hudson River School. They are a group of romantic (late 18th to mid-19th century) painters that painted incredible landscapes like this.

I took this picture when I went to Utah in April. It is a touching moment between two girls as they sit on this wall on a lovely fall day. 

I don't know much about Daniel Ridgway Knight so I looked him up. He was born in America and studied art in France. He painted peasant women in the late 1800s. 

He was also an Olympic sailor. How fun is that? 

I was drawn to this picture for the friendship, tenderness, colors and light.

#### Ceilings 
Wow the ceilings in Westminster Abbey are incredible. Especially in the Lady Chapel. Which is the one you see below. It has a stunning fan-vaulted ceiling.

I was amazed at the beauty of the fan-vaulted ceiling here in Westminster and I also got to see the largest fan vault in the world at **King's College Chapel Cambridge** when I went to Cambridge. 

Fan vaulting is used in Gothic architecture in England. The earliest example is from Gloucester in 1351.

#### Cellarium Cafe and Terrace

I started my day with breakfast at the Cellarium Cafe and Terrace. This restaurant is located at the end of the west cloister. It was so cool to eat in this medieval room. 

The restaurant is open from 8am-4pm. I got a nice simple breakfast of eggs and toast for around $11 USD.

As a tourist we enter the North door under the Rose Window. Admission costs $40.67 (£31) for adults and I also purchased a Verger Tour for ($13.40) £10 more. This tour was totally worth it!

### Stained Glass

There is beautiful stained glass windows from 1700s- to the present. The window on the left is the new Queen's window and was made by David Hockney in 2018. It is really quite different than all the other windows in the abbey.

#### College Garden

Here is a screenshot of Google maps of Westminster Abbey. You can see the layout of the abbey, the Cellarium Cafe and Terrace where I ate breakfast and the Lady Chapel closest to Abingdon St. 

At the bottom past the cloisters is the College Garden. Google maps has a little note that says "hidden garden for over 900 years". I loved this garden. It was beautiful and peaceful and most of the tourist were in the main building while I enjoyed the garden before my Verger Tour.

### Cloisters

#### Paintings
There are some wonderful paintings in Westminster Abbey. These two are made in the Byzantine style by Sergei Federov and installed in 1994.

This is a picture of King Richard II and was painted around 1395. Richard died in 1400 and his tomb and many other monarchs are buried in the abbey. 

Seeing this painting of Richard II was especially interesting and exciting to me. Later that day I saw the Wilton Diptych at the National Gallery of Art which was a private religious piece for King Richard II and was made in 1395-1399. Amazing!

I also got to see Richard II tomb. There were no pictures allowed on that part of the tour. It was very special since I have studied the Wilton Diptych so much.

Westminster Abbey is 32,000 square feet (3,000 m2) so these are only a few of the highlights. It is a place I would go back to again, for sure. I would like to spend a lot more time there.

**Restaurant Review: Fuller Ale and Pie (5/10)**

Fuller Ale and Pie is the first  restaurant I went to in England and so it will be my first review too.

#### Location
If you are staying in the Earl's court area, as I was. This pub is located a coinvent 5 minute walk to the Earl's court station.

#### Atmosphere
The restaurant had a great pub feel. I think I only gave it a one cause it was a little awkward sitting alone with all the families and groups surrounding me. 

#### Price
I ordered the London Pride Steak and Ale Pie with chips for £19.95 which came to $26.87 USD. That is pretty good price for a meal in London. 

I chose the pie because the menu said, 
> Pie and mash is London's original fast food. A traditional British meal popularized in the eastern docklands areas of the capital during the Victorian era. Traditionally a working-class food, the pastry crust protects worker's meals from the dirt and grime of historic London." 

#### Taste
The steak pie was pretty good. A nice meal to nourish me till morning. 

I wanted to taste a bit of historic London!
#### Staff
The staff seated me quickly and brought my food in a good amount of time. They did their job and that is good. 

This restaurant was a nice experience. There are many other places to eat in Earl's court and given the opportunity I would choose a different restaurant instead of going back to this one.

#### Henry Moore
I have been a long time fan of Henry Moore. In 2008, I became a serious fan and travel from Arizona to New York City to attend a Henry Moore show at the New York Botanical Garden. Over the years I have seen his sculptures in many cities that I have visited, especially DC. This summer, while in England, I got to see the extensive collection of Henry Moore art at the [Tate Britain](https://peakd.com/hive-126773/@sjarvie5/art-talk-tate-britain) and at the Henry Moore's Estate in Hertfordshire. That was a dream come true.... and another post (s). 

Henry Moore was born in 1889 in Yorkshire, England. He went to art school at the same time as Barbara Hepworth, another English sculptor I really like. He was married to Irina and had one daughter, Mary. He moved to Hertfordshire and lived and worked until he died in 1986.  

Below are five stunning pieces that Henry Moore made in the 1950s and 1960s, that I saw at the Tate Britain.

I was so excited to see this piece in person. Especially after watching this Smarthistory video.

I was able to see the lines and the eyes, and the unique hands and feet and the two breasts. It is a fascinating piece. One of the things I like best about sculpture is the ability to walk around it and see it from different angles, it is like seeing a whole different piece.

This piece is the plaster cast for the bronze called *Reclining Figure: Festival* which was made for the 1951 Festival of Britain and is now located at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. I really like the white plaster. It gives the color and look of bone.

Reclining figure is made from plaster and string. Here is another figure, Draped Seated Woman in the same room made of bronze. There was a bench near by and I saw with her for a bit. I even talked to her.

Here are pictures of King and Queen I've taken through the years at the Hirshhorn Gallery in DC. I think I am attracted to this sculpture because they are a parental figure couple and in a way remind me of my parents.

While in England I saw many of Henry Moore's sculptures that centered on the family. Family group in Harlow, Madonna and Child at St. Paul's Cathedral, Mother and Child with Apple at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.

This piece is so surprising! The child is being held by the neck to stop it from feeding at the mother's breast. The sharp points of the child's head make it look like a vicious creature. The mother also looks a bit menacing with her sharp pointy face.

This is a small scale working model for a commission that Henry Moore had for a sculpture for the University of Chicago for the 25th anniversary of the nuclear energy. 

 
>It (the sculpture) sits on a square, granite paved, concrete platform at the spot where the Manhattan Project team built a nuclear reactor to produce the first self-sustaining controlled nuclear reaction, under the now-demolished west stands of the old Stagg Field. <sup>[1](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_Energy_(sculpture))</sup>

Henry Moore was one of the most famous artists of the 20th century, as evidenced by his commissions, like this one all around the world.

This castle on and island is very similar to Mont Saint Michael in France.

It  even has a causeway that you can walk on, to the island, at low tide or you need to take a boat at high tide. When we bought our tickets we also had to buy a boat ticket since it would be high tide. 

We did both!

**Low Tide**
At low tide you can walk back on the causeway. It was really cool that you could see the path underwater from the castle. It is also a good thing my toes were "pretty in pink" for the picture!

**Breakfast**

There is a cute restaurant called the Island Cafe, with outdoor seating where we got Tea and Scones, a pasty and a flapjack to share. On of my favorite foods while in England was scones with jam and clotted cream!

After breakfast we climbed up the hill. It was pretty steep. There are some legends of giants too. Below is a picture of the Giant's Well. There is a story about Jack the Giant Killer which reminded me of Jack and the Beanstalk.

**Fortification**

The castle is well protected from attack as it is sitting at the top of the island and has a lot of cannons sourrounding it.

**The Church**

The church was built in 1135 and the rebuilt in the 14th century and restored many times through the centuries. 

I really enjoyed sitting in this medieval church. Many people went through it on the tour and yet it still felt calm and peaceful. There were many beautiful stained glass windows and one of the workers pointed out to me that many had family scenes.

The statue below is of St. Michael, the patron Saint, that the church is named after.

**The Garden**
As much as I do enjoy historic houses I enjoy gardens even more! St. Michael's Mount has a beautiful terraced garden. You can get tickets to the castle or gardens or both. We did both.

If you are in Cornwall, especially Penazance I would highly suggest St. Michael's Mount! We were there for 5 hours (10am-2pm) and it was delightful.

**Cost in 2025:**
It costs me £25 for a combination Castle and Garden Ticket. And £3.20 for the boat (each way, I only took it once). You can do just the castle or just the garden. For a first time visit I highly recommend both!

Share Our World: England Trip: St. Micheal's Mount

This summer I went to England. My first stop,  right when I go off the plane was to the Tate Britain. 

The plane was late, so I missed the appointment I had to see the drawings of Stonehenge by Constable, Turner and Moore. That was sad. They are three of my favorite artists and I really wanted to see their drawings of Stonehenge before I went myself, later in the trip.

I am going to highlight one piece from each of the following artists: Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, John Constable, JMW Turner and John Singer Sargent. What a powerful group of artists and all in one museum. I could have spend days here.

#### Henry Moore
I have been a long time fan of Henry Moore (I went to a Henry Moore show at the New York Botanical Garden in NYC in 2008) and was so excited to see the extensive collection at the Tate Britain. Later in the week I went to Henry Moore's Estate in Hertfordshire. That was a treat.... and another post (s). 


One of Henry Moore's most consistent themes is the human form.

I was so excited to see this piece in person. Especially after watching this Smarthistory video.

I was able to see the lines and the eyes, and the unique hands and feet and the two breasts. It is a fascinating piece. One of the things I like best about sculpture is the ability to walk around it and see it from different angles, it is like seeing a whole different piece.

#### Barbara Hepworth
Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore went to art school together and are two of Britain's most famous modern sculptors. 

During this trip I went to Cornwall and went to the Barbara Hepworth museum and garden. It was great! Back to Pelagos.

Barbara Hepworth
Pelagos, 1946
Tate Britain, London, England

Here is another Smarthistory of Pelagos. It is a beautiful sculpture of the sea. 

It was shown at the 1950 Venice Biennale in the British Pavilion and in 1964 she presented this piece to the Tate Britain. It is one of her best known works and is of the sea that she loves so much. Barbara married fellow artist Ben Nicholson and together they moved to St. Ives, Cornwall in 1939, just before the start of WWII. This sculpture is made of Elm and strings.

#### John Constable

Constable is a Romanic Painter that is " is known principally for revolutionizing the genre of landscape painting". He painted what he saw and knew. Such as this painting... his father owned Flatford Mill.

John Constable
Flatford Mill, 1816-7
Tate Britain, London, England

In college I took a humanities class and learned about John Constable. Hey Wain is one of the first pictures I memorized and saw in person and Constable painted many beautiful pictures of Salisbury Cathedral. He holds a special place in my pantheon of artists.

#### Joseph Mallard William Turner

I was stunned by this picture by Turner. His use of color and his ability to convey the feeling of loneliness and being forlorn. During my class at Cambridge, Looking at art slowly, the teacher encouraged us to imagine something different about the work of art. What if the guard was not there with Napoleon? To me, the guard, and having two people makes this picture even more lonely. I want to go and stand in front of this picture again. Turner has a way of enveloping me in his paintings.

#### John Singer Sargent 
I was surprised **and so happy** that Sargent is in the Tate Britain. He is usually classified as an American Artist. His parents were American. Sargent was born in Florence, Italy and live most of his live in Europe and moved to London in 1886 where he stayed until his death in 1925. 

I got to see Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose and spend time with it. 

It is a gorgeous painting of two girls lighting lanterns in an English garden. It looks like there is light coming from the lanterns. How does an artist paint light like this??

Art Talk: Tate Britain

Hello! 

In July and August I went on a trip to England and have a lot to share with you. Today I was editing the Kew Garden pictures, so this is where I will start blogging. :) 

Kew Gardens is GREAT! In 2019 I visited with my siblings and we saw the garden with a Chihuly exhibit. That was a treat. 

I was so happy to be going back! Join me for a look at the Royal Botanic Garden, Kew through my lens (Nikon and Google Pixel). 

#### Mediterranean garden

This time I took a Thai Chi class and then wandered at my own pace, which was very slow do to plantar fasciitis. 

Here is our view of the Mediterranean garden as we did Thai Chi. I was so excited to find a Thai Chi class at Kew as I have been doing Thai Chi at the Desert Botanical Garden in Arizona.

The rose garden was beautiful. I really like when I find a rose that smells so delicious. The orange ones where usually the best smelling, to me.

#### Of the Oak
This is an immersive interactive installation that is set up next to a 265 year old oak tree. The digital display shows the growth cycles of the oak both above and below ground.

I am grateful for the **land train** that gives you a tour of this very big garden (121 hectares (300 acres)), it is well worth the 6.50 pounds!

#### Stop
I got off on one of the stops and saw this table that seats 24 people and a fox that looked at me and walked right past. Next time, I want to climb to the top of the pagoda and walk around the Japanese Garden.

#### The Waterlily house
This building was completed in 1852. It was beautiful and hot and crowded. Some of the lily pads were so huge!

In addition to the waterlily house there were some water lilies in containers in the temperate house. These were great. First, it inspired me to maybe grow some water lilies in a pot. How cool would that be? Second, I could get a lot closer to these water lilies.

If you are in London I highly recommend Kew Gardens! It is about an hour outside of London via the train and well worth the time.

Share Our World: England Trip: Kew Gardens

One of the biggest questions on my mind lately is do I need to take my SLR (big camera), Nikon D750 with me on vacation or can I just take my cell phone, a Google Pixel 7 Pro? 

I recently returned from a long trip to England. As I was editing pictures from the Henry Moore Estate I realized I had a lot of pictures to compare. The lighting was gorgeous, just after a rain storm. 

What do you think? 

Since the pictures are small it would be helpful to click on them and see them larger. 

I also realize that the biggest difference is going to come in the enlarging. I will get to that soon. I always print pictures from my summer travels for my office for the upcoming school year. Right now I thought it would be interesting to see what you think about these pictures that were taken with two different cameras at virtually the same time.

In December I went with my family to the Oregon Coast.

#### Otter Point Hike 
On our way out of town we stopped and did this beautiful hike. It was a little overcast and misty which was great! I even got some great ocean sounds that I listen to often.

I have been making these soups for awhile and freezing them in the Mason jars. While it is great to have them on hand they do take up a lot of space. With the freeze dryer I can keep them in a smaller space with no electricity for up to 25 years! So cool. 

With the water all out they are like nutritious Styrofoam.

Freeze Dryer: Soup

I am still working on blogging about trips and events from the end of last year. I went to Oregon to see my family for Christmas. It has become tradition to spend a couple of days on the Oregon coast and we always stop and walk around the majestic redwoods. 

It was a rainy afternoon as we walked through this forest of giants with so much green everywhere.

It is such a calming peaceful place. If I lived closer I would go a forest bath more often. For now, I will take the once a year I get in this rainforest sanctuary.

I am so excited to share the current exhibit at the Desert Botanical Garden with you [again](https://peakd.com/hive-155530/@sjarvie5/wednesday-walk-hybycozo-at-the-desert-botanical-garden). I have been a member for 15+ year and have shared many walks through the garden and different artist that have been exhibited here. 

HYBYCOZO is an incredible art duo that creates metal sculptures that are beautiful and shiny in the day and cast incredible shadows at night.

I met my friend Barbara at the garden after work. We walked around in the day. Had a seriously delicious meal at the restaurant and then walked around in the dark with the lights.
