  I've always had a soft spot for trains, ever since taking a train from Savannah to New York as a kid with my family. There is something quite romantic about them. So I was quite excited for this next leg of our Scandinavia trip. We planned to travel from Oslo to the western fjord lands by scenic train. It involved two trains, first Oslo to Myrdal, then Myrdal to Flam. We started in the hub of Oslo Central Station, but quickly made it out past the suburbs into the rolling farmlands. That was pretty, but it soon became quite beautiful as we headed up into the snowy mountains, past waterfalls, lakes, and even a glacier, barely visible through the low clouds. 

 At Myrdal we switched trains, just as the rain really started to come down. Little did we know that this train ride would be a slow motion cinematic experience with massive waterfalls, huge valleys, and incredible scenery. We made a stop at one waterfall, where they let everyone get off the train to get a better look. We heard this Celtic music playing, and saw that one lady in a bright red dress had somehow gotten way closer to the waterfall, walking out on some slippery, moss covered ancient ruin. I looked around to see if there was a trail, but then quickly realized that she was dancing to the music. She disappeared, only to reappear impossibly far below the ruins. There were at least two of the fairies in red, putting on a show just for us. It was totally unexpected. Now at to that a massive waterfall blowing water and wind out past the red fairies towards us, and you can start to imagine the surreal nature of the scene. After the two finished their performance we quickly loaded the train and descended farther into Flam valley. 

 The town of Flam was just as magical looking as the valley leading up to it. It felt like the lost world, as the sheer cliffs, rising thousands of feet on either side, made you feel very cut off from the rest of the world. We passed a church from the 1690's, and a cute railway museum before finding the end of the line. From here, a couple of vans picked us up and whisked us away, farther up the fjord, to a small town called Aurland. That will be our home for the next three days.

  Over the last fifty days I have been implementing an expedition style program on one of Silversea's classic fleet ships called the Silver Muse. It can hold around 600 passengers and is far and away the largest ship I've ever worked on. Figuring out the logistics of where the expedition equipment would go, like all of the zodiacs and kayaks, and other gear was only one of the many challenges that my team and I faced with this assignment.

   Now that we are all packed up and can relish in the success I can finally look back at the few times I did get off the ship for some pretty fabulous adventures in Alaska. When the ship was in port, and not all the expedition team was needed for our excursions, I would try to send the team out as escorts on shore based trips. This was one of my favorites.

  On one rainy day in Juneau I watched the poor shore concierge team as flight after flight of sightseeing helicopters postponed and outright canceled. There was a lot of confusions as some of these calls to cancel come at the last minute. On this day though I would get very lucky. All of a sudden a young girl called my group to head towards a waiting van. I really couldn't believe my luck. We jumped in and drove north out of town towards the airport. Once there we got all geared up with waterproof layers, boots, survival packs in the form of fanny packs, gloves, and even waiters. We walked out to a waiting helicopter and off we went!

  The clouds were pretty dark and low, but we had enough of a ceiling to fly up the face of Mendenhall Glacier. After a few scenic turns we touched down on lookers left of the glacier. Here our guide Jaydan met us and equipped all of us with crampons that fit snugly underneath our boots. I had experienced wearing crampons once before when I walked on Franz Josef glacier in New Zealand. The grip they give you on the ice, and the ability to walk up and down almost vertical slopes gives you the feeling of being a wild animal.

   The adventure was called Glacier Trekking with NorthStar trekking based in Juneau. We climbed around the ice marveling at sky blue streams running through the glacier, holes that seemed to have no bottom, and caves just big enough to squeeze through. Even though it was raining back down in Juneau, it was nice enough up on the glacier to take my camera along for the ride and score some amazing photo opportunities.

 We walked and explored for about an hour and a half before the helicopter came back for our pickup. Instead of flying straight back to the airport we spent a good half hour flying up Mendenhall glacier, over a few dog sledding camps high on the ice field, and then down  Herbert glacier out to Auk Bay. The drizzly rain greeted us again down at the airport where apparently it had never stopped. We all felt quite lucky to have had such an amazing experience.

  Enjoy scrolling through the rest of the pictures. Glaciers can be some of the most photogenic areas in nature. Juneau, Alaska happens to be a great place to access quite a few of them. I'm looking forward to more glacial mountaineering adventures in the future!

   A lot of people come to stare off into the vastness of the Grand Canyon. Many venture down one of the trails leading deep towards the canyon floor. Most turn back after a mile or two, and some might even make it down to a solid turn around spot like Indian Gardens. Even though I knew I would be here for almost two weeks I knew I wouldn't have much time for really big hikes. So with one of my extreme team campers from Catalina I ignored all the signs warning against hiking from the rim to the river back up the rim in one day, and off we went.

  The Bright Angel trail is considered the premier hiking trail into the Grand Canyon. It starts on top of the South Rim in Grand Canyon Village, just behind the historic Bright Angel Lodge. Going from rim to river to rim is warned against for very good reasons. The total elevation change is around 9,000ft down and up over the span of 16 miles. You can find water along the way at different rest houses but there is a six mile stretch past Indian Garden down to the Colorado river and back where drinkable water is absent. It did not escape my notice that all the warning signs had a picture of a fit guy in his mid 20's and read, 'this is the kind of hiker we saved over 200 times.'

  The temperature and dehydration can be the real dangers of this trail. Even if temperatures are in the upper 80's at the beginning of the trail (6860ft elevation), it can be well into the 100's at the bottom of the canyon (2480ft elevation). We made sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen, although I did end up regretting the lack of a hat. The other big danger of the trail....animal attacks! Although the most common animal attack is a bite from a squirrel! Don't feed the squirrels.

   The trail itself is a pretty consistent sloping grade. Going down is deceptively easy but after a few miles even that starts to wear on the muscles. But all you have to do is stop, whip out the camera, and soak in the incredible views. There is almost no way to take in the true scope of the canyon until you descend deep to the bottom of it. I can only imagine what the first adventurers to set eyes on the Grand Canyon must have thought.

   After many water breaks and switchbacks we came to our destination, the might Colorado river. It was red with erosion from previous storms and very cold. There was a sign saying 'no swimming' but I had to go test the waters at least a little bit. It was most refreshing and a much needed revitalization for the long trek up still to come.

  The way back up is daunting all the way till the very end. You have to stop and soak in the views if for nothing else than to catch your breath. People still catch mule rides down and up on this trail and we came across a mule train as we approached the lush Indian Garden section. They are pretty mild mannered for mules so we just stepped off the trail and watched them pass a few feet from us. The Havasupai people originally used this trail to reach the fresh water springs at the lush section known now as Indian Garden.

  I saw many people on the trail who did get in over their heads and were having a very tough time climbing back out. But we didn't see anyone else doing the rim to rim hike like us. We set a torrid pace and finished up only 7.5 hours after we started. Afterwards we had to celebrate and reward ourselves with ice cream from the famous Fountain shop back on top of the rim. There are some pretty amazing hikes around the world but this has got to be top five. I can't think of any better to say welcome to the Grand Canyon.

 It is hard to put into words or to capture with a camera the immensity of the Grand Canyon.  Stretching for 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile 6,093 feet it is easily visible from space. It has been named one of the natural wonders of the world and the National Park and Indian reservations that encompass the canyon draw millions of visitors a year.

 There are several ways to experience the canyon. Most visitors drive in to the Grand Canyon National Park and peer over the edge from the South Rim. A small fraction of these test their limits by hiking down almost a mile towards the canyon floor. This is also where some adventurous visitors start, by rafting the mighty Colorado River. Famed for its incredible view and notorious rapids, one could spend close to a month rafting through the canyon, never seeing the same place twice. Visitors coming from Vegas now has a new way to experience the canyon with the transparent "sky walk." This glass walkway leads out from a  visitor center arcing its way out over the canyon giving a unique perspective. Although for $80, 4.5 hours drive from the Grand Canyon Village, and not being allowed to bring out a camera it is not highly recommended. The better way to get a bird's eye view is to head up in a whirly-bird, or helicopter.

Geology: The Grand Canyon is a fissure in the Colorado Plateau that exposes uplifted Proterozoic and Paleozoic strata. What this means is that layers of multi-colored rocks line the canyon walls dating back millions of years. These rock layers record much of the early geologic history of the North American continent.

  The great depth of the Grand Canyon and especially the height of its strata (most of which formed below sea level) can be attributed to 5–10 thousand feet (1,500 to 3,000 m) of uplift of the Colorado Plateau, starting about 65M years ago. This uplift has steepened the stream gradient of the Colorado River and its tributaries, which in turn has increased their speed and thus their ability to cut through rock.

Having just spent 12days at the canyon i came to realize that even though the canyon has been forming for millions of years it is undergoing constant changes. New storms bring more erosion and visible changes while the angle of light hitting the canyon walls brings an ethereal change throughout the day and into the evening. The temperature can vary over twenty degrees from the top of the rim to bottom. And once at the bottom you can step from scorching dry heat into a raging ice cold river. Although as I sit at 30,000ft flying back to Alaska  I realize the biggest change may have been me.

The Magnificent Grand Canyon

  Rocky Mountain National Park in early May can be a slew of different weather. In one day of hiking you can go from wildflower blooming meadow to deep snow covered trails and from overcast to sun burning to rainstorm all in a matter of hours. In fact during my one day exploring the park this is exactly what happened to me.

  I started out at the Bear Lake trailhead. It is a very easy, very accessible trail that is a short, mostly level jaunt from the parking lot to the edge of the lake. But at 9,475ft elevation it was covered in deep snow. I was lucky I was there early morning as the trail is popular and becomes quite slushy as the day progresses. The lake itself was mostly iced over though too thin to try and walk out on. With giant peaks of the Rockies looming just behind the lake I could imagine the early morning reflections that must draw photographers in the summer season.

  An offshoot trail from here leads about a mile up to one of the best waterfalls in the park, called Alberta Falls. A glacially fed river tumbles down a narrow gorge. This gave me a perfect opportunity for some long exposure shots. And while waiting for the photos I was kept company by some very bold chipmunks. Grey and stellar jays played in the trees above me, woodpeckers pounded away at trees in the forest, and big wild turkeys put on mating displays on the drive up.

 Families enjoyed the Bear Lake loop trail, while thos a bit more adventurous, and with better gear, headed up to some of the smaller, higher lakes. Except for the bird calls, the forest noises were muffled by a thick blanket of snow. A rocky outcropping overlooking Nymph Lake provided yet another great view of the continental divide and the frozen lake below.

  Driving back down a ways my next stop was at the Sprague Lake Nature Trail. This is another very easy, and beautiful path around a lake that even boasts wheelchair accessibility. It was while I was here that the overcast weather started to dissipate leaving picturesque landscapes. A couple of friends set out in a canoe, slowly drifting with their fishing lines bobbing up and down. Once again views of the high peaks of the continental divide showed themselves, lending a stellar background. It's no wonder that this was the place recommended to me for early morning sunrise shots.

   The lake seemed quite shallow and did provide a great habitat for some local wildlife. I imagine that bears and mountain lions make their way down while there are no people around, but I did see a family of mallards and Canada geese. This place will be on the list to return to for sunrise/sunset.

  Next I headed down in elevation to a beautiful expansive meadow called Moraine Park. The meadow is what is left behind after a glacier receded back into the mountains. The scoured earth left behind is now covered in grass and a favorite feeding place for elk and deer. A large herd could be seen lounging far back in the meadow. Picnic tables were set up and a picturesque river ran through the middle of the meadow.

  If you were planning a picnic lunch stop, then this should probably be it. It'll be a good place to bust out your binoculars as well.

  From here I headed back to the main road and followed it high up into the mountains as far as the park would let me go, a place called Rainbow Curve. The views in all directions were magnificent. I found myself pulling over at every overlook. And now the white puffy clouds were starting to take on a dark grey tinge letting me know I better hurry if I want to fit this all in. The snow banks were 10ft high next to the road in some places and I watched the outside temperature dropping on my car's digital dash readout. The rains did come but not before I could walk past where I could drive and really soak in the high altitude splendor of the Rocky Mountains.

Exploring Rocky Mountain National Park, CO

From top to bottom Argentina is a bird lovers paradise. Recently Heidi and I traveled across Argentina searching for beautiful views, hikes, and of course wildlife. We knew that incredible hikes to glaciers, mountain vistas, lakes, and waterfalls existed across the country but we were surprised at the amazing birdwatching opportunities.

     The same places you travel for amazing views; Ushuaia, El Calafate, El Chalten, and Iguazu are the same places that birders 'in the know' travel for big time bird watching. The different environments change from cold ocean in Ushuai, to desert and freshwater lakes in Patagonia, to tropical jungle in Iguazu. Because of this the opportunities to see very different bird species change as well, from penguins down south to toucans up north.

Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego National Park: We will start down south in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. Here a boat trip out into the famous Beagle Canal gives you chances to see comorants, penguins, skuas, albatross, and terns, among other deep south ocean birds. Then a trip into Tierra del Fuego provides a wonderful chance for forest birds, like the Magellanic woodpecker, austral parakeet, and southern caracara as well as freshwater species like the spectacled duck and steamer duck.

 El Calafate and El Chalten: A 17 hour bus ride or couple hour flight to the north takes you deep into the heart of Patagonia. Here the snow capped peaks of the Andes Mountains send glacial fed rivers out into the desert-like landscape of Patagonian ranchlands. This uncommon environments is home to some amazing birdlife. Ostrich-like landbirds called rhea run amongst the prickly calfate shrubs, while caracara, condors, and eagles line the fence post and circle the sky looking for their next meal.

  In El Calafate the edge of the glacial lake a quaint nature reserve called the Reserva Laguna Nimez plays host to a multitude of exotic species like the Chilean flamingo, upland goose, southern lapwings, and nesting harriers. Also if you get a chance to drive towards Perito Moreno Glacier on some of the back roads you increase your opportunities for condor, eagle, caracara, and rhea
sightings.

Iguazu Falls: All the way on the north eastern border of Argentina and Brazil you will find a totally different environment housing new species of birds. It almost feels like you are descending into the Amazon basin as you walk around the miles of boardwalks set up for sightseeing inside the Iguazu Falls National Park. The trick here is to come early in the morning before the crowds. This will give you your best shot for seeing rare toucan species that call this area home. Great dusky swifts are seen near the waterfalls, their nest actually hidden in the cliffs behind the falling water. Another can't miss are the plush-crested jays.   It turns out that South America is one of the best places in the world for birding. Thousands of species exists on the continent leaving you all kinds of options. Argentina is such a birding hot spot because the country stretches across so many different ecosystems. Just another reason to add it to your travel list.

Incredible Birdwatching in Patagonia, Argentina

  If you are looking for the easiest, most accessible, and well set-up spot for shore diving in Maui, look no further than Ulua Beach. Located just before the shops of Wailea, it is a short drive from the scuba shops in Kihei. I would suggest Maui Dreams as they have the cheapest tank rentals on the island. 

It has been a long time since I dove Ulua Beach. For some reason it didn't impress me much early in my Maui diving career and I just always went to other places over it after that. But with time for one dive left before heading back to Vermont, Heidi and I decided to give it a try. And I'm so glad we did. 



  The set-up for shore diving here is some of the best in Maui. There are multiple showers, a bathroom, and even a couple of benches with tank holding spots near the car drop-off spot. You can drop everything off there and then head back a few hundred feet for parking. The walk down to the beach is very easy, and just like that you are wading out into the calm waters over a very sandy bottom. 



  This is a pretty shallow dive, following the rocky outcropping to the right of Ulua Beach. The coral is thriving here and forms a very dense reef. We were hoping to find frogfish and harlequin shrimp, but despite our best search, we came up empty. Yet the dive still felt like a huge success. We saw tons of fish, a few turtles, and tons of nudibranchs. Red spotted and gold lace nudibranchs really stole the show. We stayed underwater for about an hour and fifteen minutes, but I could have stayed for another hour easily. 



  Now that we know how easy Ulua is to dive, it won't take us another decade to come back like this time.

Easiest Shore Dive in Maui: Ulua Beach

If you are looking for a wonderful scuba dive, that you can do from shore on Maui, then look no further than the old Mala Pier. The colors underwater are out of this world, and the turtles and sharks are usually in plentiful supply. I've snorkeled here and dove here many times, and it never gets old. In fact, it is one of the 'must-see' places I take people to when they visit me here in Maui. 

Today I left the wide angle camera at home. I've taken lots of turtle and shark pictures here before. I was on the hunt for some of the more secretive animals. I was on a treasure hunt for things like nudibranchs, eels, frogfish, and whatever else I could find hiding amongst the corals and wreckage. 

  Using a special macro lens on my Canon 5d, I was able to get in close, add flash, and bring out the true color of all of the marine life. Take a look at some of these photos below and see if you agree with me that this might just be the 'Most Colorful Dive on Maui!"

Most Colorful Scuba Dive on Maui

Today was a great day to go scuba diving in south Maui. We grabbed some tanks from Maui Dreams Dive Shop and drove down to Makena Landing. We were on the lookout for nudibranchs as usual, but also just eager to enjoy the pristine conditions. The visibility underwater was the best we've had in months, and we ended up with some pretty cool critter finds. Check out the pics below!

Incredible Shore Dive in Maui

 I've always been fascinated with the giant shipwreck grounded on the shallow reef on the windward side of the island of Lana'i in Hawaii. The channel here is almost always windy and wavy, which means that you can't easily get to the wreck. You especially can't get close to it. But every once in a while the winds will shift... and today was one of those days. 

  So I grabbed my crew and we headed out to explore the wreck from our small boats. The sun came out, really showing off the rusty red color of the hulking ship. It was a self propelled Navy fuel barge, made out of ferro-cement. It is very strong, hence why it is still here.

 The ship was contracted out to a company that was supposed to scuttle it in the mid 1950's, but instead they lost control of it in the channel, and it washed up on the shallow reef of Lana'i, where it sits today. It looks like a ghost ship, and even more so when you get up close.

  The color of rust is everywhere on the ship. Steel rebar sticks out at weird angles from the crumbling cement hull. The fact that anyone built a ship out of cement is still boggling my mind. 

  I was surprised even more when I saw a rope strung up along the side of the ship. It looked like tetnus just waiting to happen. I would not want to try and climb through all that rusty metal, or walk on top of the deck which was sure to cave in at any moment.

One of my favorite parts were some holes in the bow. Waves would enter the holes and then pour out of the bow moments later. There is something very eerie about shipwrecks. This one in particular. But there is also something so fascinating and picturesque. We caught it on the perfect day and now I get to share it with you.

Exploring the Shipwreck of the YOGN-42

The Humpback Whale action here in Maui is heating up. The whales are here from November to early April, so the season is finishing up, but the action is as hot as ever. Over the last two days, I have had tremendous success capturing different whale breaches on camera. 

Any of you who have gone whale watching before know how hard getting one breaching photo is. You never know where the whale is coming up next, or if a breach is going to happen. You have to put in your time, find the right whale, and hope for a second and third chance. 

I feel like I have been in-tune with the whales these past two days. I've had my camera ready to shoot at the right moments. Again, all of these photos are from the last two days. I have been out on boats, near Lahaina, Maui for all of these shots. 

I have also used two different cameras. My main, go-to camera setup is a Canon 5d mark ii, with a Canon L-series 100-400 telephoto lens. 
However, my favorite photo from this series was actually captured with an iPhone 12 Pro Max. It was one of the closest breaches I have had from a small boat, about 40 feet away, and I was look up 20ft at a whale leaping out of the water. Check it out below!

 Yesterday we had two wonderful adventures here on the Big Island of Hawaii. Both adventures were very private and intimate experiences, away from the crowds. Read on to find out how you two can do these amazing activities away from the crowds.

 Two, very popular activities on the Big Island of Hawaii are trekking through volcanic landscapes and going snorkeling at night with huge manta rays. Usually people go to Volcanos National Park to see the volcanic landscape, and while this is an amazing experience you may experience large crowds, especially when there is an active eruption to see. The manta ray snorkeling experience is no different, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity, but there can be dozens of boats, putting 20 snorkelers in all at the same place, and can feel quite crowded. 

  However, there is a way to get off the beaten path and do both of these activities without the crowds. It can feel like being in Hawaii 50 years ago. Here is how I did it yesterday, and how you can plan it yourself!

  For the manta ray snorkel, the most popular, well-known spots are just north of Kona near the airport, and a little south of Kona near the old Sheraton. These two spots are where all of the boats go and 99% of the tourists. However, there is a little known secret manta spot, where only two small boats go, just North of Puako Harbor. It is near the big resorts of Waikaloa, so if you are staying there it could be even closer to your homebase. Imagine being in the water with these amazing creatures and being the only people around for miles. It feels like the mantas are there just for you. 

  They are there to feed on plankton that congregates in the underwater lights that are shining down for the surfboard your group is holding onto. This means that if you are lucky, these giant animals will gracefully flip and roll right under you, trying to get very close to the lights and maximize their plankton intake. We had great conditions last night and several close encounters. 

  You can plan this yourself by booking your manta snorkel with Blue Wilderness Adventures. They have pioneered this spot and have very knowledgeable guides. They provide wetsuits, snacks, and your best opportunity to have this experience away from the crowds.

  For the second private adventure you have to check out Hawaii Forest and Trails. This company offers hikes and guided tours around the island, but the biggest secret that often gets overlooked is their 'Hidden Craters' hike. It takes you 6,000ft up Hualalai Volcano, which is the closest volcano to Kona town. It last erupted 200 years ago and flowed down to the water near the airport. In fact, the Kona airport is built right on top of this lava flow. Pretty wild. 

  The reason I like this hike so much is that this company is the only commercial company that has access to this land. You go through two locked gates, onto land that has been passed down and conserved from the ancient Kings and Queens of Hawaii. The volcanic features that you explore include deep fissures, pit craters, and even underground lava tubes. The entire time you are walking through a native Hawaiian forest, filled with the sounds of endemic Hawaiian honeycreeper birds. It is the one place in the islands where not much has changed in the past 1000 years.

Manta Rays and Volcano Hikes off the Beaten Path in Hawaii

**Finding Africa's Big 5**

   If you are looking for Africa's "Big 5" then Kruger National Park should be your destination. For those not in the know the Big Five is a term left over from colonial hunting days in Africa for the five animals that if a hunter shot but didn't kill, the animal could charge and kill the hunter. This elite group of potentially deadly animals include elephants, rhino, leopard, lion, and cape buffalo. Now the term is thrown around more by enthusiastic wildlife watchers in safari vehicles trying to shoot a photo of the Big 5.

  Even though these animal sightings are heavily sought after, to the point of camps having recent sightings boards up with moveable magnets for each animals, it can still be quite a challenge to see them all. If you are in a place like Kruger National Park in South Africa and get quite lucky then it is possible to see them all in a day, but the longer you stay in the park the better your chances.

  African elephants are often one of the first of the Big 5 to be spotted by visitors to the park. With nearly 14,000 elephants in Kruger daily sightings are almost guaranteed. And even if you aren't looking at an elephant you can probably look around and see some evidence that one has been in the area. Trees toppled over and elephant dung are two often visible sights along the roads. This is also the one member of the big 5 that still makes me very nervous while inside the 'safety' of a safari vehicle, as they have been known to charge, damage, and even flip over cars in the past.

   Seeing rhinos in the wild is always a magical experience, and one that you may not have a chance to see in the future. Poaching of rhinos for their horns is at an all time high, especially in Kruger National Park where nearly 500 rhinos have been killed by poacher THIS YEAR! Officials say that at any time they expect around a dozen groups of poachers are working their illegal trade inside the park, mostly up by the Zimbabwe and Mozambique borders. As the population of rhinos dwindles the demand for rhino horns increases. Hopefully education and conservation will ultimately win this war but in the meantime I savor each and every rhino encounter. 



  The fact that we can see white and black rhinos can be seen inside the park which is an amazing thing when you look at how critically endangered they have been. Southern white rhino populations dipped to a low of 50 in the early 20th century but are not up around 14,500. Black rhino populations dipped below 2500 in the late 2000's but efforts to save them have brought the number's back up a little. If you want some less hopeful rhino news you can take a look at the wikipedia page on black rhinos and see how many subspecies have gone extinct under our watch. We were lucky enough to see 2 different black rhinos over a week long stay in Kruger and quite a few white rhinos.The total number of rhinos in the park is a closely guarded secret due to poaching.

   The most elusive member of the big 5 and the reason so many visitors end up going home having only seen 4 out of 5, is the leopard. Hunting and night and hiding during the day make these beautiful cats chance encounters for the normal visitor on safari. The best way to up your chances is to find out when the camp gates open in the morning and be one of the first cars out, or to sign up for an evening or night game drive with one of the park camps. There is nothing quite like spotting the reflective night visioned eyes of a leopard peering back at you during a night drive. With just over 1,000 leopards thought to call the park home, Kruger National Park is one of the best places to find them.

 A wonderful thing about Kruger is the amount of lions! The park boast a population of around 1,750 lions, which makes the chances of spotting the biggest of African cats a very good bet. So that makes the real trick seeing an active lion, instead of a sleeping one. It is common for these amazing hunters to nap over 20hrs in a day, which doesn't make for the greatest photo opportunities. But with so many lions in the park you may see lions mating, lion cubs playing, lions with eating, or the ultimate...lions on the hunt and making a kill.

   We saw several prides of lions daily over this past week displaying all kinds of behaviors. What was really interesting was the mixture of types of prides. Some were all male, some female with cubs, others were mating pairs off together, while another was six males and one female. These lions make for wonderful photography subjects since they are not shy around vehicles and will occasionally walk right around the car. Several times I found myself having to decide between getting the picture or rolling up the window they were so close. Lions are also commonly spotted on night game drives and if you are ever woken up at night by the roar of a nearby lion I promise it is a sound you will never forget.

   The last of the big 5 is the cape buffalo. Not to be confused with American bison incorrectly called 'buffalo' these are the true buffalo and one of the most feared of the big 5. Adults weigh in around 1,300lbs and can have a bit of a temper. I once saw a pride of 13 lions attack a solo male buffalo and it took them 45 minutes of constant attacking, chasing, and biting to finally bring the buffalo down. It is reported that buffaloes have killed more hunters in Africa than any other animal, sometimes attacking people who harmed them years after the actual event! While walking through the Okavango delta among all kinds of wildlife this was the animal that our guide was most scared of. But with over 37,000 buffalo in the park, and from inside a safari vehicle, you can have many safe buffalo sightings to complete the big 5.

Finding Africa's Big 5 in Kruger National Park, South Africa

 The Big Island of Hawaii is known for its big adventures. It has erupting volcanos, flowing lava, the tallest mountain on Earth (when measured from its base), and some of the best star gazing around. Scuba divers and snorkelers are astounding by the colors of the nearshore reefs as well as the nice wall dives that can present its own unique species. Manta Rays frequent certain spots at night and humpback whales can be seen leaping out of the ocean during the winter months. It is a great place to vacation to, especially if you are adventurous or into marine life. That is where I come in. 

  Today I took my guests on a dolphin search. We left out of Kona, on the west side of the Big Island. We saw Hawaiiain spinner dolphins near shore, doing their morning resting routine. Then we had a very rare sighting of roughtooth dolphins in deeper, offshore water. Then my favorites appeared, the pantropical spotted dolphins. They are the most acrobatic of the bunch, sometimes leaping 5 meters into the air. 

  Spotted dolphins also love to bowride. They surf the underwater wave created by the boat plowing through the water. Looking over the edge of the bow, it hardly seems like they flap their tails at all. But today, it isn't the bowriding dolphins I'm after. It is the dolphins playing in our wake, behind the boat. I wanted to try to photograph these, just as they leapt out of the water, so it looks like they are leaping right at the camera.

Dolphins on the High Seas off Captain Cook, Hawaii

  No one visits the island of Molokai on their visits to the Hawaiian Islands. It is one of the hidden gems that only travelers in the know will ever see. It is known as the "Friendly Isle", yet that isn't the vibe that most tourists get when asking around about traveling here. The disconnect comes from the fact that the 8,000 residents of Molokai have found a way to exist without the need for tourism. This is very different than the other islands. Hunting, fishing and farming still provides the bulk of food for families, some live totally off the grid, in a very traditional Hawaiian way. There are no stop lights, no chain restaurants, and only one hotel on the entire island. The most famous hike on the island goes through private property, so hiring a local guide is a must... which also turns off potential travelers since there are so many hikes on the other main Hawaiian islands that are free to do. 
 
  So what is the trick, you ask? How do I see the true friendliness of the 'Friendly Isle?' Easy, you get to know someone who lives there. Get invited to their home. Become a part of the community. And above all, you don't change Molokai, you let Molokai change you. It is a place for gatherings, cultural practitioners, waterfalls, and history. For those travelers willing to go the extra mile, and immerse themselves into island life, it can be an experience like none other. 

  I have the privilege to take travelers to the island of Molokai every week. We have a cultural immersion with a family in Halawa Valley. The beautiful valley on the northeast corner of the island is covered by a thick rainforest, ancient rock walls left by the last 50 generations of Hawaiians, and backed by beautiful waterfalls falling into sacred pools. Our guests learn about what is truly Hawaiian, not just what people see in the hotel industry. They go through the ancient practice of asking permission to enter the land. We see ancient Heiaus, or temples, and modern taro patches, being pounded into purple poi with tools passed down through the generations. 

 My favorite adventure here is to hike along the river, crossing several times, on our way up to Mo'o Ula falls. It is the type of scene that everyone pictures when they think of Hawaii, yet we have it all to ourselves. It is a place that less than 1% of 1% of travelers will ever see.  After two river crossing, an obstacle course of down trees to navigate, and miles through the rainforest, we emerge victorious at Mo'oula Falls. A cool, refreshing dip under the falls is just what our sore muscles need.

After a dip in the pools, and a picnic lunch, everyone is feeling ready for the hike back. Only on Molokai can you have an experience like this, while not seeing a single other person.

Experiencing Halawa Valley on Molokai, Hawaii 

Incredible Snorkel at Mala Pier, Maui

  This may be one of the best kept secrets of Maui. Just outside the bustling port village of Lahaina, there is an old concrete pier, lying at the sandy bottom after hurricane Iniki wrecked it with massive waves back in 1992. Since then it has become a magnet for marine life. Corals cover the wreckage of the old pier, giving it a bit of a shipwreck feel as you hover at the surface. Fish have come to live in the coral, and sea turtles also call the area home. 

   Today was one of those lucky days were the water was flat calm, the sky was sunny and blue, and the site was uncrowded. The reason this is such a great spot to know about is that you can actually get here without a boat. If you know where to swim out you can easily reach the snorkel site from the beach. I often grab my scuba tank and do shore dives here, although today was all about snorkeling with my guests. And what a snorkel it was!

 The first snorkeler in the water was greeted with this beautiful Green Sea Turtle. They are the only native reptiles to the Hawaiian Islands and they are federally protected. They have made an incredible comeback during the last 40 years, almost from the brink of extinction in the islands.

 Underwater wreckage is a great place to find the very rare Commerson's Frogfish. They stay very still, and look just like they are part of the reef. The guests still couldn't see him so I gave him a little tap and he moved just enough for them to see.

 Frogfish come in all colors, and always look grumpy. They have a very fast reflex and are ambush predators.... luckily not for us.

 I was just floating at the surface when this turtle swam right by me. He almost bumped me from behind. I stayed calm and so did he.

 I was shocked to find a Hawaiian Day Octopus ontop of the reef. They are usually so camouflaged that you never see them. This one changed colors right after this picture. Check out the next photo to see how he looked, moments later.

 The other guide decided to hold the octopus to show all the guests. It was wild to see it grab onto him, climb up his shoulder, ink everywhere, and then just sit there. The guests even got to pet it!

 The predator of the octopus was found next, a white mouthed moray eel. Look at the razor sharp teeth! I had to get pretty close for this picture. Luckily they aren't usually aggressive to divers.

 We aren't finished yet. After all that we found another frogfish. This one was a beautiful red color. I just love this spot.

  I took all these photos using a small point and shoot underwater camera called an Olympus Tough. It really is a great camera, very small, that can take some beautiful photos. And you can take it down to 50ft.

Turtles, Octopus, Moray Eels, Frogfish, and more at Mala Pier, Snorkel in Hawaii

 What!? Who does this? Well, I grew up catching alligators with my dad in the marshes of Savannah, GA. Now I have little kids of my own, but we live in Vermont and Hawaii.... so no alligators around. That is until we visit my dad back in Savannah! So what would any father do in this situation... well, keep his kids up late, take them out into the marsh, and show them how to catch alligators of course!

  First let me explain. We do not harm or kill the alligators. My father figured out a way to catch them, tag them, and release them in a very humane way (without hurting them.) Education is also a huge part of what he does. Nowadays, there are many people moving into houses right at the edge of the water. So there are more and more people living close to alligators. Usually they are very afraid for their small dogs and their small kids. So we want to educate them about peacefully coexisting with local wildlife, alligators included. So we take them out in canoes, show them how to catch an alligator, and them (after taping the mouth shut with electric tape), let them take pictures with the gators. After touching and holding and learning about these amazing creatures, they are much less likely to want to kill them. Knowledge is power. 

  So this is what I wanted to share with my 4 year old and 3 year old. Actually, my 4 year old had already been out gatoring with me once when she was 2. She was very proud telling this to her younger brother. 
 
   We prepared all of our alligator catching stuff, and headed off after nightfall. We use a powerful headlight connected to a car battery to search the waters for eye shines. When you shine a light at wildlife during the night, the reflective material in their eyes glow bright red or green. This is how we spot the alligators. It also helps in catching them. If you hold the spotlight on them very steady, then they freeze, almost like a deer caught in the headlights. We then have a long pole with a slipknot at the end which we carefully slide over their head. When it is around their neck we pull up, the knot cinches down, and the alligator is caught!

   We didn't have much success at first this night, even though we saw a lot of alligators. We did manage to catch a huge bull frog which the kids really enjoyed. As we were headed home we struck gold, and noosed a three and a half footer! The kids watched in awe and my dad and I handled the alligator, taped its mouth shut, then educated them about all the parts of the animal. The kids got to touch it, and they agreed, it was like touching a dinosaur. 

  After all the excitement of catching and releasing the alligator, the kids were nearly falling asleep. So we headed back to their comfy beds to dream about alligator catching. I don't think they realize how unique an experience this really is.

Catching Alligators with my Kids

  There are some amazing adventures to be had in Alaska. One of my favorite vehicles for adventure is a kayak. There is something so peaceful about the quiet that comes with kayaking. No sound from motors, no propellers to hit on shallow rocks. It is the perfect way to silently sit and watch nature unfold before you. 

   I have had some wonderful animal encounters from a kayak as well, probably because of the quietness of it. Also, as a photographer, I love the very close-to-the-ground perspective. Shooting up at wildlife is often a very powerful way to capture them. And if you are not disturbing them then you can get them walking towards you which is powerful as well. 

  Today was a pretty spectacular kayak. I was at a place called Pavlof Harbor. It is a well known spot to find coastal brown bears, especially during the salmon season. A large lake empties over a waterfall and down a river into the harbor. It is pretty dramatic scenery, but when you add feeding brown bears into the mix you definitely take it up a notch. 
 
 Take a look at some of the photos of my guests and I venturing up the river, to the waterfall, where two brown bear siblings were feasting away on the salmon. Believe it or not, the salmon can make it up that raging waterfall to the lake above. The two bears didn't take much note of us, other than sniffing in our direction a few times. They eventually walked down the shoreline right past us before disappearing into the forest. 

  A brief, beautiful moment in time.

Kayaking with Grizzly Bears

  The waters in Southeast Alaska are quite often flat calm. This is due to the over 1,000 islands that protect the narrow waterways, inlets, and bays from the effects of the open ocean. These conditions make for some pretty epic kayaking. 
  
   Sometimes the waters are so calm, they almost look like a mirror. Today was one of those times. We were anchored at the Magoun Islands, near Sitka and I led a guided kayak group in and around the little islands. It is an easy place to get lost if you don't know your way around. 
 
  I knew right away that it was going to be a special kayak with the calm conditions and the fact that a little blue sky was showing. This is a rainforest so usually a little rain is in the forecast at some point. But the conditions got better and better. There wasn't a breath of wind, which gave us some beautiful reflections on the water. 

  Take a look below. The trees, rocky shoreline, the kayaks and kayakers, and even the clouds in the sky light up the surface of the water with beautiful reflections.
