This is my entry into the Splinterlands fanart contest you can see the awesome artwork from last week <a href="https://peakd.com/hive-13323/@splinterlands/splinterlands-art-contest-week-365">here</a> . The Silverleaf warlock is one of my favorite of the conclave arcana cards. Buffing allies with a +1 speed(which is amazing), doing 2 magic damage, and when paired with Kaylia he gets execute. All that for a mere 6 mana. What's not to love? (playing against it that's what)

Since I largely use this fantastic fellow when playing Kaylia I attempted to create a setting that looked like boardwalk up in the trees. I'm not sure sure if I pulled it off our not. (you tell me)

It began with some different ideas. I knew with how much I liked the elf bloodline I wanted to do something with them, and since I'm almost always playing them with Kaylia it'd be something that makes one think of the earth splinter. It's kinda hard to tell what's going on these but it was just me thinking through the different ideas.

From there I started sketching the trees and boardwalk.

From there I sketched in the warlock's pose and the magic, which took me a lot of tries to get a pose I liked.

Then I started working in the colours to figure out what was what. I colour picked some from a refrence but others I just sorta guessed at. I really enjoyed working on the blobby attack guy.

Then I did base colours for the background, trees and boardwalk. I'm pretty happy with the composition.

I started working in some shadows here, I used the same type of purple as the warlocks clothing to keep a sense of connection between everything, and i like to use contrasting colours for shadows and lights. And since the biggest source of light and bright colours is the bright green attack blob, making the shadows purple made sense to me.

I also added some texture to the background to hopefully make it more interesting. backgrounds aren't my strong suit but I think this one worked out okay.

Then I focused on the hand and refining the shape of the attack bloob. Hands are hard and it took me a long while to get this one from 'I hate it and it's horrible" to "Well it's not the worst."

Working on the details of the blobbs face was super fun. Pushing the contrast to make it scarier made me happy. Seriously, love this guy.

I had a lot of fun playing around with different shading, colours and feels while working on the tail? Body? of the warlock's attack.

From there I darkened the background to up the contrast. I also refined the shape of the warlock's clothing and head shape since it wasn't quite right before. Which took me a few ties to get since heads are tricky. With the hair drawin it I found the figure felt a lot more complete.

After that I started working on the details of the face which was, if I'm honest, frustrating. Portraits are not my strength, and I wanted him to look awesome. Doing the clothing was far easier. Working in the shadows in darker and darker purple to make them have depth.

The next thing I fought with was the hand further back. I alternated between the frustration of the hand, and having fun working on the blob attack.

And after that I finally finished the hand and called it done.

S is for Silver leaf Warlock

Skunks come in a lot of different patterns then a single stripe down the middle.

It began with  sketch as it always does for me.

Figuring out the pattern was fun.

I filled in the dark first.

I put the screen in grey scale to see the difference between the black and white better.

It took a bit of fooling around to get the fuzzy effect down. I also at this point realize the face shape is all wrong.

I mostly fixed the head, and am over all pretty happy with the furry texture.

S is for Skunk

For this community engagement challenge we were challenged to pick rule sets we love are hate and how we cope with them or why we love them. 

For this post I'm going to talk about briar patch and even stevens.

Briar patch means that every unit who hits with a melee attack takes two damage, unless they have deflector shield in which case, they do not. 

Many of my usual strategies weren't an option for this match since only three splinters were active, however, lots of mana. I'm personally really enjoying the higher frequency of high mana matches this season. 

Brair patch punishes melee units so focusing on having ranged and magic is key. I tend to have one high health melee unit to act as a tank but otherwise magic and ranged it is. 

The other thing to consider is that you're opponet will do the same, this means ability like silence and headwind may effect more units than in other matches. Shield, void and void armour are always good, but in the brair patch rule set shield halves the damage a unit takes, void helps deal with the amount of magic being tossed, and void armour helps a unit last longer against magic since the magic attacks have to get through their armour. 


The last thing I like to do with any of the retaliation rulesets is have a unit with amplify. This increases the damage from 2 to 3, which means that with shield they still take 2. 

With life splinter out I can't just use Bella and ignore it. I had initially considered cryptic since both life and water were active, however many of my favorite cards weren't allowed due to even stevens.(Arcane weaver for one.)  After spending half the prep time with cryptic I went with Kaylia.

I didn't really think of anyone else that would add a ton so two more magic with a chance of exacute, why not. We've got some solid cards in here. Slade as a tank is rarely a bad choice. He's beefy, does solid damage and has a pretty high rate of not being hit with dodge + 4 speed. 

Warborn Shaman does 3 magic which is rare, and they've got void armour so they can take more magic damage. 

Captain fellblade has two attacks and stealth so being in 3rd position won't stop them from using melee. We've got archer koi next, which means armour damage will gets repaired. Which means Slade will stay up longer, same with the Shaman. 

Behind that is chaos battle mage with three ranged and piercing. Which is a pretty high damage card.

Taking up the lead is the giant alpine skink. Which I thought was an odd choice as that means they'll only be able to do damage when they're the last one standing. I think the logic my opponent had was that thier shield would protect them enough when attacking that this beefy unit should be able to finish off what's left. I however would have put him in second. 

So Lets see how the the battle unfolds. With all buffs and debuffs active their captain fellblade and battlemage are still the fastest units other than Lord Thanlor. And the shaman is the slowest. With the 15% miss thanks to blind I got a decent chance of dodging some attacks.

Partway through round one the combination of Throns from hitting endless ape and magic attacks has taken out slade. The skin walkers exacute does the final bit of damage. But not before he reduces my endless apes attack to one. Captain fellblade has also taken 3 damage thanks to thorns + amplify.

My endless ape is holding one, just barely. He did dodge a blow from the koi. I honestly didn't expect him to outlast Commander Slade. Thorns from hitting the arcane Skinwalker takes out Captain Fellblade. Amplify is doin't it's job.

The next to fall is my endless ape. The chaos battle mage with their impressive 3 damage does enough to defeat him. So now it's the Quillion's turn to be a tank.

A few more blows exchanged and the shaman is down(final blow to the arcane weaver). The Quillion took out the archer koi's armour, only for it to get it back. But with only two health  it goes down to Lord Thanalor at the start of the next round.

And a few more blows the battlemage goes down. They can't attack from the front row and since my only melee unit is already down I'm not taking any thorns damage.

Then the giant alpine skink finnally has a chance to attack and misses.

And is quickly taken out by my magic units who do not care about the shield ability.

My take away from this fight 
Unit line up is incredibly important. While it wouldn't have made the difference between victory and defeat if the battlemage and the skink had been swapped the battlemage would have gotten more attacks. 

It's also important to take damage like thorns into account as it really adds up when everyone has it from either a rule set or a summoner(tofu for example gives everyone thorns). A unit with two magic would have been much more effective then  Captain fellblade due to lasting longer. 

The last bit of advice, get a wide variety of cards since conditions like even stevens can make your go to cards not an option.

“Thank the gods, a safe room.” I collapsed onto the bed closest to the door. The soft blue glow of the wards protecting the room lit up the coarse stone walls and four narrow beds that filled the bulk of the rom. I took off my helmet and examined it. The magic had kept it from being dented, and probably stopped my head from being crushed by an ogre’s club. *I need to get that enchantment on the rest of my armour.*



“Coming into this labyrinth for this ridiculous quest was a terrible idea.” Javier hopped onto the bed farthest from the door. “Next time you suggest something this foolish because you’re bored, I’m hitting you with a sleep dart. “



“I always have sublime dreams when you use those.” I grinned back at her. Despite the ringing in my ears I was having fun. I enjoyed fighting monsters and probably enjoyed being in danger more than was healthy. My part-time job at a smithy was neither well-paying nor exciting. And there isn’t a real risk of dying. The magic of this particular labrythin meant that staying dead was rare. *But having nightmares about dying are less so.* “Besides you’d be cleaning linens at The Cottage inn, if you weren’t here.”

Javier crossed her arms and scowled, a look made far more potent by the exceedingly sharp knives she carried. Otherwise, she’d look like a human child, instead, she looked like a psychotic human child. I’d learned long ago to never call a halfling cute, even if they were. “If I get bitten by another Kraig cat, I might prefer that.”



Theodore, my sister, fellow human, and a sorceress leaned against the wall to catch her breath. Dark red mud coated her robe, the spit of a nasty frog demon. “If this job pans out, we can all retire. Personally, I’ll take fighting monsters over folding laundry or waiting tables. I’ve tried both.”



“Besides you’d miss us.” Caleb closed the door behind him, and seemed to meld into the shadows of the room. We weren’t sure what he was exactly, but we didn’t care. He fought, was stealthy, and his blows left wounds of shadows. “As for me, what other life could I embrace and use these powers for good? Most are afraid of me, but you three were not afraid.” He smiled, his pointed bright white teeth gleaming in the shadow of his countenance.

Theadora took off her robe, and it floated out of her hand and started glowing. The red much sloughed from the rich blue fabric beneath and splatted on the floor. “I’m glad—“

“You need to stop being boring!” A purple sphere appeared in the middle of the room, within was the face of Yeldenyall. “People are bored of watching you safely defeat things. Have some style will you!”

“Did they miss the bit where an ogre nearly took my head off!” I snapped. “Or when Theo almost gotten eaten by a frog demon?”

Yeldenyall turned to me. “Fans want your helmet on Jace. They like your hair and for some reason think you’re pretty.”

I rolled my eyes. “If they don’t want to see my helmet they can pay to make it invisible. And being matted with blood wouldn’t do my hair any good.”

The sphere made an angry sigh and turned to Javier. “And you, can’t you at least try to be cute? We could get you a pet, something furry and adorable. Really sell that dangerous but cuddly vibe.”

“Burn in hell, Yelden.” Javier made a rude gesture, and her pet snake hissed and rattled it’s tail.

“You first.” The sphere disappeared, and so did the runes on the wall. *That’s not good*

“Neither of you could play nice for five seconds?” Theadora tugged her partially cleaned robe from the air and put it on.

I shoved my helmet back on. “People like a rebel, don’t they?”

“And it should be entertaining,” Celeb added as he stepped back from the door.

A beak pierced through the wooden door, spraying splinters. I raised my shield and braced.

Another blow and the door exploded. The handle clanged as richochted from my shield into the wall. The beast beyond was bizarre. A bird head supported by a waist tall centipede body, only instead of slick insectoid legs it had hundreds if not thousands of tentacles. On its back was a massive pair of butterfly wings, and below the bird head was a pair of flexing black arms that looked like they should be on a gorilla.

“Someone needs to stop letting bored wizards play monster maker.” Theodore said, dark red energy making her glow as she prepared a spell.

“Well, they can’t be bored now.” Javier muttered.

“You agree to the rules?” Richard the fey said, his delicate, almost too long fingers tapping his briefcase. He smiled and it was like watching a statue move.

The abandoned warehouse stunk of oil and rust, but I’d been in worse. Slept in worse. “If the young me in anyway becomes aware of me I end up here. No telling lotto numbers or other future information, no grandparent paradoxes. Payment up front.” 

“Excellent. Good to know you listened.” They held out one hand. 

I took it and gasped. My sight became so much worse, my knees ached, my back ached, and everything felt weak and stiff. I hadn’t lived a healthy life. It wasn’t exactly surprising my body was falling apart after I paid for 25 years. One year of my future for every year into my past I went. “Now the goods.” *I have a smokers voice. I guess the magic assumes I keep the habit.* 

“Of course.” A doorway appeared, showing my childhood home. Me at five years old watching cartoons in the living room. My parents getting ready to leave. None of them know how fated this day is. In 24 minutes, they die. I saw them get shot, I’d see the bullet go through my father’s head and my two through my mother’s chest. I shove the memory aside. *Stay focused*

I crossed from stale oily air into the scent of fresh cut grass and barbeques. The potato is quickly shoved into the tail pipe, and I use a pair of pliers to undo the air valves on the tires. Damage that would slow them down but not ruin the car. 

“Listen Deedee, we’re going to the park but first we need to stop at the bank.” 

*Deedee.* no one had called me that in twenty-five years. I blinked back tears as I sprinted to the cafe next door, taking one of the outdoor seats, the furthest one. I remembered the warning I could hear them, but I couldn’t see. This had to work. *Please. Work.* I wanted a life with them in it. Where I cried at their funeral when they died at 85, not when I’m five. 

“How about this, we go to the bank, and if you’re patient, we’ll get ice cream after the park.” Mum, who liked ice cream just as much as me. She’d get whatever had the most chocolate. 

They buckled me in. Then climbed into the front, mum driving, dad playing with the radio. The memory played in my mind as clear as a movie. 

Car doors opening and closing, my heart in my throat as I watched my clock. Just ten minutes. I just needed to delay them ten minutes. 

“Why was there a potatoe in the tail pipe?” Mum. Of course she found it. But it took her 3 minutes. 

“Can we use it for supper tonight?” Of course dad would think of eating it. I smiled a little, even as my gut felt like it was full of angry beetles. 

“Do the tires look wrong to you?”

“Some fool kid undid the valves. Do you think Jerry would lend us his?”

“Course he would. He’s still got out weedwhacker.” 

I saw him, my dad walk by. He looked older than I remembered. More tired. Almost like he was sick. I wanted to hug him, tell him who I was, for him to call me Deedee again. But I just returned his friendly wave. Thirteen minutes had passed by the time he returned with a little air compressor in a red wagon. 

I did it. By now police would have the entire block shut down. They couldn’t be in a shoot-out if they were stuck here. 

“Do you want to take her to the park while I deal with this?” 

“YES!” Little me yelled. 

Mum and little me rounded the corner, and she waved at me. *Shit*

Back in the warehouse, and it’d gotten cold. “Did it work? Shouldn’t I have new memories?”

“It did work. But you did not listen quite well enough. I said you would stop existing as you are now.” He held out a pencil. “Try to take it.” 

Confused, I obliged. My hand went right through it. “Am I a ghost? Does that mean she’s dead?”

“Not a ghost, she is alive. But your livestream is no longer true in this reality. So, you are no longer a physical entity in this reality.” 

“What is her, my, life like now?”

“You made her a wonderful life.”

“And my parents?”

“Still alive and happily married.” 

“Really?”

“No. Your father died of cancer when you were ten, your mother died while giving birth a few months later. Both her and the unborn died.” 

I swallowed hard. That wasn’t the life I’d wanted for me. That wasn’t…. No. “So what was the point of all that? Of me spending 25 years of my life to change it? Did you know?”

“Of course not. Some might be able to predict the future but none a future that tries to alter the stream.” 

“What do I do now?”

Richard shrugged. “That is entirely a you problem. You wanted your parents to live past a point, and they did.”

Inkwell Prompt - The fated day lived twice.

There are times when I look at the rule set for a match and scratch my head trying to figure out how I'm going to make a decent strategy, other times I go "oh I got the cards for this to rock. This was one such match. 

This particular match was a brawl. I'm in the NFG-Legion 2 guild, and we do pretty good. I normally take fray 6, which means it's a lot like modern but with some caps on level. Here's the rule set

Aim true and armour up, with life, water and earth, and a pretty generous amount of mana. With my deck, and owning the OP Archon Elias Max Pruitt I went with him. For those not familiar Elais gives all friendly units with a melee attack +1 attack, and all units +1 armour. In addition to that already pretty great boon, he also has tactics. A unit either gets cleanse and repair, or armoured strike and piercing. Like I said, he's op, and is also in a badass electrical wheel chair. What's not to love about this guy?

Commander Slade the absolute awesome badass is an obvious choice. The five armour + 1 armour from Elais + 2 from the rule set means that he's got 8 armour. That means 8 attack with piercing, plus his normal attack of three.  And with his high speed, he'll be one of the first to attack. But I decided I wanted to beef that, and everyone on the team more. So the nimble brook explorer was brought in.

while they don't have an attack, their protect ability means everyone gets +2 armour. That means that Commander Slade has a whopping ten armour, that's ten attack with piercing. The problem here though, is that to keep that massive attack, Slade can't get hit. So on comes the Ulundin overseer.

Thanks to the large mana pool for this fight I could afford to bring this chonky boy on board. With 5(now 8) armour, and 12 health it takes a lot to bring the Ulundin overseer down. And thanks to his flanking ability Commander Slade can still deal out massive damage. To keep this going I recruited Meriput Magician with tank heal and a magic attack.

I also decided to hire the caravan guard for triage. Between these two, the +2 armour from nimblebrook explorer I felt like my team was going to take A LOT to take down.

After that I had seven mana to spend and I decided to go for the Rune Arcanist. Partly because 2 magic damage is nice, and because taking one max health from the opposing team seemed awesome.

There's our line up, and a hint of what I'll be facing. The one thing I that made me worried with this line up is that I had two units which had no attack, but considering how hard Slade would be hitting, I was okay with it.

With all buffs and debuffs in place this was how the battle began.(Why isn't debuff a word on here? Or did I spell it wrong?)

So as we can see lots of armour on my line, some folks real low in health on theirs. But they got Quora who is ridiculously strong. She def deserves her Epic rank. 

However as the fight went on I started feeling a lot more confident that things would work out. Slades first attack took out the skyspire leopard.

The second took out a bit of Quora's health and destroyed her armour. But I did have that self healing to contend with. But Slade's enfeeble does reduce her damage which helped me relax a bit.

By the end of round one I was confident I'd won the fight. Quora would go down to Slade, and while the stealth and snipe were hitting my back line, none of them were going after the key part of my strategy: the absolutely devastating attacks of Commander Slade.

By the end of round two it was just a matter of turns before everyone was done. After two more round of Commander taking out units in one attack, and everyone else helping as they can, the battle is won, with most of my units at full health and with some armour left.

Now an important question I ask myself is "What could have countered this?" 
Multiple units with corrosive ward would have reduced Slade's armour and thus his attack. Multiple units with snipe or sneak could have taken out my support units. Possibly Olivia of the Brook copying the healing and negative health abilities. Tofu giving everyone thorns would have reduced Slades armour quickly to, especially when paired with the Blackmoor elf, or anyone else with affliction making the thorns do 3 damage instead of two.

Exploring the Depths: A Journey Through Da Horde's Catacombs

Sooo, it feels a bit silly to be finally writing my intro post when i’ve been on hive for since February, but I just hit minnow so it's time to stop procrastinating. Even though glancing through my feed would get you a lot of information about me. But here we go.

I’m a huge nerd, which is why I enjoy Splinterlands so much. I also read, write and draw fantasy and sci-fi stuff. I love a good story, compelling characters and witty one liners, and anything that leaves me thinking. My favorite author is probably Sir Terry Pratchett most known for his discworld novels, as well as being an all around awesome person. His books while on the surface are goofy romps also have a lot of depth to them. He is one of the few authors whose made me laugh and cry in the span of about 15 minutes of reading. the other author that has that ability is Zachiery Pike, author of The dark profit saga which is another fantastic series.

My day job is in autism services, meaning that I work with kids and teens with autism. During the summer that means being at a daycamp with them and giving them whatever support they need to have a good time. Since Autism is a spectrum, what this looks like varies a lot. for some kids it means offering help in the bathroom or opening things in their lunch, for other kids it means adapting crafts and games so they can have fun with them, and other kids it just means being a listening ear becuase simply having the undivided attention of an adult is rare and amazing for them. In rare cases it can also mean intervening during self-injurious behaviour that some kiddos do when they're overstimulated, or when they become aggressive, or when they do something that isn't safe like running into the street. Overall it's an amazing job, and I love these kids but it can be draining both physically and emotionally.

So to make a long story short while I was bored one day some years ago I stumbled across a website called womplay. On this site playing games could earn you crypto and nfts on the WAXP chain. Which lead to me joining the discord that was connected to the sight, which lead me to meeting some cool folks including the awesome @cherrokee4life whose page you should def check out. He writes about splitnerlands in a way that is both educational and funny. He’s also got a node which you should vote for. 

i messed around on waxp quite a bit, going as far as making some nfts, but the low value of WAXP, life getting busy, and some personal stuff led to me getting burnt out and pretty much ignoring it for almost a year. Then my friend yup, you guessed it, @cherokee4life starts talking up hive. shows me soem of the cool stuff on here, and i’m like alright, lets try it. Two failed attempts at making an account later, and here I am, and it’s been awesome. Super freindly groups like Apais bee, and the folks on the hive discord, as well as some friend i’ve got that are already on hive helped me navigate the more technical aspects while also encouraging me to create.

<h1>Frontier Mode - The latest shiniest mode </h1>

If you've missed it Frontier mode is a new mode of playing splinterlands and is entirely free to play, but also has limited rewards. 

In Frontier mode the only rewards are a random foundation card every 5 wins, which caps out at 3 cards a day. No glint or sps is won, but one also does not need to invest in a spellbook or anything to have a  deck - that is taken care of by the campign mode. This mode has a bit of a story to it while teaching the basics of strategy to a new player.

<h2>Why is frontier mode so good for new players?</h2>

In frontier mode the deck is limited to foundation cards. This signifgantly limits the choices a player has. There is only one summoner per splinter and a limited number of unit cards per splinter. Unike modern which has 3-4 summoners as options per splinter, including those with the new bloodline mechanic and far more units as well. It makes it easier to build stragety due to the reduced options, as well as anticipating you're opponents strategy. 

This choice also means that no one whose new and trying out the game is going to end up fighting someone with tofu and caramel.  

This makes it easier for a new player to step into the waters and see how great splinterlands is without requiring them to learn everything. They can also have the joy of building a deck while playing without having to invest in building a deck that can make a lot of progress in modern.

Why the rewards matter so much</h2>
</center>




Both the way the rewards are given(every five wins) and the fact the rewards are foundation cards is key to keeping foundation new player friendly. By having it limited to just foundation cards, no sps no glint, it means it'll likely be mostly new players and players having fun. This means the matches should in theory be more equal. 

I also think that the every five wins is excellent becuase it keeps it means that staked sps doens't effect how quickly or not, you get rewards. As this new play is built to onboard new folks having the reward system entirely based on playing matches rather than staked sps is a very good call.

The development team has done a great job with this mode and I do hope it leads to new players joining the game. 


The final thing I've noticed while playing frontier is that it is easier to see when certain tactics really work.

For exemple in this fight I favourted speed. With the red summoner making everyone a little faster, then picking units with 2-3 speed(which is the high end of foundation cards.)

Due to my speed advantage i've taken out half my opponents units before they've have a chance to attack. This tactic is even more potent in Foundation as there is less variance in the speed of units so that +1 speed is even more potent. There is also no units with swiftness to even out the effect of the fire splinter summoner.

And with only three units left, and me with five, it wasn't much of a fight. The only unit of mine that went down was the tuanting tank. Rest in peace Beluroc Aegis. Until next time I need you to soak up damage anyway.

<h2>Some odd thing?</h2>
</center>


One odd thing is that there is at least one rule set which doens't really matter is heavy hitter. This rule set makes it so everyone does more damage to stunned units... but currently no foundation cards to stun. There is also the awkwardness of the earthquake ruleset when no one has flying. I'm sure in time units with these ablities will show up in foundation cards but right now the heavy hitter rule set doesn't effect game play at all. I'm sure we'll see some flying and stun units eventually but right now, those rule sets are kinda funny to me. 

What I've learned from playing Frontier ?

While there isn't one thing i would pinpoint as "I have learned this mechanic" since I had already been playing Splinterlands for several months before graduating from the academy(aka chapter 1 of the campiagn) and entering the frontier. However, my appreciation for certain mechanics and the way they can be used has significantly increased.

from what i've seen in the discord and other announcements the plan is to release packs which will include chances for black, gold and arcana foils. I'm not sure what the price will be but I personally think they should be cheaper than the Concalve arcana packs. There is also the raffel system that was talked about in an announcemnt a while back in which playing frontier will gain you entries and each account is limited to one card per week. Which I think could be pretty great as it favours the folks playing the format the most rather than those who have the most dec/sps to spend.

I also look froward to more chapters of the campaign. I really enjoyed what we've had so far and think it'll be cool to see what neat things they come up with next.

I love what frontier brings to splinterlands. A truly free to play mode, with an option to buy/sell if you've invested in a spell book.That someone can now get a very good taste of what splinterlands is like without having to invest is excellent for the future of splinterlands.  



Lets talk about frontier mode and why it could be awesome for onboarding.

Olivia of the brook is an epic Rebellion reward card, meaning that for 7,500 glint you have a chance of getting her there. Or she can be purchased of of the secondary market for 2.50 per chopy, so about ten dollars to get to level 2. 

She also has fabulous artwork.

A lot of splinterlands cards artwork is excellent and this is definately an example of this. But great artwork does not a great card make. So lets check out the stats.

So at level one I must admit, her stats are not awesome. It is not until level 2 when she gets the mimic skill that she shines. What does the mimic skill do you may ask? Well it means she can mimic the abilities of folks on the opposing team. Someone has inspiration, suddenly all your units are hitting a harder, someone has heal tank, suddenly Olivia is healing the tank to. In long fights this gets awesome.

<h1>When does it make the most sense to use her?</h1>

Oliva thrives in long, high mana fights where she could survive and copy many other abilities and become an incredibly powerful unit. With her measly four health there's a good chance anyone with sneak will target her.  
 This means if you don't plan, she may be one of the first to fall in a fight. For this reason I tend to pair her with someone with taunt, such as New Beluroc Aegis.

while expensive for the stats, the taunt ability makes them very useful and even vital when building a strategy around Olivia of the brook. And when paired with a tank healer they may well stay alive for several rounds despite drawing so much fire.

<h1>The best rule sets for her?</h1>

</center>

There's a few rulesets that make Oliva a much more appealing card. Fog of war, which eliminates snipe, sneak and stealth is huge. This means that there is no need for someone with tuant. This opens up a slot for a beefier unit such as the uladin overseer. Which even at level one has a massive 12 health. 

The second rule set she can thrive in is equalizer. With equalizer she has the same amount of health as the beefiest unit on the field, this means she won't be as vulnerable to sneak and if  you or the other player uses a card with a lot of health she may be in the game for a long while. 

That is unless the fog of war rule set is in place. 

The fog of war ruleset means that snipe, sneak and stealth are out of play, this means that Olivia can be safety nestled in the middle of the line up without being at risk. In this case I like putting someone real beefy in the front row like the Uladine overseer.

Explosive weaponry can be great fun with her as well since she has two attacks. She also can end up having a bit of an advantage in up close and personal as she is an option, but has magic which is rare.

Super sneak, which gives everyone sneak, is by far the worst rule set for her. Due to her low health she will inevitability go down very quickly.

I like pairing her with a triage healer such as the caravan guard as they will heal her if she has lost health which keeps her in the game that much longer. I also like having high health units between her and the front line to give her as much space to power up as possible.

My personal favorite is Bella as deflection field means she's protected from blast and damage from counter-spell or thornes. In addition, any other Ulund units I put between her and the front line have a good chance of staying up right longer thanks to Bella Ratajowlski giving them shield. Bella is also not to expensive at a 1.60 ish. (Though to get the use of level 2 Olivia it is closer to ten dollars as it would need to be level 2) The gold copy is also currently around 16 dollars which isn't exactly cheap.

If you have one, Eternal tofu is also an option. The +2 health increases survivability, and giving Olivia scavenger would be awesome.  Snare and thorns for everyone is also fun, even more so with the option of the Blackmoore Elf which gives amplify. It also gives the option of the endless ape as a tank. However, Tofu is one of the more expensive summoners costing close to 60 dollars on secondary. Which is more than a casual player like myself has just sitting around. Even if I would really love to own it, alas not quite an option for me.

Avina of the wolf is a so-so choice. The self-heal is nice, and speed is always good. However with Oliva's health, that means that she's only going to be getting 1 healt back each round. So unless it's a fog of war ruleset and you're giving that heal to the tank I don't really see this as a great summoner for this specific load out. They are currently a dollar ish on the market, so it would cost roughly 5 dollars to get them to level two and get the benefit of Oliva's mimic. Gold foil, which would get the benefit is about 15 dollars so not a cheap purchase.

Oh Elias Max Pruitt, an excellent summoner, so many very fun abilities. I love pairing him with Slade. The plus one armour and plus one melee attack is sweet. Armoured strike and piercing on someone who hits as hard as slade is def good fun. I rented this card several seasons back and am currently saving up for it. while I don't think it gives any specific benefit to Olivia, it is an overall awesome card. Also look at that kickass artwork! Currently Elias is about 23-25 dollars at level one on the secondary market which while expensive is def worth it for this fantastic card.

The last two options are Chuul and prunda, who are both 3 mana, and allow another splinter other than life. They don't have any abilities so they're not great but they aren't without merit. In a lower mana match 3 mana is helpful. But they aren't awesome. They are however quite cheap. Each one is only about 50 cents each. 

Personally, though, if you are in a low mana fight where the cost of these guys is an advantage it's probably not the right ruleset or man amount for Olivia. She thrives on long battles, which tend to be high mana battles.

The Equalizer ruleset is one of my favorites. With Equalizer everything has the same health as the highest unit. It's my favorite because it can get so very silly. Having a unit whose normally got 3 hp having 12 is ludicrous to me and it makes me happy.

## Now onto Unit choices!

The first thing to consider is health. If you put something beefy like the Ulundin Overseer, everyone on the field gets that much health and you've paid a 11 mana for it. I try to pick as low health units as possible. Worst case scenario it actually ends up being a short fight cause both me and my opponent picked the same strat and now the rule set doesn't matter as much.

That said abilities play a vital role. Having the wrong abilities can lose a fight just as easily as the right ones can win it.

Defensive abilities like shield, void armour, phase and lookout can make beefy units last even long.

Debuffs like silence, demoralize and headwind can slow down damage, and again, make your beefy units survive longer. If there's a rule set that limits unit types these can become even more potent.

For equalizer fights I also prefer to have everyone targeting the front line. Obviously this isn't possible with some rulesets. (like if you get aimless and going the distance) So things like sneak, aimless, and stealth are abilities I try to avoid unless everyone has sneak or stealth so the attacks are still all still hitting one person. That said giving one unit with aimless with Cryptic's tactic can result in a whole line up poisoned.

I also avoid things like Reckless and Burn BUT if your more of a risk taker than I, you could do something really potent and scary with reckless + pain-forged. Especially if you have a healer like Arachne with corrupted healing. It has a chance of backfiring but it also has a chance of making a unit with a massive attack that will devastate the rest of the group. That said, unless it's a very low mana match I would not bring in  Shock troopers or water diviner as their electrified ability will whittle you down without the benefit of triggering Painforged.

Units with counter attack abilities like Retaliate, Deflection, Return Fire, and Thorns can also end up doing a great deal of damage over the course of the fight. However, as these are all dependent on other factors I wouldn't prioritize them in a team build unless there is another rule set that limits unit types then the right type of counter could be higher priority. And if the rule set gives amplify, then this is even more true.

The other thing to keep in mind is healers. Triage, Tank Heal and Corrupted Healling all work on percentages. So if you can take a healer and/or a unit with affliction to stop healing can be huge. Also units with life leech can become ridiculous. Plus life leech helps keep the max hp higher which counters the downside of corrupted healing.

Abilities such as Snare could also be useful as flying helps dodge and when paired with Swiftness, and/or Blind can mean a lot of melee and ranged attacks miss.

Abilities like ,deathblow which only trigger when there is only one unit left, or Giant Killer, which only work on units costing ten mana or more, or Execute which only trigger when something has 1 or 2 health left, are less valuable in am equalizer fight. They don't have the downside of spreading damage like sneak and stealth but they aren't as awesome in these fights as they could be in others.

Always take a few seconds to look at the opponents favored strategy and consider the splinters available. If green and/or white are available and your opponent has played tofu in previous matches, expect tofu.

Hey Hive friends,

I am starting a drawing challenge this July called The Menagerie. It will run for 31 days, with one new drawing prompt each day. All the characters in this challenge are animals, and each one has a bit of story and personality to make it more fun and creative.

Each prompt will give you five simple details to guide your drawing. These are: 

🦊 the species
🎭 the pose or action
🧥 the outfit or accessories
🌱 the overall vibe/theme
🎒 and a must-have item

You can follow the prompt exactly, or use it as inspiration to create something in your own style. If you miss a few days, that is completely fine. You can jump back in anytime. There are no rules, no pressure, and no prizes. This challenge is just for fun and to keep us creating.

I tried to make characters that are unique, playful, and full of charm. You are free to redesign them however you like. Whether you draw in your usual style, try something new, or just sketch loosely, all styles are welcome.

If you are already part of Hive or just starting out, I hope you will join the challenge. Hive has been such a supportive place for artists, no matter your skill level. It is always interesting to see how different people interpret the same prompt. I will be posting the prompts daily using the tags #themenagerie and #31daysofdrawing, so feel free to follow along, share your art, or simply encourage others.

## Love at first sight?
      

Teeth normalish, no excessive hair where anyone can see it, and my overly long nails are painted with hello kitty characters. I am fit for the outside world. Jacket on for the cold, and the fortune cookie from last night in my pocket for good luck. It said I’d find love today. Not just love, but 'a love that would last until their last breath'. It seemed unlikely, but being open to the idea that something could happen would help, right? 

The chilly air and dark clouds promised more rain. The side walk was flooded, but my boots kept my feet dry. The steakhouse I was meeting my date at was only a few blocks away. My date. A first in months, and a first with a fellow were-wolf. Which meant if things went well, he wouldn’t be surprised when I tore up the basement every month. Unlike Jace. Jace who'd seen me change once and run screaming all the way across an ocean to France. 

No. I am not thinking about him. It’s been eight months. He couldn’t cope and no one’s broken this curse before. The relationship is gone. I already moved cities, it’s time to move on from him. Dalia set this date up to help me and I am not going to sabotage it by pinning for my ex. 

Alex stood outside the steak-house in business casual. Nice slacks, classy button up, and even a tie. Okay it was a clip on bow-tie but still. I’m in jeans and a windbreaker and didn’t even put on lipstick. My nails look awesome though.

“Hi,” I greet him in the most unoriginal way possible. “Alex, Right?”

“That’s me.” He smiles showing his big canines. “Cassandra right?” 

“Yup!” I sound way to eager. I can smell the wolf on him. Does that mean he can smell it on me? Is that something we could talk about or is it rude? And more importantly why was it dark inside the restaurant and no smell of steak? “Is it just me or is it looking rather closed?”

Alex stepped aside and flourished at the sign taped to the door.‘Flooding ruined the kitchen. Closed. Sorry.’ “There’s a food truck over in Beck’s park. It’s a short walk from here.”

“Sounds good..” I said, but a sad meow distracted me. In the dismal shelter of a mostly disintegrated cardboard box was a kitten. Small, mangy, and one ear oozed pus and its tiny ribs were visible through the soaked fur. “Oh that poor thing.” 

“You do not want to handle that thing. We can get fleas.” Alex glared down at it. 

“It’s been abandoned.” I knelt in front and it toddled toward me. 

“Just nature taking its course. The weak ones get culled.” 

“I’m not letting it get culled.” I took my jacket off and wrapped the cat in it. It wasn't that cold I would be fine without it. And it could get washed easy enough. The tiny thing purred like a jet engine. “We’ll get rid of those nasty fleas. I have shampoo at home that’ll get rid of those nasty bugs.” 

“That thing is disgusting, and it’s a cat.” 

“It just needs some love, and a bath.” Love. Could the fortune cookie have meant this cat and not…well romantic love? Not that I believed a bit of paper handed out at random could really tell my future. Could it? 

Alex grimaced at the word bath. “Let’s just get something eat.” 

“Lead the way to the food trucks.” I doubted any restaurant would let this little girl in. I couldn’t blame them, she was not hygienic. 

Alex gave the kitten one more disgusted look and lead the way through a well lit park. His wing tipped shoes splashed in the puddles. I rushed to keep up, trying to take in the flower beds and sculptures. Another little treasure in this town that I hadn’t known about. I kenw about places like this back home. Wonder if I'll ever live down the chicken incident so I can go home. Mom had gotten over it but having a trail of blood and feathers leading to me sleeping naked under the deck had made things really awkward. 

I smelled zesty and spicy Mexican before I saw it, along with the revoltingly appealing smell of hot-dogs and the promisingly sweat and oily scents of deep-fried everything. Around one more tree filled bend and we could see the trio of food trucks all in bright colours. Muncho Mexican, Henry’s hotdogs and Phil’s Fried Fomo. 

“You Alex!” The teenager running Mucho Mexican called. “We got fish tacos!” 

Cats liked fish. This could work. The little kitten looked like he hadn’t eaten in days. We ordered, and I got some plain fish for the kitty. 

“You realize that thing is not going to want to stay with you once it isn’t dying? Animals do not like people like us.” Alex sat at a picnic table. “As soon as it’s strong enough it will run away and be one more stray.” 

“I’ll deal with it if that happens.” I sat across from him, and put the kitty on table beside me. I held a little piece of fish out to it with my finger and giggled as its tongue tickled me. 

“You really aren’t accepting the reality of what you are.” He growled, as if my wanting a cat offended him. “You’re still acting human.”

“Most of the time I am,” I retorted, surprised at the growl in my own voice. “I spent most of my life human.” 

“And how are the humans in your life handling your changes?”

Well my fiancé left me, my mom freaked out but then apologized and has been awesome, my dad helped me design and build the wolf containment room in my basement, and my best friend revealed she’s a witch and has been helping me learn about this weird and wacky world I didn’t know existed until a year ago. After far too long a pause I said, “That’s none of your business.” 

“You need to spend more time around your own. You’re never going to be accepted with something like that. The only reason one of us should have a thing like that is for food.” He was serious, his eyes were hungry for it. “Though it’d barely be worth it.” 

Well done killing my appetite Alex. I stood up, cradling the Jacket wrapped kitten to my chest. It was asleep but woke up hissing. “I’m going home.” 

He stood up and blocked the way. He was drooling, actually drooling like a dog. He smelled so much less human now. “Give me the cat and you might have a chance, girl.” 

“Get lost!” I yelled. People were watching. I reached into my purse and grasped the comforting cylinder of pepper spray. 

His voice was a quiet growl. “If you ever want respect in the were-wolf community give me that cat.” 

“I said get lost. Go chew on a bone or roll on a dead fish.” I wasn’t going to take this from anyone. Human or were-wolf. 

He lunged. I sprayed him and watched as he fell to the ground clutching his face. The cat yowled. I gave him a swift kick to the family jewels and ran. I couldn't go home right away, he’ll follow.  I ran down Main Street, there was a 24 hour vet. Dalia's girlfriend worked there sometimes.

Inside was quiet, smelled sterile with a hint of animal and human fear. A dog show was playing on the a tv in the waiting room. The receptionist put down her coffee. “Are you alright miss?”

“Yes, I just, I saved this kitten from... A wild dog.” After all something between a human is a kind of dog isn’t it? “But they aren’t in good shape.” 

I showed her the mangy, scrawny kitten that had bits of fish on her face. 

The receptionist tutted. “Probably abandoned by the mother by how skinny it is.” The receptionist grabbed a clipboard and pen. “Fill this form out and a vet will be with you as soon as possible. With the right care that little cutie will be okay.” 

“Thank you.” I sat down and filled out the form. “You hear that little one, the doctors are going to make you all better.” 

She purred louder than a motorcycle.
