# How to Give a Great Research Talk
*Summary of Simon Peyton Jones' Lecture*

## Core Philosophy

- **Research is about communication** - talks are crucial dialogue, not just presenting information
- **Purpose**: Communicate a single key idea that gives the audience intuitive understanding, not to impress with cleverness or dump all knowledge
- Your audience is giving you their precious time - respect that gift

## What to Include

### Two Essential Elements

1. **Motivation** - What problem are you solving and why it matters
2. **One key idea** - Focus ruthlessly on this, prune everything else

### Key Strategies

- **Use examples first** - Move from specific to general, not the reverse
- **Deep dive over shallow breadth** - Better to go deep on one aspect than skim many topics
- Give audience some "technical meat" but make it accessible to non-specialists
- Assume 10% of audience knows your area well, 90% don't - engage everyone
- Make the key idea crystal clear - audience should be able to articulate it when leaving

## What to Avoid

### Content to Skip

- **Outline slides** at the beginning (wastes precious opening minutes)
- **Too much technical detail** (overwhelming slides that make audience feel stupid)
- **Related work sections** (save for Q&A, focus on your contribution)
- **Reading your slides** verbatim

### Behavioral Don'ts

- **Apologizing** for anything during the talk (travel delays, technical issues, etc.)
- **Pointing at laptop/screen** with your back to audience
- **Standing rigidly** behind podium throughout

## Delivery Style

### Energy and Engagement

- **Be enthusiastic** - If you're not excited, why should the audience be?
- **Move around** - Don't stay fixed behind podium
- **Make eye contact** - Engage with audience, identify friendly faces who nod
- Share the passion in your heart for the work

### Interaction

- **Welcome questions during the talk** - Creates valuable dialogue
- Look for questions and confusion in audience faces
- Repeat questions so everyone can hear
- If you don't know an answer, admit it honestly

## Practical Tips

### Preparation

- **Script your opening** - Have first few sentences memorized for confidence
- **Practice timing** - Do complete dry runs, preferably with friends
- **Plan escape routes** - Know what you can skip if running long
- Bring wireless presenter remote to avoid being tied to laptop

### During the Talk

- **Stop on time** - Audiences stop listening when they expect you to finish
- Use pauses effectively - silence is okay for regrouping
- If 80% of audience is lost, consider stopping and clarifying
- Adapt dynamically based on audience engagement

### Physical Considerations

- **Manage nerves** with deep breathing
- **Wireless microphone** preferred for movement
- Avoid laser pointer if you're anxious (amplifies hand shaking)

## Being a Good Audience Member

- **Ask questions early** when lost - don't wait until the end
- Help speakers by being engaged and responsive
- Be the person who asks clarifying questions others are afraid to ask

## The Bottom Line

Give talks that make audiences **glad they attended** by sharing genuine enthusiasm for ideas they can understand and take away. Focus on communication over demonstration of expertise.

How to Give a Great Research Talk (Sypnosis)

I know, everybody waits for the plugin system and I don't finish it... I'm so sorry about that. I have plenty of personal/health problems but I never give up and I continue to code my projects, but slowly. Why do I do this update? Because many small fixes and small features are here and I prefer to release this time to add them to every early adopter of SuperHive.

But before that...

## 2000 HP

SuperHive have reached 2000 HP! Thanks to all of your for your support. You're AWESOME, and I really want to push SuperHive to the next level, to the top speed!

I think we need to increase truth on this blockchain, and HP is one of the ways to do that. Also, I try to prepare some new introductions and explanations posts to give the best information about SuperHive project and the vision behind it.

So, about the update, what's new?

## Search

I finally include a small search engine into SuperHive. You can search any term in titles, text and tags. It's not a great feature, but it's done :)

## Tags are here

Yes, it's true! Now you can see the tags, and search in them, but you can also see the popular tags (only into the minimal theme at this time).

Also, when you click on a tag, a page will display with all your posts with selected tag. Some of you use tags to create categories, now, you can see them directly on your SuperHive blog.

## Administration

The SuperHive administration panel have a little make-up and have a new small dashboard when you connect.

For those who want settings, a new dedicated page with all settings is done. It's most easier and powerful to use.

We now have a theme selector too! You could see all theme before enable it!

Last thing, I fix some bugs in save function.

## For developers

If you have your SuperHive instance in development mode and an error is happening, a new tool will be spawned: [Whoops php debugger](https://github.com/zeuxisoo/php-slim-whoops).

The debug is easier and have some features to detect where is the error and how to fix it.  For users, if you have an error, just copy/paste it to the official Discord server and I can fix it in a better and quicker way!

## Other small changes

About Sitemap, I add all the pages (off-chain content) in sitemap to have a better SEO.

I've also add some data in the about page (check YOUR_URL/about). Tell me if you want to add some information.

I removed all unused classes/code in all PHP files of SuperHive. It's not much but it's more secure and faster display.

Last, I change the icons of minimal theme to TypIcons because IconMonstr stop its CSS font :(

How can ethical review for research be less painful for researchers and the reviewers?

It seems that this is an area of concern among academics. 

This is a quick review for [Ethics Review Boards for Research With Human Participants: Past, Present, and Future](https://doi.org/10.1177%2F1049732320972333) authored by Maya Peled-Raz, Shay S. Tzafrir, Guy Enosh, Yael Efron, Israel (Issi) Doron and published in Qualitative Health Research in 2021.

The paper articulated a set of recommendations for a better Ethics Review Boards for Research after speaking to 27 academics from nine countries in four continents.

These are the five recommendations: 
 
###### Recommendation 1: Work toward a transition from a review system to an advisory and validation system
- The idea here is to let the review process be perceived as a vehicle to promote research and not as impediment to research. This advisory stance would encourage researchers to more naturally strive to conduct research in an ethical fashion, which is the desired end goal. 


##### Recommendation 2: Focus on respectful research approach to participants, rather than “ethical” research
- The emphasis is shifted to whether the study honours its participant in the best possible way, vis-a-vis harping on whether the whether the research is “ethical”. The latter seems to be the current mode of operation, which causes frustrations among researchers.


##### Recommendation 3: Build a procedure that focuses on feedback, rather than the process itself.
- With the end goal set on respecting research participants, the application and review process should be made less arduous because only that matter. Only when the achievement of the desired goal of respecting participants are likely jeopardised should the more careful scrutiny be applied.
  

##### Recommendation 4: Recognise that a unified examination need not necessarily be standardised 
- Since study designs are often varied, flexibility in understanding the context of the study, participants, and the discipline and method involved is needed. A cookie-cutter approach to reviewing research may not be suitable for all studies.


##### Recommendation 5: Construct a feedback procedure in which researchers can respond to the review of their research
- Both researchers and the reviewers can both learn from the review process. Currently, the reviewers seldom hear what the researcher had to say. If the reviewing body can receive comments on the review process for the purposes of learning and self-improvement, reviewing of ethical applications would be a fruitful process for all.  


As academic members, it is likely that we sit on both sides of the camp. Certainly, applying for ethical approval is a normal affair to most of us. Some of us may even be called upon to review or sit on such a board. Having these five recommendations in mind, and actualising them can mean less pain and frustration for everyone.
