**The Beta Version 2.9 is now live on Android and iOS, featuring many new internal changes.**

This update is a significant refactor due to new requirements from Google and Apple, which necessitate a complete redesign of the app's internal structure. This is why we have spent weeks testing thoroughly to ensure everything operates smoothly. Let's start by reviewing all the changes.

#### 1. Device Compatibility

- Support for 16k memory devices (as required by app stores).

#### 2. Enhanced Encryption Flow

- Unlock directly with biometrics (fingerprint/face ID).

- Automatic fallback to PIN if biometrics fail or are disabled.

- First-time setup will prompt biometrics twice: once to decrypt the old system and once to re-encrypt in the new system.

#### 3. New Security Settings Page

- Option to enable/disable biometrics.

- Added a PIN lock mechanism: after 5 failed attempts, login is locked temporarily. Lock time increases with each failed attempt until the correct PIN is entered.

#### 4. Navigation Improvements

- Smoother screen transition animations.

- We added a swipe gesture from the edge to go back between screens.

#### 5. Camera & Gestures

- Better QR code scanning ability with the camera.

- Improved gesture handling (e.g., reordering swipes, deleting browser favorites).

#### 6. Cleanup & Performance

- Removal of unused assets.

- Improvements in the notifications feature.

- General UI/UX adjustments.

#### 7. Technical Upgrade

- A huge part of the refactor was the switch from bare React Native to Expo.

- These changes come with several advantages, like faster upgrades to new React Native versions and related libraries, easier compliance with new store requirements, and faster deployments. This means less time between new releases.

<div id="what-to-do"><h1>What to do after this update?</h1></div>

With this update, most things happen behind the scenes. **On your side, the key step is decrypting and re-encrypting your keys using your biometrics to enable the new encryption system. If you were already using your fingerprints, the App will ask for your biometrics twice (once to decrypt using the old system, once to reencrypt using the new one).** This can either be your FaceID or Fingerprints, which you can also disable if you want in the new Settings > Security screen. Once the migration is done, you will be able to access the App using only your biometrics or your PIN (instead of both).

How Surveillance Turns You Into a Puppet of the Internet

When social media platforms like Facebook and Orkut started it became like a fancy for everyone to put up their pictures and life stories on these platforms. While facebook succeeded,  I am not sure if Orkut still exists, or it's completely gone. It was fascinating, even I used it a lot. If someone visits my facebook profile they will see that in the beginning times I have too many of my pictures, almost of every occasion. But lately I have cut down a lot in the last couple of years. It's not that I have completely disconnected but it is very minimal, probably 3 to 4 stories in a year. Majorly I am using my account now for my Airbnb promotion, both Insta and Facebook. 

I feel that in the last few years putting up too much of our personal information on social media platforms have become risky. There are so many people who put up almost every single thing about their life. There is no right or wrong, it's just about how much one wants to be public about their life. As I grow old I want to be less and less visible publicly. I do click loads of pictures wherever I go and for every occasion, but I do not put up anything. Sometimes my friends tell me that if I am not putting them up on social media, why am I clicking so many pictures. Well, they are for my personal watch. Whenever I look at my past pictures I feel good about all those places that I have been to and spent all those precious moments with my family and friends.

When I visit some very fancy place then I like to put up a story, but otherwise on day to day basis I do not bother, and this is what amazes me the most, how some people live on it. They will put up pictures of what they are eating, wearing and everything. Isn't that putting out too much of your personal information out in public? When something is new, it's exciting but as time passes and we get so used to it then it kind of becomes boring, so similarly now I am bored with these platforms.

Some time back I read this article, that putting up live stories is the most harmful thing. When some one puts up live check-ins on their holidays then they are letting other people know that probably their home is empty and if someone is stalking you then they can take advantage of that. I personally feel that it is better to be safe with yourself then getting into trouble with this show business.

The question of 'money can't buy happiness or can it' is one that has two perspective to it based on experience on how we have handled money as human beings and what we have faced when we were broke and could not afford some certain things. There is a Proverbs that says "money is the root cause of all evil" this is true to some extent because there is the kind of money a person would have and they would purchase or engage in activities that they shouldn't have had an encounter with. For instance, the popular ritual people participate in because they are tired of poverty to have more money than their peers and to live a good life but the negative sides to these ritual performance is that when you take from the devil you have to give something in return, this good be shortage of life, sacrificing of humans and so. 

The Case for “Money Can’t Buy Happiness”, is a perspective of without money people can live their life without stress, all that is required is to be happy, fulfilled and contented with what they have. True happiness is not brought about by money but it's grows from true relationships, families, friendship, people ,love etc this can bring about purpose and meaning in a person's life steering from deep feelings that money cannot purchase.

Without money people can survive, I have experienced being broke for quite a number of times where I was not able to afford some certain things but I came to realize that when I have eaten and I am satisfied with what I ate every other thing is a counterfeit at that moment because that is the primary source that would help me to get what I need. The issue with having no money is that we adapt to our situations especially Nigerians who are so resilient that they do not allow anything to weigh them down.

Again, based on a movie I watched, the Love of money has made people to sacrifice their precious time all for chasing money. In the movie, there was this family that was contented with all they had while they were poor but once the man started associating with some certain friends and making good money, the love and unity within the family subsided. Before, the man would play with his kids, do their assignments and also help his wife in the kitchen, but when he got busy things change to the extent that he no longer had time for the family and even came back late from work.

However ,The Case for “Money Can Buy Happiness” is very relatable because when you have good money in your hands you are secured in a way. What I mean by this is that money offers freedom and security, take for instance you have health issues at a particular time, all you need to do is get a good hospital that would take care of your well-being and you would get better in no time but with no money you would have to endure and combat the sickness which could be dangerous.

Also, money can do every physical activity you want to do as a human being as long as you are ready to pay for the time and people services. For instance, you can use money to get help for house chores, go on vacations, beauty nice houses, take for class ticket, travel, learning, and so many other things.

If I was the last person on earth it would be scary and an entirely lonely experience,I have watched lots of movies where a natural disaster happened and they happened to be the last person on earth. One of such movies which I can't remember the one is one by Will Smith,who had to survive the world alone but lived in seclusion and utmost security.if I find myself in this situation,I would first go into hiding because the shock of not finding my fellow human around me is definitely going to scare the hell out of me.

Hopefully, we do not encounter such disaster because it would be so bad to lose every human on the planet Earth both bad or good people. But for the case of these prompts, if I find myself as the last person on Earth the first thing I would do is to find out the course of such disaster, and in turn protect myself because it could be a case of zombies, alien invasion, spiritual attack, and so on. From what we've seen so far in movies, the reasons why humans are cleared out from the world is due to attacks hence I would be entirely conscious of my environment in fear though but I would do my best to survive.


After I have ensured protection and security, I could then prepare myself to look around for survivors like me. Hopefully, I get to find others so that we can live life normally. It would be weird to be the only one alive in the whole world and this could affect the person mentally and psychological. 

Based on my experience from the movies I watched, some humans who are left behind on Earth can lose their minds because they are not used to being isolated from other people, others prove to be strong because they have to survive and find the cause of the entire situation. Some others, accept their faith in seclusion and hope to a spiritual being to find peace.

**Private security firms are the ones fighting crime on the frontline and making the difference in South Africa. Their services are improving as these firms become more profitable allowing them to invest in better equipment and having better training. Some of the firms have their own helicopters with many of their staff being ex military and ex police force. They are becoming elite  little armies controlling certain areas of the city.**



Living in Johannesburg you are always on alert when driving around as you just never know what to expect. Yesterday when driving to Centurion which is near Pretoria we missed a truck hijacking by a few minutes. Luckily we were not caught up in the action, but we were delayed by an hour as the police arrived and cordoned off the road.

The private security company in the area had resolved the problem with both the hijackers cars being riddled with bullets and making sure no one escaped which is what we expect to see. The truck had been stopped in the middle of the road and was in the process of being stolen when security arrived on the scene. Eventually a make shift detour was created with all the cars having to drive over a grass bank creating another route. When we returned back via the same route as there was no other route out of the area the forensics were on the scene with their little yellow blocks highlighting the evidence. The bodies had all been removed along with the vehicles and you would be none the wiser what had taken place a short while previously.

I was not tempted to take photographs as trust me it was not appropriate with the dead criminals lying everywhere. The good news is the end result as the only way the country is going to be safer is by eliminating the criminal element permanently. This is the harsh reality of them versus us and we have to win this battle. When you grow up in this type of society human life has no or little value and you are not affected by what you see. This is obviously not normal as most people would be shocked and upset seeing death yet once you have seen so much already it has little or no effect.

The police are not the ones curbing the crime and this is all down to the private security firms that are employed by their clients which is the public. In this case the security company would have been employed by the businesses in the area and they proved their value.

Earlier in the week there was a report that a high percentage of the violent crime committed in Johannesburg is responsible by 442 king pins. The cash in transit crimes which still are happening are not as regular as many of the organised crime gangs have already been wiped out. This is the security industry working together without the police who for some reason are never involved when the take down takes place. The private security firms are the ones making the difference and there are 3 x as many private security personnel than police in South Africa.

If the police know who the kingpins are then why have they not taken action and removed them from society? Surely you remove the head of the snake if you know who the people are and try and protect your citizens. Many believe that the police and the kingpins are one and the same as their inaction shows who is being paid off and where their loyalties lie.

It’s been several months since Vector made its debut. I was able to get hold of JSKitty, the developer behind the budding privacy-centric messaging app. Join me in this exclusive interview as I pick his brain on the progress of the app, upcoming upgrades, and the general regulatory landscape for privacy projects.

**A lot has changed since the launch in February. Could you provide an update on Vector’s progress? Are you on track to meet your initial milestones, and what is the biggest unforeseen challenge you’ve encountered?**

We’re completely on track, so far! By the end of the year, I’m aiming to have full and stable encrypted Group Chats, significant customisation upgrades (custom emojis, stickers, gifs, etc), and ideally, smoothed cross-OS support.

I’d say the biggest challenge has been cross-OS support; it is incredibly difficult, especially as the solo per-platform developer, to ensure Vector is stable and fully functional on every single OS. It’s a work in progress, but over time, I hope to get the experience smooth and equal on every platform.

**One of your early goals was to see Vector become the new Telegram. Do you think your app has the potential to compete against the likes of Telegram? Is Vector really the new Telegram?**

As long as we keep hitting feature goals, catching up slowly to Telegram and Discord’s feature set, I firmly believe we can become real competition. As it stands, Vector is still deeply in the Beta phase, and will be for another year at minimum. So right now, I would absolutely not compare us to Telegram (aside from the stance of Privacy — where Vector far exceeds it already), but with time, sweat and blood, I’m determined to create solid competition against the mainstream giants.

**Telegram is known for its channel and group features, which have become central to many communities. How does Vector’s architecture handle large-scale, decentralized group chats without sacrificing performance or privacy?**

Vector Encrypted Group Chats will be based on the MLS Protocol, which scales logarithmically at O (log n) with full ratchet-based encryption. In short, Vector Groups in the future will be able to scale to thousands of members in individual groups, without sacrificing encryption.

Of course, encryption at that scale makes less sense, since the more members you add, the more likely someone will ‘snitch’ — but Vector will offer that scalability regardless, because it’s better to build for the future than to limit our users.

**Regulation is a growing concern for all tech platforms. How is the Vector team preparing for potential legislative action, such as the EARN IT Act or similar bills, that could mandate backdoors or data access?**

Regulations are one of the scariest topics in the privacy sector, especially with how fast-moving it is. Europe, the UK, the US, and a series of other countries all have their own looming legislation, to the extent that I truly cannot keep up with them. That said, my goal will never change.

Vector’s source will always remain open, and the protocol, by design, cannot be censored. Even in the case of “app distribution-level” state censorship, Vector download can remain accessible to those who would otherwise be blocked from it.

When the question comes to the EU’s “screen scanning” regulation called Chat Control, I do not yet have an answer. Sadly, this is the harshest regulation I have seen, and I’m grinding my brain on solutions. Time will tell how we work around the regime.

**Many privacy-focused apps struggle with user adoption due to a perceived lack of features compared to centralized services. What is your strategy for adding compelling features that will attract a wider user base without compromising the core privacy principles?**

I completely agree on that struggle, as someone who has “bounced around” more than a dozen privacy chat apps, and always been frustrated at the lack of simple UX and features. I’m keeping the “fun, fulfilling” sense of the app in mind.

Our last upgrades there were for the Profile Expansion and Badge System, with the next upgrade being Custom Emojis, stickers and gifs — Bots — Mini-apps, and more.

**Looking ahead, what is your team’s top development priority for the next six months? Is it user experience, enhanced security features, or something else entirely?**

The next 6 months are solidly on the roadmap for stability, UX, and features. Vector still has far to go to become fully stable, and as such, it’s the highest priority. As Vector feels smooth enough, we add more features, rinse and repeat.

**What is your personal vision for the future of private communication? Do you believe fully decentralized, encrypted messengers like Vector will eventually replace mainstream, centralized platforms?**

My goal is, in an ideal world, a full quiet replacement. If Vector could be made as “simple,” if not more simple than traditional platforms, while maintaining its core security values, then we’d be primed in the market to keep growing.

In reality, and sadly, humanity fundamentally never quite seems to learn these lessons, so most likely, there will always be a handful of “giants” that control the global communication market. If Vector can take even a slice of that and provide true safety to the families and friends that use it, then I am happy enough, and my task is done.

**From a monetization perspective, how does the team plan to sustain development and server costs without resorting to ads or selling user data?**

Fortunately, Vector’s design means that we have minimal expenses. There are over a thousand community Nostr Relays, and dozens of media servers.

We are contemplating further funding for the purpose of marketing and community growth, but aside from that, I am not too concerned about costs. If the time came that funding was necessary, there are foundational funds explicitly designed for apps like Vector that would likely grant us funding, such as FUTO, the OpenSats Nostr Fund, and further ‘Privacy Advocate Funds’.
