This book is the 2nd out of 4 in the "Uglies Trilogy"  and yes I know I wrote "4" and then "trilogy" and this is because the original setup was a trilogy and then the author decided that he could milk some more money out of this thing and wrote another one that not many people actually read.   

If you read *Uglies* you already know that the other sort of people called "Pretties" are constantly referenced in the book and they are not initially seen as enemies, they are just the more privileged portion of society and every member of society is entitled to join them and become beautiful and carefree once they hit the ripe age of 16.

This is a sci-fi dystopian series set at some point in the not too distant future where mankind has already fallen and this is the "new order" of things.   People are physically altered at the age of 16 to be unobtainably perfect on their 16th birthday at which point they are taken to "Pretty Island" where they live lives of opulance and are separated from the rest of society.  They do not age quickly, they have flawless skin, they have perfect teeth, they have perfect height and body proportions, and they have an easy life that is just filled with partying and even electronic walls that will provide them with almost anything they ask for just by saying the words.  There are parties every day and fireworks constantly fill the sky in a never-ending party.  No one is ever sick and nobody is capable of getting injured for the most part since a risk-free society has been designed for them.

Sounds pretty great right?  Well, all is not what it seems as it is discovered by "Tally", who was the main character in *Uglies* as well as the other book, that this society isn't actually meant to be for the benefit of the people in it.   In that regard the entire series is kind of a reflection of government that exists now and how many have the opinion of government existing only to placate the plebeians into believing that the government has their best interests at heart while in the meantime this is all just a type of societal control.

Tally was a reluctant addition to the Pretties society and was added at the end of *Uglies* where the society that her and others had built outside of the confines of government control was raided and destroyed and she was taken captive.  She successfully convinced the overlords that she was on their side all along and therefore would like to take her rightful place in their ranks - and of course the overlords give her the wish because the story cannot progress if they do not do so.

A movie version of *Uglies* was made and it was probably the intention that this would become the next big thing but the movie performed very badly and the next 2 films were never made because I guess the studios didn't relish the idea of losing tens of millions of dollars more on making another one.   I DL'd the film and was only able to make it through about 20 minutes of it.  It's really bad.

Now let me get into the good and bad of *Pretties.*  

<h3> Readability </h3> 

This is one of the best aspects of this book.  The chapters are broken down into very manageable length and the story isn't very complicated so it is very easy to follow.   I was able to just scan a lot of paragraphs rather than read all of them because Scott Westerfeld writes in a very predictable fashion where only the dialogue in the beginning and ending of each paragraph is actually important towards the story at all.  The rest is a normally some flowery description of the surroundings or emotions that are not so essential if you like to speed-read.  

This is good because I never really felt like the story was losing me.  It gets straight to the point and the plot flows really well.   There are no unnecessary side-characters and the ones we do get to meet are for the most part, interesting 

<h3> Length </h3>

It may have been for the sake of being able to sell 3 books instead of one, but each of the books is between 3 and 4-hundred pages.  This is something I find very manageable and not like I am about to undertake some sort of "Gone with the Wind" epic undertaking.   

Even when the story starts to be a bit ho-hum it doesn't take very long before it gets moving again.  I don't feel like there is much in the way of unnecessary information in any of the story for the sake of simply making it longer




<h3> Tweener storyline </h3> 

This can be seen as a good or a bad thing depending on your outlook and more importantly, your age.   

The story has teenagers in the forefront and the people who are their minders or overlords are all adults who seem to just be completely incompetent.   This kind of ruined the overall story for me because you have to continually ask yourself how it would be possible for this complicated society could possibly have been formed in the first place if a few kids are able to cause so much trouble in what appears to be a rather effortless manor.  

If you are an anxiety-ridden teenager with a rebellious streak, you will probably be cheering the entire way through, but for me, and adult, I tend to look at the story from a logical standpoint and this is where it can be a bit frustrating as we see our heroine succeed with her hair-brained ideas time and time again.  

<h3> It's essentially the first story told again </h3>

These books were clearly written with a saga being created in mind.   They read like a film and each is self-contained in the individual titles.  I have no doubt that the next volume, *Specials*, is going to be the same way.  

We are following a path in this story that plays out like a movie that isn't overly concerned with plausibility and it is evident that Scott Westerfeld isn't either.  It seems as though he had a broad idea or formula, and he forces the end result by a series of steps in between almost like he had a 1 page storyboard and then made it happen in order to make a near 400-page book.  While the characters are a bit older than the first book and a few of them are no longer there, the story is essentially *exactly the same* as the first book.

I do not have access to most physical versions of any book, let alone something as obscure as this one.  So I loaded it up on my trusty second-generation Kindle and Nadi (my dog) is just as terrified of it as she is of anything else I try to lean on her.  

Say what you will about the planned obsolescence of today's electronics:  This is not the case with my more than 20 year old Kindle.   That thing has been through the ringer and is still going strong.

Pretties is a book that isn't going to appeal to everyone but I was able to blaze through it in just a couple of days because even though it isn't tremendous writing and certainly isn't anything momentous, new, or unique, it is easy to consume.  If you like dystopian tales with easy-to-understand storylines that come and you quickly and get the job done, *Pretties* actually does a pretty good job.   

If you read the first book you will see from a long ways off how this one is going to end, with a few twists built in.  For the most part it is a wildly unrealistic story but it is still a dystopian story, and those are my favorite kind of stories and perhaps that is why I stuck it through.  Well, that and the fact that I currently have 4 broken bones in my body and I don't have a wide variety of activities that are available to me at the moment.  

If you can get it for free or borrow it from a library then I would recommend it.  I wouldn't spend any money on it though and there is no reason to add it to your permanent library unless you are 14 years old.   

Overall I would give it a 6.5 out of 10.

Book Review: "Pretties" by Scott Westerfeld

Eve Vanguard is an FPS game that is currently in development by CCP Games. Being an Eve Online player, I got a limited-time free trial to test out the game during an event. While in Eve Online, battles are fought in space, in Eve Vanguard, they are fought on the ground.  

 

It should not be any shock to anyone that I'm not a huge FPS fan. While I do enjoy games that are not PvP with guns. In general, being on a battlefield and fighting other players over possible objectives. Never really my thing. I, however, wanted to check this one out anyway.  

 

 

My first impression of the game within my first two hours of playing was not great. I was not having any fun and almost did not return to it. In that time, I did the basic tutorial that felt like it was tuned a little too hard. I then ended up on a planet with other players, where I kept getting camped and ganked. So, I was kind of over it at first.

Before any deployment. You get to pick your gun loadout and the mods (chipsets) that are in the gun. The lower-tier chipsets have negative effects on them. The higher-tier ones not only offer better stats but are void of many of the negative effects, like a lower gun RPM or dealing less damage.

With every deployment to a planet. They give you this space view before you drop down into a pod and land. I kind of wish this cut scene could be skipped. I understand that this is their way of showing you something while there is a loading screen going on.  

 

While at first it did create some excitement in me for wanting to play the game. The sounds and the moments before I landed ended on a planet. Almost puts me in a certain mood for combat with NPCs and other players. I could see myself getting rather bored with it after a while.

The tutorial started decently, and as you would expect. The game is just giving you the basic rundown of some of the things. Mind you, a lot of stuff that you do outside of being on a planet was rather lacking in information. With this game not even being out yet in “early access,” I can give a bit of a break on that front.  

 

At the end of the tutorial, you are just left feeling overwhelmed. While you are still trying to grasp the basics of the game. There are just endless waves of NPCS trying to kill you. If you get killed, you have to run all the way back from the start.  

 

That feeling of just being way too overwhelmed and not enough breathing room is also an issue in a select small number of events you end up doing on planets as well. As if it’s not enough to run into a group of other players that will kill you on sight. If you are solo, sometimes the NPCs coming in from a bunch of different events near you are just too much. Till the point you have run out of bullets and are not even given enough time to loot corpses for more or to craft any.

The different environments in the game were amazing to look at. Lots of just society has fallen. You are just trying to gather needed resources from what is left. Everything is torn apart, destroyed, and there are even some environmental traps to avoid as well.

That was perhaps the thing I enjoyed the most. Just looking at the view. I know that is kind of odd in a FPS game. I, however, am not an FPS kind of gamer. So, for me, other elements of the game stand out a lot more.

While there were only a couple of planets at the time of playing. It was just fun checking out different areas. Sometimes I'd go to one planet to run an assignment. Other times, I'd be going to another planet as I needed the ores you could only mine on them to craft a new gun.  

 

When you are on a planet, the game works on a clone system. You can turn in 50 biomass to a clone bank to buy another clone. Once you run out of clones, not only are you done, but you lose everything on you. Including the gun and the mods (chipsets) you had on it. A harsh lesson to learn early on.  

 

 

The most frustrating thing about this game, as it stands, is just trying to work out the different missions on a given planet. It’s something I've brought up elsewhere when talking about the event that was going on for a couple of weeks.

While many of them are quite simple. Like accessing a pod and just waiting for the code to open it for loot to decrypt. On long with other types, where you are just clicking on five different keys as they pop up. Many are not like that at all.  

 

The ones where you need to craft an item to use to interact with the objects scattered across the map come to mind. You might need an item drop that is not anywhere near any of those objective points. If you have yet to come across it or recall where or even how to get that item needed for crafting. You just waste a lot of time running around near objective points looking for what you need, and it’s not even there.  

 

There is also nothing like getting the item you needed. Crafting the object needed to interact with the object. Then getting to that object just to get killed. Now I understand that it is part of the game, and thus why I just don’t care for FPS like this in general.  

 

Sure, there are banks on the map that you can go to and deposit items in. That is a way of keeping them safe. You could also, if you know the type of mission you are doing, deploy with the needed crafted items right away.

I also found myself having to open the main map way too much. For a waypoint for an objective you're going after, you must be on top of it. While you can pull up a mini map that shows your general area. There was still far too much having to consult the main map, where you don’t see any hostiles incoming to finish you off.  

 

As you can see, there is also a lot going on regarding the map. So, I'm at least thankful you get a larger map to see all the different sites you can run. I would rather not have to open it up when trying to get to an objective and find myself having to take a major detour, as the path forward was in fact a dead-end, or is taking me in a direction I know is not toward where I want to be going.

I also kind of enjoy the fact that you might be on a planet not even doing any objectives on it. At one point, I stopped to mine some needed resources so I could do some crafting when I'm off the planet.  

 

I would even sometimes deploy to a planet knowing it dropped some item I needed. I’d avoid any players if I could. Along with NPCs, as to why waste bullets when you don’t need to? Get what I needed and then spawn the beacon to leave.  

 

 

That, for me, is more of where my interest in a game like this would end up being. The PvE side, and from my understanding, there is going to be more PvE stuff added at some point. Sounds like maybe even some PvE planets.

As far as the crafting goes. It’s basic, but for this kind of game, I feel that's how it should be. You can buy limited one-time blueprints. Then, with materials you have farmed on the different planets, you craft an item. The items you craft can either be guns or chipsets.  

 

It seems like there is a way to get permanent blueprints as well. This feels like an area I could see them expanding on a bit in the future. For now, it was good enough to at least get you some needed items. While also giving you a reason to go out and grind for materials.

I started not liking this game. After playing it for a few hours, and not solo. It started to grow on me quite a lot. It's clear that while this game can be played solo, it’s made more for group play.

If I was the last person on earth it would be scary and an entirely lonely experience,I have watched lots of movies where a natural disaster happened and they happened to be the last person on earth. One of such movies which I can't remember the one is one by Will Smith,who had to survive the world alone but lived in seclusion and utmost security.if I find myself in this situation,I would first go into hiding because the shock of not finding my fellow human around me is definitely going to scare the hell out of me.

Hopefully, we do not encounter such disaster because it would be so bad to lose every human on the planet Earth both bad or good people. But for the case of these prompts, if I find myself as the last person on Earth the first thing I would do is to find out the course of such disaster, and in turn protect myself because it could be a case of zombies, alien invasion, spiritual attack, and so on. From what we've seen so far in movies, the reasons why humans are cleared out from the world is due to attacks hence I would be entirely conscious of my environment in fear though but I would do my best to survive.


After I have ensured protection and security, I could then prepare myself to look around for survivors like me. Hopefully, I get to find others so that we can live life normally. It would be weird to be the only one alive in the whole world and this could affect the person mentally and psychological. 

Based on my experience from the movies I watched, some humans who are left behind on Earth can lose their minds because they are not used to being isolated from other people, others prove to be strong because they have to survive and find the cause of the entire situation. Some others, accept their faith in seclusion and hope to a spiritual being to find peace.
