I haven't been terribly mobile lately so I don't get around very much.   This probably delights Nadi, my dog, because in the past I would go on walks that were too long for her little legs but as of yet anyway, I don't have that sort of endurance because of the nagging injury in my shoulder and ribs.  These things take time.

But I have been walking a bit and spending more time at the beach and hanging around with my friends in local places for coffees or beers and while Nadi doesn't exactly get a lot done at these places, I am pretty sure that she prefers to go with me rather than sit at home on her own.

One place that I really enjoy taking her is a beach bar/cafe called Maia.  She enjoys the beach views and breeze and I enjoy the attention that Nadi brings to our table in the form of all the staff and many of the normally very attractive people that hang out here.   I am not the only person who brings their dogs here though and since Nadi has an intense hatred of almost all other 4-legged creatures, I have to keep her on a chair.   We don't need any doggy fights breaking out.

Next up is a outdoor pub called Game On.  It is not on the beach but close enough that you pay a premium for beverages here.  I don't really care for most of the sports that we have access to in our time zone but I do like that the staff are cool with her being here and they really enjoy giving her little pre-approved snacks in exchange for the handful of tricks that Nadi can do.   The staff are endlessly entertained by having Nadi do hi-five, shake, speak, and a special trick called "kisses."

Another place I like to take her to is a spot called *Sleepy Dog* and one of the main reasons we go there is because the resident dog, whose name is "Sleepy," is one of the only dogs in the entire world that Nadi will tolerate.  I wouldn't say they are friends but they seem to ignore one another equally and that's about the best you can hope to get from Nadi when it comes to her other-doggy-relationships.   Nadi will sit on the floor by choice, she is allowed on the chairs here but I think she enjoys the cool pavement more than the insulated chair cushions.

Much to Nadi's disappointment I have started to eat somewhat healthy again.   During the injury recovery period I was eating just whatever food but since this has resulted in me gaining a lot of weight in the past I decided to nip that in the bud before it becomes a problem.   During my 6 weeks of near complete inactivity I have lost nearly 5kg or over 10 lbs.   I suppose this is due to muscle mass loss to some degree but I also discovered that during a period when your body is repairing bones, a body can burn up to 30% more calories than it normally would.   I suppose this is one of the only benefits of having broken ribs.

Nadi is at this exact moment in a place that she hates more than any other, getting a haircut.  She needs it badly but we only waited this long because my own discomfort was a bit more of a priority in the past over a month.   She should be getting out of there soon and I will as I always do, shower her with attention and plenty of treats!

I want to start out by saying that I really like living in Vietnam and mostly I really enjoy most of what comes along with it.  That doesn't, however, mean that I have to agree with everything that takes place here.

I am sure that this issue happens all over the world but I notice it every single day in my own walks to and from wherever I am going.  

The sidewalks belong to the city, not to the property that is next to it, but often, property owners don't agree with this or simply do not care and will take over that area with tables, plants, trash bins, and of course parking for motorbikes.

This isn't a particularly busy part of town yet pedestrians are force to walk in the street and then get beeped at by cars for being in "their space" when "my space" is intentionally blocked by inconsiderate and selfish people.  

The bikes could be parked in a way that would allow people to still use the sidewalk and honestly, this is a pretty darn nice sidewalk as well.   Yet nobody ever does anything about it.  

Other businesses will intentionally put heavy potted plants or some sort of barricade down so that people cannot walk in front of their place.   This isn't legal but nobody ever does anything about it.   One of the frustrating things about living in Vietnam is that it seems that unless you are inside of your own yard, apartment, or house, someone is always trying to take what little bit of space that you have at the time, away from you.

This is not a new gripe nor is it specific to where I live in the country.  Virtually every pedestrian walkway has been turned into a motorbike parking lot and those which haven't, have been taken over by various businesses who illegally set up sitting areas and then block the pedestrians from walking through.  Your only choice at this point is to walk in the street.  

I have noticed that at certain places in the country, normally where rich people live or where there are government buildings, that motorbike parking is banned and there is a guy in a green uniform ready to blow a whistle at you if you so much as approach said area.   

of course if they did ban it we have to ask the question about where are the bikes going to go?   I mean, they have to go somewhere, right?   I am reminded of other places in the world where there are these wonderful things called "parking lots" that I guess this part of the world hasn't heard of yet.  It really does clean things up even if it does mean that the person driving the bike has to walk a few blocks.  I would love to see this implemented but I know that is just a pipe dream on my part.   

I know that my own property puts these very heavy cement benches and tables in front of our building on the public parking lot but the reason why they do this is because it would become a motorbike parking lot just like everywhere else if they did not.  It's kind of funny and I'll need to remember to take a photo of it later because on both sides of my apartment that is exactly what has happened, it's just row after row after row of bikes and I'm looking around thinking "where are all the people that own these things?"   I mean, none of the businesses around here are busy, so where are the owners?

Just so you know the title is not a type.   We have silly and sometimes borderline offensive fake names in the Hash House Harriers and Sloppy Rod is just one of our members Hash Name.  Hash Names are important.  Very few of the people that are in the Hash do I actually know their real names and that is the way it was meant to be.  If you become good enough friends with someone outside of the Hash you can use their real name but it is actually considered taboo to use a person's real name unless they haven't yet been given a Hash name, then the objective should be to get them a Hash Name.  It's a major part of stuff here.

Now that I got that out of the way let's look at last week's trail

This location is always a winner no matter where we start on it because it has a very large water feature.   Everyone likes those.   The only issue is that this is "sort of" a national park and every now and then a person who is new to the "force" will take some issue with us all running in a group and shouting even though we are very polite to other visitors and we clean up trash while we are there.  

One time some overzealous youth with a uniform came over to our Hash circle and tried to tell us that it was not legal to drink beer out of a cooler in the park, which is nonsense because everyone does that and there are restaurants and shops there that sell you exactly that.  

He was just being a pain in the ass because he has a uniform and a tiny bit of authority.   Perhaps he was looking for a cash handout or was honing his skills at asking for bribes with foreigners.  He wasn't counting on one of the people that was in attendance at that particular moment being related to  a high ranking police office and well, his attitude changed after that phone call.

The lake isn't the cleanest looking thing but it is pretty large and that is what makes it fun.  The elevation all around it is also pretty nice but you do need to be a bit careful how far you wander off the path because just a bit to the east of it is military land and well, we were aware of this but a great way to get into a load of trouble is to wander intentionally or accidentally onto military land.  We didn't do that.

This is one of those runs where we got lucky and it didn't rain.  It is now the rainy time  of year so we have to accept that some of these runs are going to get rained on.  In all the years that we have been doing this we have NEVER been rained out and i'll be damned if it going to happen on my watch.  if it does rain cats and dogs you just get wet.  Accept it and move on.   For anyone joining us from outside though just bring some dry clothes in a somewhat water-tight bag to change into afterwards.  We have dry spots and vehicles to store these bags in during the run.  at the minimum you should bring a dry jacket for the ride home.   It makes a huge difference.   It wasn't a factor this time though because the sky gods had mercy on us!

Sometimes, there's nothing wrong with feeling FOMO (fear of missing out) for something positive. Especially if you have a fun group to do anything with, including trying new things. That's what happens when you have friends on the same wavelength. I'm lucky to have them. We often hang out together at the end of our shifts, usually once a month. This is because we don't work office hours, so we rarely get to meet or go on vacation together. When the opportunity arises, even for a short time like after work, we will do it. And this time we went to a bowling alley. Currently, the bowling alley at that place has become popular because it is close to office buildings. So it's not difficult to reach the place on weekdays.

So here we are...

To be honest, I've never been bowling before. So when the opportunity arose for me to go there with a group of fun people, it was a must-see. This bowling alley is located inside Agora Mall. Called Spin City, this bowling alley is a favorite because it's located in an office area. Office workers are happy to stop by after work. Especially if the traffic is congested, it's a fun activity while waiting for the roads to clear.

For one game, we rented two bowling laps, as there were seven of us, so we needed two, for IDR 85,000 per person. That price included special bowling socks and shoes. It was my first time, so I was excited. This was definitely a new and meaningful experience for me.

There was a funny incident when I threw my first ball. I was so excited that I ran over the line. As a result, I slipped and landed in the lap. It was embarrassing, but since I was with my friends, it didn't matter. It's true that first experiences are the most defining. You know, when my bowling pins were down in one throw, it was an incredible feeling. Ever since then, I've felt like I had to go back.

Our team was divided into two teams: a men's team and a women's team. And here are my team's results. Even though it was our first time playing, our score wasn't too bad. It was pretty good. We just need to practice as much as possible to get straights more often.

This is an activity that will make you addicted. Since that day, we've been constantly looking for time to go bowling again. Coincidentally, some of the group used to be bowlers, so we can consider it our way of keeping these former bowlers in the loop. Paying what we paid for this exciting game certainly wasn't a bad thing.

Bowling After Work with Co-Work

*A quiet morning spent cycling.*

I remember this neighborhood being quite memorable for me, because back in elementary school, my friends and I often came here to play soccer. We were all girls and had no talent for soccer, but we loved hanging out on the field in this neighborhood. Fast forward to almost 20 years later now, I just realized how much I love the atmosphere here.

This is actually a residential area that I once thought was full of wealthy families. But now, I see it differently–the atmosphere has transformed into a relaxing route, perfect for cycling. So, the other day, I went cycling around this area in the morning. This neighborhood isn’t far from my house, so it didn’t take long to get there.

Cycling in this area just feels so peaceful. Some of the houses look quite old, which adds a nostalgic atmosphere. Some houses also have front yards filled with plants or even a pretty big tree, which makes it look shady and provide a sense of serenity. Even if I compare it to my neighborhood, this one feels quieter, despite there’s an elementary school located in one of the alleys.

One of my favorite things about wandering around here is seeing the houses with so many flowers growing in their front yards. I wish I could capture it better, because it looks even prettier in real life. I’ve never dreamt of a big house; instead I really want a house with a small garden. But personally, I doubt I have the patience to take care of my own plants until they grow bigger.

A slow and calm morning like this is probably one of the things I need the most to set the mood for the rest of my day. I hope I can be consistent again with cycling every few days, because it always feels good afterward. Oh, and I always forget to take a picture of my bike every time I cycling, so next time I’ll be better at remembering it😁
